Really amazed how no-one picked them up and made them big. They deserved to be heard worldwide. Saw them play live loads in Edinburgh 80's style. Awesome!!!
Looks like the 1980s Just Threw Up on My Screen haha! But The AMAZING Shirley Manson is Awesome here, even though I would prefer Angelfish over Mr Mackenzine for my Pre-Garbage Bands!!!
saw these at the kentish town forum years ago. they were great. you can tell from this video just how good; they don't miss a note despite the fact that it's blowing a gale...
seen the Mackenzies so many times amazing band live and yeah Shirley was hot and can sing but martin gave blood sweat and tears on stage. Seen Garbage live too but their shows just didnt do it for me
Been playing my old Mackenzie tapes and glad to see so much clips on you tube.Possibly th ebest ever Scottish group and miles better than Garbage.Wish they had lasted longer and sorry I never saw them live.
Loved this band, but I think a lot of the comments are over the top. We had a lot of good bands up here around the time ..Associates/Silencers/Orange Juice/Minds/Hipsway/Blue Nile etc. We are all entitled to an opinion, but I wouldn't say GMM were the best . Maybe we are going to get a return to those kind of times with the likes of the View/Glasvegas .Bring it on..
blast from the past. Remember seeing interviewed on a channel called Music Box. Liked the song and bough the 12". Never quite made the top 40 and never heard from them again, except of course for shirley.
As an exiled English/South African/ Scottish reprobate..... Did they not rule for at least three months in those awful eighties? "I must be the last man on this planet,,......." Aah! Tomfoolery!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got two of their albums (Just ordered the album Five straight from the record company). As a journalist I really gave their self-titled album a roaring review but my fellow Swedes never really caught on I'm sorry to say...
To me they wera always the perfect Waterboys/Alarm/Furs/Eurytmics-mix that I longed for during the 80's...
One of my fave bands at one time. Saw them live at Glasgow Green on The Big Day in the Year of Culture. I believe Shirley went on to greater things? (he said knowingly). Even in bright pink lipstick she managed to look menacing.
i agree with mignonhenne, they some really catchy songs,i think it was because the were based in scotland and tbh its not the greatest place for a band to get recognition.shame though
What a booming voice Shirley has, she dosn't even need a microphone. Her Garbage band memebers use her as a PA system when they need to get someones attention, so Shirley says.
This is actually very good. Not what I expected. Still, she was way too huge of a talent to be in back up vocals (not that there is anything wrong with being a backup vocalist).
luved this band, total class.....they used to rehearse at inch house near cameron toll in edinburgh n me n a pal used to hang about outside hopin to see them n we did speak to them a few times n thot we were cool as....lol...oh the good old days....where did the years go...lol
Cool song! It's interesting watching Shirley as she evolved throughout the various stages of her stellar career. I'm so happy the boys in Wisconsin picked her up -- GARBAGE rulez!
I think what happened to them was like in the movie the Commitments, about an Irish band that just split apart. The drummer wrote the songs by the way.
Reason for not making it big , they had a reputation of burning the candle at both ends. wrecking the hotel rooms etc, wore a bit thin with the suits. A good band wasted.
They were a good band Gino. Plenty good Scottish bands on the go at that time. Associates/early Minds/Hipsway before Texas/ Silencers/Orange Juice etc. Maybe we're due another good spell with the likes of The View/Glasvegas etc.
YESSS! 'Been looking for this one! Had it recorded on a VHS tape once, impossible to find now. Can't understand why the never went really big. This is a great song, methinks.
and here I thought Shirl was new to the stage when she joined Garbage.. yes I knew she'd been in some local bands but I didn't think she had a look and style developed as much as she does here, albeit silly 80s that many of us still are guilty of. She looks and moves so good in this. I still prefer Garbage :)
This was the video that got Shirley the gig in Garbage. They were looking for a singer and one of the guys saw the video on MTV, liked her singing and phoned her up.
Big John was amazing back in them days. Seen him almost clobber a bouncer (while still playing the guitar) at Govan Town Hall gig for stopping fans enjoying themselves. Oddly enough he's now come out of the closet and is living in Amsterdam with his "hubby".
Great song, Shirley Manson has led my interests to this great band. Without You-tube this wouldn't of been possible. Scottish goth pop isn't it? Like the guitars and of course the good byes!
I have been in Edinbourgh recently and I listened this song in a bar. I's absolutely amazing but I am having a hell of trouble to find in the eMule. Could any of you tell me where I can download it? Thanks

This may be a bit of a daft question but is the band's name in tribute to Billy McKensie of the Associates?

@intentions666
Maybe a reference but not a tribute, as he was still alive when this song came out.
