Watch Dr. Caligari, Hammer's films, learn about expressionism, B movies. Learn about japanese subcultures, punk and gothic movements, victorian fiction, and then you'll see that all that already existed, that Burton simply does it his way, with his feelings (and in an AWESOME way), but at the end nobody does anythig that didn't exist before.

The only thing Burton truly did was add crooked spirals to all those styles.
