This piece in a weird way reminds me of a Granados work I used to play as a kid. I think it's called Spanish Dance - somehow the LH is very similar to that work. Anyone else hear this or am I going mad? (It's ok to say the latter :)
Van Cliburn competition. He may be even more passionate than Lugansky (who is great by any means). It is probably because Sultanov recording is live and
to PavelPlayPiano: My Russian isn't perfect but I think you said that this recording is better than Pletnev's. If so, I agree! Lugansky truly understands the essence of Rachmaninoff's passionate lyricism and long phrasing. I love 2:51!! It's like the etude's own cadenza. Lugansky brings out the melody with sensitivity to all aspects of the music: harmony, rhythm, phrasing, voicing(s), etc......A big mistake many pianists make with this piece is too much pedal. Not the case here! thanks!!

This is intense. His interpretation is the truly closest to the spirit of Rachmaninoff.

Here I would just like to remind another great
performance by the late Alexei Sultanov at the
Van Cliburn competition. He may be even more passionate than Lugansky (who is great by any means). It is probably because Sultanov recording is live and
moreover a competition performance.

No, I think Pletnev is better than Lugansky and many others pianists. Listen CD Pletnev in Carnegie hall !!!
