The technology that went into the development of the rotors and plane could have been spent elsewhere. not withstanding that, the 5 crashes that you state killed many more servicemen that other types of aircraft.. The whole thing should have been canceled in the beginning, but to many congressmen had a stake in the parts that went into the thing. The Sea Knight can carry 25 troops, the V-22 can carry 24-32, and the CH-47 can carry 33-55. Another downside to the Sea Knight is it can't carry cargo. For the V-22, they can mount either an M240 machine gun or an M2 machine gun on the rear ramp, and are developing nose-mounted and belly-mounted weapon systems. All I'm saying is that the V-22 seems like a good balance.

I'm not really sure why we reinvented the wheel with the V-22.

We had this technology completely functioning and workable in 1965 in the LTV XC-142, and also in the Canadair CL-84. Of course back then, the military didn't foresee an urgent need for a VTOL that had an extended combat radius. So here we are 40 years later reinventing the wheel at the cost of billions of taxpayer dollars.

I mean, why use something we've already developed when you could start from scratch and charge more.

No pilot on the planet wants to take a c130gunship into radar "live" hostel territory- I'd feel far more warm and fuzzy doing that mission with a "little bird" (oh58D) or ah64.
