  • The standard measure for fondant and tylose mix is 250g fondant to 1/2 teaspoon of tylose. Not all fondants will work mixed with tylose tho. Some of them will just go crumbly and fall apart...usually the softer fondants will do this. I always use Satin Ice or FondX to make my sugar figures. If you're making flowers it's best to mix your own gumpaste (I never use the tubs of gumpaste) and mix it 50/50 with fondant because the fondant/tylose mix can be brittle if it's rolled thinly.

  • hi can i ask how you store your characters once you've made them, mine seem to sweat and go soft if i leave them out in a room, even after they have previously hardened off.

    many thanks

    pearl

  • i have made my own mmf at home and it taste good but it is chewy and i don't know how to keep that from happening..do u have any ideas...

  • @plathem my does too. dats why i dnt like it. :P i guess I'll have 2 buy sum.

  • i bought tylose today what is gum tragacath??

  • thanks for your video . Love it! it help me a lot

  • Can I substitute "Gum Tragacath" for "Tylose Powder" ? Is Gum Tragacath produces same results as Tylose? Pls reply this. TQ!

  • @fadrizals they have similar components but i am not sure if it will yield exactly the same results. some have used it to substiture-- i personally have not tried it

  • @fadrizals i have used both...they have same results...but the gumpaste made by using tylose powder is white in appearance rather than one made with gum...

  • Wow - you used Satin Ice!? My family (especially Muetti) are big Wilton adherents and we usually use their fondant to make figures only. (I know, I know, it's untasty, but it's for modeling only, to clarify it for you.) If we are making a fondant cake, I'm considering your brand - ha ha!

  • i use wilton for figures too-- only bec it is super disounted at my local craft stores when i use their coupon :)

now, if i could - i make mm fondant most of the time. it really helps keep the cost down for me :)

  • can u eat both of them

  • Technically, they are edible, you 'can' . the question is IF you would want to eat it. fondant will dry just a bit but is still chewy later but gumpaste dries real hard... so i just tell people the figures are made of 'sugar' but i recommend them not to eat them bec they have dried already.

  • gumpaste seems to be like a soft eraser that can be shaped, and fondant is like plasticine

  • where do u get the tylose powder from?

  • Thank you so much. You have answered my questions, that I couldn't really find anywhere. Gum Paste is for me, since I need time working with such small detailed items and I need it to stay pliable. Great Video, keep posting.

  • Thank u so much. I have been wondering and searching for this answer for awhile. You summed it up for me. Gum Paste is easier for me to work with, since I do small detailed temsthat need more time to create without drying out quickly.

  • Hmm I always thought they were the same thing. Good to know. So for covering cakes fondant is good but for figures I should go for the gumpaste?

  • Mayen, what do you use to ice the cake before covering with fondant?

  • I use swiss meringue butetrcream

  • ok thank you so much

  • thank you now i know the difference between the 2.i have a question.what is the difference in storing the 2 and how long can you keep it?

  • if you mean storing the unused fondant and gumpaste-- it depends on the manufacturer. some have a year shelf life. if you have made figures or flowers and want to store it- as long as it is dry, you can store it in a dry place- in an airtight container- it can last years .

  • where can you buy those?

  • Thank you so much for the tutorial.. I also have a question, can I use tylose powder on homemade marshmallow fondant??

  • yes you can. the only difference i see with mm fondant when i make it into gumpaste -- is that it is not very very good with super small details... so i tend to stick with the storebought fondant and i turn it into gumpaste.

  • hi mayen were do you buy the coloring for fondant? thank you for posting such helpful videos!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  • You can usually get the gel coloring wherever you buy the ready made fondant-- from baking supplies stores or craft stores. the one most commonly available is the brand Wilton.

  • hi mayen, im hopefully going to buy fondant todayy soo..... were do you buy the coloring for the fondant? o and thanks for posting such helpful videos !!!!!!!!!!!

ps. your cakes are sooo awesome!!!!!!! :)

  • is tylose used for arts?

  • hi mayen! what would be the best way to store fondant -room temp or refrigerate and why? thanks!

  • Love your videos! Very helpful! Just wondering though...are you self taught?

  • Thank you. I am mostly youtube taught... i did not think up the process on my own. it was like having my youtube teachers with me as I replay every tutorial over and over until i got enough courgae to do it hands on-- and i practiced over and over til i was pleased with the result . :)

  • I just want to say thank you for all the videos. They are wonderful for someone that is trying to learn. I am making my 1st cake in a few days and your videos have cleared up so so many questions...:)

  • When you make your flowers do you put them in the fridge to dry or out on the counter?

  • i air dry them . and once these are dry you just store them in an airtight container.

  • does gumpaste taste sweet? like...can you eat the figures? or ....

  • gumpaste is also essentially sugar-- but once dried, it is not really something one would want to eat... it dires really hard. online stores thats ell gumpaste flowers say that it is not recommended to eat them and they are for decoration purposes only

  • Gum paste will dry hard while fondant will not dry quite so hard. Gum paste will last for ever in optimum conditions whereas fondant will not.

Mashmallow fondant is more tasty than the store bought fondant. To avoid the seeds in the mashmallow fondant, sift the sugar before adding to the fondant. I have always used mm fondant with no problems except that it will not get completely hard.

  • how come my gumpaste flower sweats after a few days

  • i think it would be because of the humidity in your area. you need to store the gumpaste in a dry airtight container after it has dried . i have to research if there are ways to make the drying process faster IF you live in a humid area... ill pass on anything i find

  • hi ate mayen.. . . im a cake enthusiast din like u. and ang gaganda ng mga videos mo dito.Ü

san po nakakabili ng cmc dito s philippines? kc fondant p din po ang gingmit ko s mga flowers ko. thnx

  • BIG help, thanks!!!!

  • are all fondant made out if marshmallow?

  • fondant can be made out of marshmallows too-- that's the homemade version..it actually tastes good too. fondant can also be made using powdered sugar, corn syrup, shortening, gelatin etc... and come up with something close to the store bought version

  • What about taste? Which one taste better in general?

  • fondant and gumpaste are practically made from the same material --w hich is sugar, but fondant will be more palatable in a sense because it is supposed to be softer. when gumpaste dries, it's really dry. besides, taste is always a matter or personal preference-- so it may taste the same to me but different for eveyone else. i encourage you to give it a shot :)

  • Thank you sooo much for clarifying. I always thought that fondant would hold it's shape more because that's what they use in cake decorating books. No wonder I had difficulty. I've heard that gumpaste doesn't taste as good though - but I guess no one's really going to eat a cake topper! By the way, you're really fortunate in N. America to have so many choices of cake decorating brands and stores.

  • Your cakes are beautiful that you've been doing. I am inspired and tried my first MM fondant cake and it turned out great, it only made me want to make more. I wanted to do a loopy bow for the top but ended up making a regular bow because the fondant was too soft. I guess I needed to use the gumpaste. Is gumpaste edible? I also thought gumpaste was something you added to the fondant and not something you used on it's own. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

  • thank you so much for making this video!!

  • OOO....dear , I wish they sell readymade fondant and gumpaste like that here in my country.....I am still using my own homemade fondant and gumpaste...;(

  • Hi..I had the same problem... i didnt know exactly what went wrong, it's like I needed more shortening... then it turned into this wierd lump of something else...haha... then i tried again and this time i used the stand mixer...it was a lot like store bought fondant BUT it still had the hard lumps of powdered sugar when I was rolling the fondant . Thanks again :)

  • hi! i've been watching your wonderful videos for a while now and I'm so happy you shared this fondant vs gumpaste vid! it's helping me sooooooooooooo much! i tried marshmallow fondant for the first time a while ago and I agree with you about how unpredictable it is. I followed the recipe exactly but found myself adding more pow. sugar and it still wasn't stable. but anyways, i'm heading out to michaels right now! thanks again for the vids! i enjoy them very much and look forward to seeing more:)
