Hello i was recently given a Venezuelan Model 24/30 Short Rifle 7mm. I had some question on vaule and the rareness of it. Any thing would help! Thanks D.
on the note with the 1903 Springfield. the US government got sued by mauser and had to pay royalties to the companie right up until the m1903 was no longer produced
Hello. Great videos. I have to however point out that I didn't hear you mention anything about the most important difference in the rifles used during the Spanish American War. I remember reading somewhere that the most important advantage was of the smokeless powder. Just my 2 cents worth.
@smokybob63 what do you mean? you took the bolt out with the safety on fire mode?!!! good luck putting that together again. it needs to be in the upright position while dismateling. ALWAYS!!!!
@nick21sammy no i took the bolt out and then like an idiot started playing with and twisted the bolt so it was in the fired position. But i got it fixed pretty quickly.
I finally got some ammo for my vz 24- I went to one of the local shops and he had 3 boxes on the shelf--the original boxes from 1938 with 2 stripper clips with 10 rounds--I thought cheap at $5 a box. what do you think cheap or not?
great vid.i have a '91 argentine and its a awesome rifle and has a sweet bolt.very smooth.7.65 is a hard hitting round too.hopefully i can get a k98 at some point.anyways great vid:)
I have what looks like a Kar98k.....but it has a straight bolt....its a 1937, and the crest is too worn to make out so I dont know the make. It has a very dark stock and the front barrel sleeve has a pin that pushes all the way through the stock to keep it in place instead of the spring clip that typically keeps the metal collars in place. Anyone have any Info on this for me?
@TheBobafett13 Well I recently discovered two swatstikas engraved on it, one hidden underneath the rear sight, and one hidden on the inside of the magazine floor plate. That change your opinion?
@FrankieJames7 That is a pretty close argument, personally I would have to go with the Kar98 on personal preference :). But I have shot a Mosin and I enjoyed it, very reliable sturdy rifle, accurate too suprisingly for a Russian made weapon.
@71SuperSportChevelle yeah thank you for not being a dick like i am. i just went shooting to. i like the mosin nagant because i live in alaska and almost the same temps as russia
@FrankieJames7 I wasn't only speaking about pre 1950's guns, and I would say all guns have "quality" lol everything has quality... Some good, some bad.
@71SuperSportChevelle mosin nagant has the better reputation unless your a german or a nazi. and the mosin nagant is more sucsessful because it won the war
@FrankieJames7 I don't think it has a better reputation I think that is just your opinion, and stop calling people nazis when I am not as I have repeated, that would be like me just saying your a communist pussy over and over again now wouldn't it?
@71SuperSportChevelle And why do you think Nazi Germany is so evil for killing Russians, if you hated anyone for killing Russians it should be the Russians themselves, they are pretty good at slaughtering their own people, I would take Hitler over Stalin anyday.
As I am Argentinian, in the shootin' ranges, before u can shoot, you must show your skills in a test with mousers (obviously, argentinians ones). There are LOTS AND LOTS of them. The bad thing is that they are in a really poor condition...
@PsychopathicLlama Karabiner, from a linguistic point of view, has the same stem of carbine. However, in the German usage of the word, Karabiner means that it has a side mounted sling. Look up the Kar98b, it's a modified Gewehr 98, turned down bolt, side mounted slings, but same length as a gewehr.
@PsychopathicLlama Karabiner from a linguistic point of view, has the same stem as carbine. However, in the German usage of the word, Karabiner means that it has a side mounted sling. It does not neccessarily mean that it has a shorter barrel or shorter length.
@LastRussianEmporer Not quite. Don't know why people always think it's "Kar 98 k". It's definitely "K 98k". "k" is just pronounced like "kar" in German, not like "kay" as in English. But the explanation is of course correct.
@gizehfilter No dude, he's right, the Kar indicates it's a Carbine, although Kar was interchangeable for just K at the front, but in the military it was known as the Kar 98 K.
@pritzi101 Well, how do you know? I never found "Kar 98k" in any German document or on any German website including Wehrmacht manuals and my grandpa's pay book ("Soldbuch"). Only on sites in English. "K 98k" is short for "Karabiner 98 kurz", that's true. Maybe the Allies used the abbreviation "kar"...?
@gizehfilter Its official name was the Mehrladekarabiner Modell Mauser K98k, because during the WWI the rifle was longer but already a carbine, so the new rifle was given the designation K for a shorter rifle. Whilst the name might not have been Kar in the paper work, it was almost definitely used on the ground and I assure there is a distinct difference been Kar and the pronunciation of K.
I just bought a 1923 Czech BRNO, looked into the history of all my marks, was made and used by Czechoslavakia, then sold in the late 30s to turkey, hence my sight being in weird numerals, I replaced it with an original czech.
mine has no bluing left, but is all matching, minus the sight slide. Very nice overall but I think I overpaid being it cost $159 :{
It has excellent rifling though. Ejector has a problem though??? Feeds great but won't throw the spent round out. Any tips for this?
@1983BOWTIEBEATER Same issue as you are. the ejector is supposed to be a leaf spring, but mine just floats freely. Extracts fine, couldn't eject even if I pried at it. Had to take the bolt out and wiggle it off
I have a dou 44 k98. Is the metal properly heat treated in this rifle? I had a gunsmith look at it and he thought it was ok to shoot, went out and shot it and it was fine. Any opinions?
243 1940 I have the same one Its a vet bringback with matching numbers a good rifle made when the steel was still good. You have to look for early ones.
i am looking for a mauser to buy. whic one will be best. i live in CA by the way. the only avalible ones i found are turkish mausers and yugos and sweds. looking for an 8MM though. thanks
Hey IV8888 Been watching your vids for about a year now and see you have a lot of smarts when it comes down to rifles.. i am in need of help my K98 & 91/30 both have a tiny bit of rust in the rifeling i got most of it out with solvents, windex, copper wool and boiling water but none of this is helping for the last bit now.. and i just dont know what else to use.. i keep doing all the steps i told u i have done but they arent working now any ideas man?
Thanks for the pricing advice. I realize now I poorly asked that last question. What I meant to say is that the magazine spring does not prevent the bolt from being closed as it should when the rifle is empty. It could be it is just caked with cosmoline, or maybe the m48 differs from the K98 in that regard? You describe in your video that you have to push the spring down to close the bolt on your 98k when empty, is that also true for a properly functioning m48? Thanks Again
@webst150 The bolt on the M48 will likely not lock back. It isn't the floor plate...if you look at the follower, you should notice that is has a small notch cut out of the corner to allow the bolt to slide over it. If the magazine itself did not lock up, it would fall out of the rifle completely. $350 is a little high unless it is in mint condition. If the bore isn't pristine and the crown isn't extremely sharp, I would offer about $250
Well in the US you can own one if its given to you as a gift if you are under 18, but for anyone to buy a firearm like a rifle or shotgun the age is 18 no matter how old the arm is, and its 21 in most areas for handgun sales if not nationwide.
Great work I like your idea of the draws thats cool but I would like if you get the time to do some more .22 videos on what is the best store ammo for like range, hunting .ETC bullets you can get in .22 shorts and long rifle. I know your busy but I thought I would just put the idea in your head.
Should be a good shooter. Bore should slug at .323 or so. The rifle you have was likely brought in and converted from old supplies of Model 98s if my memory serves. It is a long gun with a straight bolt, correct?
i have a, 8mm that says fabrica de armas 1942, on the reciever and im not sure what country it is from. I have not seen one that looks like it yet, any ideas to what country it might be from?
i need a mauser, a local shop has a Gewehr 98 that was made into a k98 with a cut barrel from germany and also has those Lange Visier sights left on it. you think its a good buy? i thought the gun shop guy was b.sing by telling this was done by the germans and was giving to SS troops and the Police. But i got home and looked it up and its true lol
I believe it was 299.00 i would say it was in good condition. the bore was a little dark but he said that common with these 8mm rifles. im still new to the surplus rifles but plan on getting a bunch.
I found a K98 in a shop today for $300 dated 1939. I would have LOVED to get the weapon, but I don't know about ammo prices. Anyone care to help me out? I can't afford reloading supplies...
8mm Mauser ammo is still fairly reasonable in terms of pricing. Try calling Century, AIM Surplus, J&G Sales, Military Gun Supply, Dans Ammo, Sportsman's Guide, Midway USA, etc.
Beautiful rifle! I'm very happy that you keep them in such a great shape! I really love the WW1/2 bolt rifles. We can't buy them in Holland (we can't even buy a plastic ball shooting gun since they look like 'real' guns LOL! or not!!) but you can buy them in Belgium the country under mine for 800! euro's or more! Very expensive, the German ones then. You also pay 250-300 Euro for a 1895 Nagant revolver there.
Any rifle of the era is going to need maintainence. The ammo they used was very corrosive, and many times soldier would go for long periods of time without cleaning their rifles. Look at a K31 Swiss bore and you'll see what I mean. The ammo they used was not corrosive, and granted they didn't have to fight.
Scoping these rifles is no more difficult than other milsurps although, generally, the Mauser requires very precise drilling and tapping to mount a scope base properly. They make LER scope mounts that replace the rear sight base that are an attractive option for those not wanting to make alterations to the rifle. IMO, the best way to scope any rifle is to drill and tap is necessary.
okay......i respect all firearms, in my opinion this is rifle manufacturing at its best. Even thought these are 60+ years old they still shoot like they were just made at an armory. I have got a 1934 German K98 that gives great groups at 100yds on surplus ammo. This rifles were designed by great craftsman. Thats why they are still around and able to perform.
Mauser rifles were also produced in Herstal by the Fabrique National de Guerre (FN) in Belgium. I do believe the Belgain Mausers were in 7,65x53 Belgian (also called Argentine) but the same basic Model 98 design.
Glad you brought that up. It is important to note that the facilities were taken over during the war and the factory/workers/materials used to fuel the Nazi war machine, respectively.
About 8 years ago my dad brother and I ordered 3 handpicked Turkish 1903 Mausers for $50.00 a piece and free shipping. Some people will say the turks are the low end of the Mausers but that's not my experience they are great rifles.
its really amazing to watch the Gew 71infantry rifle be refined and refined until it became the mauser 98. I think they added the bolt guide to the bolt in 1898. Great vid 5*****
uh actually when you mean the difference between k98 and k98k. it was actually the gewehr 98 that the k98k was based off from. basically what im saying it that there i no just k98, it the k98k the predicessor gew 98. side note: i dont quite understand why they had to put that "K" at the end cuz k98k stands for karabine 98 kurtz or carbine 98 short, they're kinda doing a double negative.
I'm thinking of buying either a Mosin Nagant M91/30 or a Lee Enfield no 5 mk 1. Seeing as you seem to be the expert, which one do you think would be the better choice and why?
It mostly depends on what you prefer and whether or not you intend on shooting it.
If you want to shoot...The M91/30 is going to be easier to find cheap ammo for, and the initial investment in the rifle itself will be cheaper. Good all around choice for plinking, and some hunting applications (use a good SP round...not military ammo)
The Enfield is more of a handloader's rifle if you are intending on shooting it a lot.
Both designs are soldiers and will be wonderful additions.
Lee Enfield No 5 is a carbine, while the M91/30 is a "long rifle", both have very different characteristics .....the Mosin will be accurate out to a longer distance for example, where the carbine would be better suited to say, hunting in a heavily forested area where you would shoot at closer ranges.
Ditto on what iraqvet said. I have an enfield No.4 mk1 and two mosins, a 44 izzy 91/30 ex-sniper, and a 44 izzy m44. Out of the two both will get the job done. The enfield is probably made just slightly better but the mosins are crudely simple, accurate, and get the job done and are probably better rifles to buy for the newer people getting into surplus rifles. Easy to take apart, accurate, and ammo is cheaper and easier to find.
I agree. I kinda have a thing for small ring mausers. Specifically the 96. I am practically obsessed with the 6.5x55 Swede. I have no I idea why. It's such a "cool" cartridge

Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
lol just message me the address and ill send it :) i have 55, i would have more but man my shoulder started hurting lol.
slyde77 2 years ago
Great work I like your idea of the draws thats cool but I would like if you get the time to do some more .22 videos on what is the best store ammo for like range, hunting .ETC bullets you can get in .22 shorts and long rifle. I know your busy but I thought I would just put the idea in your head.
skippers96 2 years ago
@skippers96
Yeah I'll do that eventually.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
I own a G98 1916 Dänzig with all numbers matching. Is there anything special about this rifle you know of? :)
All i know is that it was used by the German wehrmacht in Norway during ww2.
Ialocin85 1 year ago
Should be a good shooter. Bore should slug at .323 or so. The rifle you have was likely brought in and converted from old supplies of Model 98s if my memory serves. It is a long gun with a straight bolt, correct?
Iraqveteran8888 1 year ago
im having trouble with my Safety. It's hard to engage to safe mod and so on, any tips? its very very stiff and sometimes i cant get it in safe mode.
slyde77 2 years ago
Hard to say without looking at it personally. Mauser safeties usually never have problems, so I would take it to a gunsmith.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
Yeah ill prob do that cause it just sticks really bad sometimes. Anyway wuld you like that 8mm brass? Its Prvi Partizan brass, it was sp 196gr
slyde77 2 years ago
If you don't want it, I'll dang sure give it a home. Only if it is no problem to send it.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
i have a, 8mm that says fabrica de armas 1942, on the reciever and im not sure what country it is from. I have not seen one that looks like it yet, any ideas to what country it might be from?
lew935 2 years ago
Sounds like you have a La Caruna Spanish Airforce Mauser. Does it have the double bayonet lug?
Those Mausers are nice...I used to have one. Mine was a 42' also...good rifle, and should be a decent shooter.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
Just got a k98 today sportserized but all #s match with a 60's weaver k2.5 and all waffen marks intact. cant wait to shoot this one.

my favorite is the Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55
VIKINGWARLOCK 2 years ago
i need a mauser, a local shop has a Gewehr 98 that was made into a k98 with a cut barrel from germany and also has those Lange Visier sights left on it. you think its a good buy? i thought the gun shop guy was b.sing by telling this was done by the germans and was giving to SS troops and the Police. But i got home and looked it up and its true lol
slyde77 2 years ago
How much are they asking?
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
I believe it was 299.00 i would say it was in good condition. the bore was a little dark but he said that common with these 8mm rifles. im still new to the surplus rifles but plan on getting a bunch.
slyde77 2 years ago
Thats about average. Hard to tell without looking at it.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
i love both of them hard comparison

Atugaz 2 years ago
I found a K98 in a shop today for $300 dated 1939. I would have LOVED to get the weapon, but I don't know about ammo prices. Anyone care to help me out? I can't afford reloading supplies...
CrystalHunter1989 2 years ago
8mm Mauser ammo is still fairly reasonable in terms of pricing. Try calling Century, AIM Surplus, J&G Sales, Military Gun Supply, Dans Ammo, Sportsman's Guide, Midway USA, etc.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
nice vid as always. dude, do u do anything else except playing with guns???? lol
bobtaylor1979 2 years ago
@bobtaylor1979
Not really. I play guitar, burn up the woods, and play with guns.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
dude, 8mm is nice and cheap compared to other calibers. Only like nagant ammo is cheaper.
67mustangreg 2 years ago
A handloader can shoot any .30 caliber for about the same price.
I suppose the 7.62x54r and 8mm Mauser are about neck and neck in terms of price and availability.
It wont last forever though!
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
just got home from a gun show, and dissapointed that I couldn't find very much 30-06 let alone at a good price. about $.75 a round.
67mustangreg 2 years ago
Try the CMP but good luck even with them. And they are Government backed and funded!
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
is there a good place to get a mauser accesorie pack?
im mainly looking for a bayonets/cabbard/ sling/ ammo pouch. i was gonna get the one on colorado gun sales but its sold out
assaultrecon28 2 years ago
Try gunbroker, numrich gun parts, and military gun supply. You may also call Samco Global Arms as well.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
Beautiful rifle! I'm very happy that you keep them in such a great shape! I really love the WW1/2 bolt rifles. We can't buy them in Holland (we can't even buy a plastic ball shooting gun since they look like 'real' guns LOL! or not!!) but you can buy them in Belgium the country under mine for 800! euro's or more! Very expensive, the German ones then. You also pay 250-300 Euro for a 1895 Nagant revolver there.
itseasyforyou 2 years ago
Thanks for sharing your experience. You are welcome to come shoot my rifles whenever you want...All you have to do is come to the U.S...LOL
250 EURO for a Nagant Revolver...OUCH.
They are about 89 bucks here.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
the mauzer is a great riftle but it has some flaws it had to be cleaned regulary and there was not a standard isued scope
but some german world war 2 soldiers stole the soviet scopes and modified them onto the mauzer
clonearmymovies 2 years ago
Any rifle of the era is going to need maintainence. The ammo they used was very corrosive, and many times soldier would go for long periods of time without cleaning their rifles. Look at a K31 Swiss bore and you'll see what I mean. The ammo they used was not corrosive, and granted they didn't have to fight.

Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
Great video. Is it difficult to scope one of these rifles? My eyes are getting pretty old for the open sights. Keep up the great work.
prairietiercel 2 years ago
Scoping these rifles is no more difficult than other milsurps although, generally, the Mauser requires very precise drilling and tapping to mount a scope base properly. They make LER scope mounts that replace the rear sight base that are an attractive option for those not wanting to make alterations to the rifle. IMO, the best way to scope any rifle is to drill and tap is necessary.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
with the wood version do you have to sand the wood
ubername9999 2 years ago
Are you referring to refinishing the stock?
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
the krag really wasn`t so bad.......
JNT20 2 years ago
If I sounded like I was talking shit about Krag, im Sorry!
I love the Krag!!!!! It's a wonderful rifle in it's own respect.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
okay......i respect all firearms, in my opinion this is rifle manufacturing at its best. Even thought these are 60+ years old they still shoot like they were just made at an armory. I have got a 1934 German K98 that gives great groups at 100yds on surplus ammo. This rifles were designed by great craftsman. Thats why they are still around and able to perform.
thewatchdawg229 2 years ago
I agree...The Mauser pattern of rifles is one hell of a design and engineering feat!

Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
is the stock for a mauser m48 compatible with a mauser m24?
assaultrecon28 2 years ago
The stocks are almost identical but the metal parts have a few differences. I would read up on it. You might be able to get away with it.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
I was thinking about getting a yugo m24 from jgsales
assaultrecon28 2 years ago
Those are awesome rifles and very accurate.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
nice video man, i'm a US wwii rifleman myself, but i also cannot go past a nice mauser. Just great firearms, very well made
falloutdude222 2 years ago
I agree...I love U.S. weapons, but there is something about the old faithful Masuer rifle....
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
Mauser rifles were also produced in Herstal by the Fabrique National de Guerre (FN) in Belgium. I do believe the Belgain Mausers were in 7,65x53 Belgian (also called Argentine) but the same basic Model 98 design.
pukkepop 2 years ago
Glad you brought that up. It is important to note that the facilities were taken over during the war and the factory/workers/materials used to fuel the Nazi war machine, respectively.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
About 8 years ago my dad brother and I ordered 3 handpicked Turkish 1903 Mausers for $50.00 a piece and free shipping. Some people will say the turks are the low end of the Mausers but that's not my experience they are great rifles.
Ocyris4 2 years ago 3
LUCKY...Whoever says a Turkish Mauser is junk obviously doesn't know jack about what they are talking about. They are classic examples!
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
its really amazing to watch the Gew 71infantry rifle be refined and refined until it became the mauser 98. I think they added the bolt guide to the bolt in 1898. Great vid 5*****
mauser3846 2 years ago
+1 I agree...
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
I think control feed first came out with the 1892-3 Mauser.
Gungeek 2 years ago
Yeah me too...That was a slip of the brain.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
uh actually when you mean the difference between k98 and k98k. it was actually the gewehr 98 that the k98k was based off from. basically what im saying it that there i no just k98, it the k98k the predicessor gew 98. side note: i dont quite understand why they had to put that "K" at the end cuz k98k stands for karabine 98 kurtz or carbine 98 short, they're kinda doing a double negative.
oktoberfest124 2 years ago
We are talking about the same rifle I just mistakenly called it a K98 instead of a Gew98. Either way, the point is made...LOL
And yes, the fact that another "k" is at the end of the model is kind of silly, but hey.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
I'm thinking of buying either a Mosin Nagant M91/30 or a Lee Enfield no 5 mk 1. Seeing as you seem to be the expert, which one do you think would be the better choice and why?
swords13639 2 years ago
It mostly depends on what you prefer and whether or not you intend on shooting it.
If you want to shoot...The M91/30 is going to be easier to find cheap ammo for, and the initial investment in the rifle itself will be cheaper. Good all around choice for plinking, and some hunting applications (use a good SP round...not military ammo)
The Enfield is more of a handloader's rifle if you are intending on shooting it a lot.
Both designs are soldiers and will be wonderful additions.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
Like Iraqveteran said but the action on the enfield is a lot nicer. Mosin nagant is a lot cheaper in ammo and the gun itself though lol
niko911 2 years ago
Bear in mind also that the Enfield is a cock on closing design. Some swear by it, while some loathe it...
I prefer a cock on opening design, but I like the Enfield too.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
Lee Enfield No 5 is a carbine, while the M91/30 is a "long rifle", both have very different characteristics .....the Mosin will be accurate out to a longer distance for example, where the carbine would be better suited to say, hunting in a heavily forested area where you would shoot at closer ranges.
Cruisey1962 2 years ago
Very true...They are both nice rifles. Shit I plan on carrying my Martini Henry for primative weapons hunting this year....
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
Ditto on what iraqvet said. I have an enfield No.4 mk1 and two mosins, a 44 izzy 91/30 ex-sniper, and a 44 izzy m44. Out of the two both will get the job done. The enfield is probably made just slightly better but the mosins are crudely simple, accurate, and get the job done and are probably better rifles to buy for the newer people getting into surplus rifles. Easy to take apart, accurate, and ammo is cheaper and easier to find.
Dp908 2 years ago
Regards to the controlled round feed. I think that goes back to the Spanish 1893 Mauser if not before that.
jasonhenson1991 2 years ago
Yeah I meant to mention that actually...I just had a brain fart on that. The 1893 is a very nice revision of the Mauser IMO.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
I agree. I kinda have a thing for small ring mausers. Specifically the 96. I am practically obsessed with the 6.5x55 Swede. I have no I idea why. It's such a "cool" cartridge
jasonhenson1991 2 years ago
Yeah I know right? SHAME on me for not bringing up the Swedish Mauser!
That will have to be a video of it's own when I get one finally... ;)
