well u get a fast takeoff, "desireable" food (they love adding stews and curries to the menu) and the entertainment is all mainscreen... unless u can afford to fly biz!! seats are alright, but not the best and the interiors are in need of replacement...

We flew to Sydney from Melb last November... we got a Muffin in a box and the return flight one prepacked Sandwidge in a box! QANTAS foods standars have certainly dropped dropped in recnet years! (usually fly Jet Star or Virgin, but the QANTAS flight was booked thru P&O Cruises)

Yeah nice place in Cairns pity I was only there for 30mins to change for a bigger plane for Brisbane after a trip from Darwin in a fokker plane.

the reason they bank left is bec the way the traffic pattern goes because that rwy they just took off from is mainly the one that is always active and in use so air traffic controllers tell any air craft to turne left when using that rwy i was on a 767 from cairns to sydney in july Qf 1205 and we went left as well so it allso has to do with were ur next vor or nab is located

i landed in cairns in a Qantas 767 but left in a Jetstar A320. The 767 doesn't take long to leave the ground.

Notice they do that sharp left-hand turn immediately after lift-off when they take off on Runway 15, WELL short of the mountains!

The reason for the bank to the left is to avoid Mt. Bartle Frere near Innisfail. Due to the size of the aircraft they can't climb to a safe enough altitute to clear it in time, so they head out over the ocean and then duck back inland near Townsville.

Anyone living in Cairns might remember the Qantas 737 trials where they took off down the inlet and valley. They were specially equiped with GPS tracking to fly past the mountains.
