Many improvvisators know what they have just played. Several improvvisators know what they are now playing. A very very few improvisators know what they are going to play. Chapuis is one of the last group!
Beethoven stated that in his opinion, the organist who is master of his instrument is the chiefest of musicians. Michel Chapuis is one of those Chiefs! Interesting to note, that these days, only organists and jazz musicians improvise on a regular basis, as part of their job description, as it were.
@Ntalikeris666 The very very beginning I hear that yeah. Obviously you would have to be a god for an improvised fugue to be as good as g minor the great though. At like 2:12 when he takes down the volume a lot that reminds me some of the fantasy but he did that chromatic rising sequence then which is totally Bach but not in BWV 542. I assume you just leave it unstated that he is very influenced by Bach all throughout.
@parquar Indeed I was refering to the beggining (not the whole piece) and some other bits and pieces here and there. Some other parts remind me of several other works, not only by bach but also other composers.
@Ntalikeris666 I can see how he was piecing together bits of learned theory and ideas but it's still remarkable. I can only wonder what Bach must have been like improvising... If the ricercar a 3 is nearly the same as what he improvised, and I wouldn't doubt it, there was some scary talent going on
Well, i did not by any means, mean to underestimate the improvisation by Chapuis, so of course it is highly remarkable. As for how exactly bach improvised, there is not much clues on that, but thinking that many of his pieces, had started as simple improvisations, i would not be surprised if Bach played improvisations that are almost the same as his actual works.
@parquar I heard from a reliable source, that Marcel Dupré once improvised a Trio Sonata, a Ricercare a 6 voci, and a 5 voice triple fugue, all on the same theme, which had been submitted to him just minutes prior to improvising. The theme had a rest in the middle of it, like the theme of the Musical Offering.
@jockboy69 gosh lol, having connections to Vierne and Widor probably helped a bit. So much awesomeness concentrated there. I wonder how good WF Bach was at improvising, because I read that he focused more on it than composing because of his father being like the best ever lol. I find him the best of Bach's sons at composing though anyway because he didn't resort to trivial rococo/classical trends
Grand improvisation! clear, bell-like tones from this instrument good audio recording very fine camera work in closeups a nice intimate portrait of the artist at work a fine capture of the interior acoustics altogether an impressive piece thrillingly played with consummate artistry highest honors! ********** Glenn
i went in this church last august. the organ is one of the best beautiful modern instrument i ever seen. unfortunately i haven't heard. thank you for this wonderful improvisation.
i also ask you if you own the dvd where marie-claire alain plays the mueller organ in st. bavokerk in haarlem: i'm searching it from a lot of time, but i don't know nobody that has it.
Grande très grande improvisation ...

...this instrument is incredible. It has the tonal character of a North German or Holland Schnitger organ.

Wait.... I feel I have misread this. Is this his improvisation or is it an improvised piece by someone else?

Thanks for your kind comment. Yes, this is one of Michel Chapuis' own great improvisations.
