  • I believe this fight was in Ogden, Utah.

  • Ron Lipton again.

Your father would be a champion today.

Anyone that knows boxing remembers him with total respect.

    blessings to your Father,

    Ron

  • My name is Ron Lipton, a dear friend of Ali and Angelo Dundee,

I am one of the Senior boxing writers for the cyberboxingzone and a former fighter and referee. Your Father was a tremendous athlete and one of the hardest punching middleweight ever with the left hook. I was Dick Tiger, Rubin Carter and Jose Monon Gonzalez's sparring partners.

I would love to do a great boxing article on your Father, I sent you an E-mail.

Your Father was strong, honest and brave.

  • @ronlipton1

Did you fight pro under the name of "Ron Lipton"?

  • box sucio

  • the Fullmer bros. were impossible to beat by decision, in Utah!!

  • Do you have Fullmer's 1959 title defense against Ellsworth "Spider" Webb?

  • I saw this fight when I was a kid and I totally agree with Florentino's daughter. Fullmer who was the dirtiest fighter I ever saw and why the boxing commissions loved him I will never know. His best punch was a rabbit punch behind the head. In his first title "winning" effort over Robinson that was the only punch he landed. Florentino Fernandez could really hit. He would have been dangerous in any era. Unfortunately, he was fighting Fullmer in his backyard and had no chance.

  • @celticbanner18 is blind to body punches. His body punches won Fullmer the title against Roninson.

  • Fullmer is a trainer today in his native Utah.

  • Does anyone know where this fight took place?

  • Ogden Stadium, Ogden, Utah, United States

  • Haha Fullmer is totally like my great uncle! beat that suckers!!

  • Fullmer and Fernandez were both great brawlers. They came to fight - not box. Carmen Basilio was another great brawler, but he wasn't big or strong enough to beat Fullmer. Ricky Hatton is a modern day brawler. I like Hatton a lot, but he clinches and holds too much.

  • I am Florentino's daughter, to address the comment that my dad was a"mob favorite" & a dirty fighter,if he was a favorite its because he was GREAT.if he would have been dirty, this fight would not have been taken from him. In those days the Champ had to be knocked down to loose his title and although my dad has a fierce left hook it was not enough to keep him down. In todays world he would have won that decision!

  • One of the best punches I ever saw was Floro` knocking out Joe DiNucci, I think that was the first time DiNucci had been on the floor.

  • @champsdaughter Florentino got robbed. Fullmer was tough dude but he was the dirtiest boxer in the history of boxing with Fritzie Zivic the former welterweight champ maybe only exceeding him. This fight showed how hometown is definitely an adavantage.

  • @champsdaughter But back in the day a lot of fighter had dealings with the Mafia. Mob figures had a lot of control in boxing then and if you didn't "Play Ball"(Fixing fights or giving part of the purses of the fights to Mob figures)you could win 50-100 fights and still not get a shot at a title

  • @champsdaughter:

    And a millionaire too.

  • gene fullmer is my third cousin and i found that out from my dad which i think is really really cool

  • George is old enough to be your great, great-grandfather.

  • It was fortunate for Fullmer that the bout was fought in his hometown.

The local boy was given a gift with the bout scored as a draw.

  • baba:

For the record, Fullmer was given the decision vs Floro.

My dum-dum re. Giardello. In that one Fullmer got a gift draw which is just as good an outcome as a win for a champion.

The champion always retains the title in a draw.

  • For the record, Fullmer was given the decision vs Floro.--boo boo

With my faulty memory, you might be correct.

But, I recall the bout being called a draw with the champ retaining the crown.

It wasn't the first or last erroneous decision ever made. But, I was a huge Florentino fan at the time and I was shocked that 2 of the scoring judges would so blatantly ignore the action in the ring in order to placate the home crowd.

  • Agree with you booboo. Fullmer was an extremely dirty fighter. When asked about his tactics during his career Fullmer's reply was he was never dq'd. Translation: he was a dirty fighter.

    I hate Gene Fullmer.

  • i agree. dirty fighter..

  • nice to have the support of mat.

  • h-505 and bab-d:

The terrible decision in Fullmer's win over Joey Giardello was even worse.

  • Most hateable fighter in hx per h-5.

  • "I hate Gene Gullmer."

    Forgot to roger that!

  • @hdog505

In any Fullmer video (*and thanxx so much to all boxing uploaders) we can count the attempts to head-butt and the elbows thrown; it's not a matter of opinion; it's verifiable evidence.

  • You must speak from great experience, Mr. dud.

  • And Fullmer's not even bleeding, anywhere, so we can see gun-sissy is lying.

  • Look at the middle of his forehead dumb ass! He's split down the middle. I have the entire fight ya butt puppet.

  • Post it, then.

Even in this clip we see Gene leading with his head. He was one of the dirtiest fighters of all-time in any division.

  • hey BooBooBitch, why do you talk so much shit about Fullmer? seriously, your not gonna make us hate him so just stick shove that cock back down your throat and shut your bitch ass up. quit insulting fighters

  • Merry X-mouse to you, too, goody-good.

  • WUEEEEEEEEEEEEBONNN

  • Floro did enough to win; landed more shots and did less grabbing although he did his share.

Great post of the forgotten days.

  • Did enough to win and landed more shots? Does that include the blatent head butt that split Fullmers forehead wide open? Fullmers defense with his arms up in that guard prevented any clean shots from really landing.

  • Revisionist hx. Fullmer was not only a dirty fighter but remains a low-class, dirty mink-farmer.

Floro later knocked Jose Torres flat and at his best could compete with the acknowledged best of any era.

  • Watch the whole fight not just what gets posted on Youtube. Fernandez flat out head butted him splitting his forehead wide open. In today's boxing he would have been DQ'd. Your mink farmer comments are so stupid they aren't worth a response. "Floro" was a mob favorite btw! Talk about a dirty fighter.

  • Why don't you post the entire fight, gun-foo-foo?

  • BooBooLane you should check the facts. Fulmer never was a mink farmer. His trainer Marv Jenson was a mink farmer. Pull your head out.

  • @runrbaxter

    Gene is still mink-farming, r/b.

  • ese no es flo :S

  • cud use more action and less grapplin imo

  • Both of these men are solid fighters. Both look very strong.

  • thanks
