No, it's the old velocity squared problem. The real impact from an asteroid comes because of how fast it's moving. 3 small asteroids could do more damage than 1 big one, even though the mass is smaller, because the effects would be less localized. A 50ft tidal wave hitting every coastal area on the atlantic would do less damage than 3 25 ft tidal waves hitting every coastal area on the globe, for instance.
@skoz14 That's a hell of long time before this one hit us about 700 years. What about Aphous an asteriod that will come extremely close too us in April 2028 and then may hit us in 2036, when it makes another pass at us? This one might not wipe us out but what it would do is cause lot of damage where ever it might hit, and its in most of our life times that this might happened too us.
If life on earth still exists in 2880 then shame on us for not being smart enough to intergalactially relocate,to be honest im more worried about the sun destroying us with a massive solar flare =]

excellent video.. we should be prepared now, but unfortunately we spend to much on nukes and space exploration.... we have the technology but lack the will..
All you would need to do is blow up a 100 hydrogen bombs from a little distance. That should push most huge asteroids out of their trajectory enough to not hit earth if it was done in time.
the power of all the hydrogen bombs in the world couldnt compare to the force of an extinction size asteroid hurtling trough space. it will just keep smiling and coming for earth probably. mayb it breaks off a few chunks, but they will still reach earth and are now extremely radio active. best change i think is finding such an asteroide early and build an inmense stellular body and send in to the comet. this man made 'comet' has his own gravitational pull and could mayb change the trajectory
800 years from now we'll be an interstellar species, and we will have the technology to take care of these things without any risk at all. No worries.
@0umbrellacorp did they seriously say that the asterid is 7 million miles away, and that it will take it about 870 years for it to get here, and that it is close enough for us to "check out" on a radar? Ummm... Dude... Aphopis hits us and I will give you Antarctica... There are many other asteroids then Aphopis that are higher on the Torino scale and I think from memory that Aphopis has even been relegated to a 0 on the scale as of 2005 or 2006.

It has a 1 in 45,000 chances to hit earth, 300 meters in diameter. it could wipe-out an entire continent. They don't even where it will hit, maybe in your backyard(not that want it). 1 in 45,000 chances isn't good news. and it's sooner than you expected...
@ObliviuxProductions to answer your question, the reason it doesn't work 50/50 is because hundreds of variables have to be accounted for the trajectory of the asteroid, for starters, the gravity of every planet and the sun, their orbits, their effects on each other, any other extraplanetary objects and their trajectories (other asteroids perhaps), that's all i can think of right now, but i'm sure i'm missing something, that's already probably around a couple hundred variables there. Ignoramus :)
@ObliviuxProductions If you believe that, then I'll roll a die 1000 times and bet you $100 that each time it's rolled it will not be a six. This means that every time 6 pops up, I give you $100 and every time not 6 comes up, you give me $100. At the end of this, we should come very close to breaking even, because by your logic, it's a 50/50 bet.
Your argument deals with 6 possible outcomes. Which is 1, 2, 3 ,4 ,5 and finally 6. So it's irrelevant to what I was trying to say, since it only deals with 2 outcomes : the asteroid hits the earth or it doesn't. But then again I could be looking at this the wrong way, so if you want to explain don't use examples that are irrevelant, use the asteroid and the earth like it said in the video.
@ObliviuxProductions I thought the statistics were quite obvious.... his argument deals with 6 outcomes because he's trying to show you that 1/300 chance is not the same as 50/50.
But why 1/300? What are the other 300 outcomes? There is 1. Asteroid doesn't hit earth, and 2. asteroid hits earth. What are the other 298 outcomes? Is what I cannot understand.
@ObliviuxProductions Idk, lets just assume for some random reason there is a chance it could pass through 299 other blocks of space the size of earth making earth 1/300 of a chance of it being hit. It's not a probability of outcomes it's a probability of what are the chances of it getting hit. If you throw a baseball at a brick wall, what are the chances you will hit a specific brick apposed to others, it isn't going to be 1/2 because there are many bricks you could hit.
@ObliviuxProductions the other 299 outcomes are it not hitting Earth. If it had a 50/50 chance, that means they ran a simulation twice and it hit Earth once and missed once. This means they ran a simulation approx 300 times and it had 1 hit.
Apparently you do not understand the concept of 1/300, it simply means that 1 out of 300 passes it would hit, lets say this whole thing is a theoretical simulation, they run the test 300 times, it hits once, even the slightest gravity change can mean it hits or misses, that is where the 300 comes into play. That is all.
... so it will happen in more than 800 years.... its car sized.... let the people that live 800 years from now worry about it lol as long as it aint me or my unborn kids
lets say mankind is still around in 2880, and lets say that 1/300 chance the astriod did hit us, with the improvements of technology increasing knowledge of the universe, i think we have a favoured chance to surive.
do you want to wake up in the morning and see 42 billion little asteroids falling from the sky and destroying everything? ever seen Armageddon when it hits France
1. Solar Flare 2. Black Hole 3. Core Destabilization 3. Moon crashing into Earth 4. Sun turning into a red giant or blowing up. 5. Nuclear devastation. 6. Super massive asteroid. 7. Milky Way crashing into Andromeda. 8. Deathray. 9. Death Star. 10. Galaxy Gun. 12. R2D2 firing a Galaxy Gun by accident. 13.Super Robot Nazis who are also Zombies conquering Earth... 14. Dividing by Zero. I'm sure there are many more.
@mikerules999 You forgot that plutos gunna come back and kick our asses for calling it an astroid you know that saying..."Start calling pluto an astroid, itll start acting like one!"
@NazimUddin15 Yahh... that's true, Ripley's Believe it or Not states by 2100 half the world will be uninhabitable if we don't act on behalf of Climate Change. And we already know now that the Sahara desert is growing bigger everyday.
I doubt it... i mean with all these new PLANET DESTROYING weapons (OK exaggeration.. but ye) and "Climate Destabilisation" or as we like to call "Global Warming" who believes our planet will last until then... I have my hopes (even though I wont be alive in 800 years) but im thinking realistically.. We already caused enough damage...
the fact is global warming has always been occuring, just that we are speeding it up even more, but the way you say the earth will not be here in 800 years is wrong, if you believe in evolution you will believe that the earth is millions and millions of years old, just because it gets hot and humans die or there is anoth ice age doesn't mean the earth will be destroyed, it just means we wont be here to see it happen, by we i mean the human race :)
I'm not saying that the Earth will be destroyed within 800 years, I'm just saying there are possibilities.
Also, I think we should be concentrating on how to solve some major issues of today's world, such as slowing down Global Warming, rebuilding the economy, finding cures for diseases, or maybe even helping people in Haiti. But, this is still an issue to be dealt with, but more pressing issues are at hand.
Lastly, I think with technology rising, it should be simple to deal with this..
Anything that ways 50kg that crashes into Earth is a threat, and the problem is the speed something is coming at. For example, if you did a cannonball into a swimming pool the more you weighed and the faster you hit the water, the bigger the ripple around you.
And by that time wouldn't the crusts shift appart making either a super contenent or a lot of small contenents? But by that time we might have colonized the moon or found a way to turn mars into a beautifull utopia.
Well can't we fire a nuke strapped to a hydrogen bomb straped to a spaceship? Or maybe make a giant array of satalites that act almost like a missle defence???
@mrquazu NO IT AINT THE EARTH WAS MENT TO END ABOUT 800 YEARS AGO DUMBASS BUT NO IT DIDNT JUST COS THE CALENDA SHOWS 2012 AND NO MORE IT DONT MEAN ITS GANNA BLUDY END DIPSHIT
We could put the retired Hubble telescope on this asteroid with an accompanying transmission tower complex and launch it into solar orbit.
This would be extremely simple as a consortium undertaking on the part of A.E.A. The America-Europe-Asia Aerospace Consortium consisting of a conglomerate of scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs to the absolute exclusion of all governmental interference.
Nuclear pulse space engines produced on a moon base would use near-earth asteroids as space exploration platforms. The mass of the asteroid could be used as "fuel" as well by mining the stern into small pieces and ejecting them by a shape memory catapult causing thrust without ignition. The minute gravity would retain an escape vessel acting as the bridge that would return a human crew to Earth or to a moon or asteroid belt base. They could be used to mine water from the ort cloud as well.
definitely a career opportunity, outla. But you or some other individual would have to start the company. There are forty trillion dollars floating around out there in the global money pool whose owners are just waiting to throw it at you.
In space, a vehicle and platform doesn't need shape, only mass. Near earth asteroids could then become an opportunity rather than a hazard. They could be harvested. Piece of cake. "Science Platforms Incorporated"... Don't wait for NASA to do it.
Well I don't know about that. That seems really Earth centric. I mean, think about it. You are this meteor hurtling through space minding your own business when this strange solar system comes out of nowhere, in your path and starts whipping you around then a planet called Earth pulls you into it forcefully and explodes you. Sounds like it is the Earth that is the aggressor here to me.
This message brought to you from the coalition of meteoric equality.
What happened to the 2012 ELE asteroid? The lizards had 65 million years on this Earth but we're only going to get a few 100 thousand; that sucks! lol
over population is unlikely to lead to extinction. What would likely happen is much famine and war caused by lack of resources and competition. The effect s of this, though horrible would stabilize the population. It happens often in nature, so far we've staved it off with technology.
If this was the case with any other spicie, I would agree. The problem is, that humans care TOO much about human rights. Every human has the right to live, and we use way to much resourses to help people that for example are going to die anyways. I'm not saying its a bad thing, not at all, I'm just saying its not a very smart thing to do, when that person is going to do nothing good to the society.
2880 we will all be driving around on the USS enterprise by then, it would be sooner if more money was put forward to help out space missions, considering space is mankinds future yet, people seem to be more interested in giving billions to banks, and only millions to space
nah. billions to space, but trillions for war. what does that say? we also are neglecting that there is little funding to help stop climate change. meanwhile, the world will be messed up before we can go to space. all because humans cant seem to respect eachother's differences.
but if humans are in space it doesnt matter as all heavy industry will be off the planet and pollution would drop tremendously , climate change has been blown out of all proportion any way, the government always has to make the populous fear something and its now climate change, just like swine flu/bird flu/terrorists
What a joke it would be if we're too busy fighting wars and bickering and we end up getting killed by an impact--instead of realizing that it's something that could completely destroy us at ANY TIME--and we're doing almost nothing about it.
NASA, et al, are NOT currently tracking every possible dangerous asteroid. We could be smacked and NOT KNOW it was coming--or know perhaps only weeks in advance.
blow the fucking thing up. debree would be too scattered away to be any thread to us. small rocks ussually just vaporize when they enter the atmosphere.
did you not hear the year it was gonna crash? 2,880.
it's not like we're gonna recieve all the debree, at that time it should be so spread out it's just gonna go around us, and maybe a few unfortunate pieces would end up here. also by that time we should be able to take on bigger rocks.
well we almost got hit by 1-2 i believe last year, do there is NO guarantee, that scientist are always right... They admit the cant track all asteroid out there...
I will not be suprised if they came out with a sooner date...

YearZer02022 9 months ago
@ObliviuxProductions thats not the point there saying that in the year 2880 it could hit between 1-300 days

NazimUddin15 2 years ago
lol yea im with ya
coinmaster10 2 years ago
the fact is global warming has always been occuring, just that we are speeding it up even more, but the way you say the earth will not be here in 800 years is wrong, if you believe in evolution you will believe that the earth is millions and millions of years old, just because it gets hot and humans die or there is anoth ice age doesn't mean the earth will be destroyed, it just means we wont be here to see it happen, by we i mean the human race :)
Yungahnewerakid 2 years ago 2
I'm not saying that the Earth will be destroyed within 800 years, I'm just saying there are possibilities.
Also, I think we should be concentrating on how to solve some major issues of today's world, such as slowing down Global Warming, rebuilding the economy, finding cures for diseases, or maybe even helping people in Haiti. But, this is still an issue to be dealt with, but more pressing issues are at hand.
Lastly, I think with technology rising, it should be simple to deal with this..

I wonder...what if the government took a car sized rock from earth into space and then pushed it in the planet....could we all die?
zoidbetag 2 years ago
Anything that ways 50kg that crashes into Earth is a threat, and the problem is the speed something is coming at. For example, if you did a cannonball into a swimming pool the more you weighed and the faster you hit the water, the bigger the ripple around you.
gamemad29 2 years ago
I see...Asteroids travel at a very high speed...and one the size of a car will probably do some major dammage (If a 50Kg object is a threat)
zoidbetag 2 years ago
No, the car sized asteroid did nothing but explode. They tracked it.

We could put the retired Hubble telescope on this asteroid with an accompanying transmission tower complex and launch it into solar orbit.
This would be extremely simple as a consortium undertaking on the part of A.E.A. The America-Europe-Asia Aerospace Consortium consisting of a conglomerate of scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs to the absolute exclusion of all governmental interference.
paulhallart 2 years ago
Nuclear pulse space engines produced on a moon base would use near-earth asteroids as space exploration platforms. The mass of the asteroid could be used as "fuel" as well by mining the stern into small pieces and ejecting them by a shape memory catapult causing thrust without ignition. The minute gravity would retain an escape vessel acting as the bridge that would return a human crew to Earth or to a moon or asteroid belt base. They could be used to mine water from the ort cloud as well.
paulhallart 2 years ago
Wow if they make a career for that it would be so cool.
outlaWeasel 2 years ago
definitely a career opportunity, outla.
Don't wait for NASA to do it.
paulhallart 2 years ago
If the asteroid smashed into the Earth?!

My bet: no human lives that long. Human population is growing so fast, I bet we will only last about 100 more years, maybe 200...
pappegye 2 years ago
over population is unlikely to lead to extinction. What would likely happen is much famine and war caused by lack of resources and competition. The effect s of this, though horrible would stabilize the population. It happens often in nature, so far we've staved it off with technology.
alexkidd3d 2 years ago
If this was the case with any other spicie, I would agree. The problem is, that humans care TOO much about human rights. Every human has the right to live, and we use way to much resourses to help people that for example are going to die anyways. I'm not saying its a bad thing, not at all, I'm just saying its not a very smart thing to do, when that person is going to do nothing good to the society.

2880 we will all be driving around on the USS enterprise by then, it would be sooner if more money was put forward to help out space missions, considering space is mankinds future yet, people seem to be more interested in giving billions to banks, and only millions to space
Buttmunch5000 2 years ago
nah. billions to space, but trillions for war. what does that say? we also are neglecting that there is little funding to help stop climate change. meanwhile, the world will be messed up before we can go to space. all because humans cant seem to respect eachother's differences.
63NY1 2 years ago
the UK government gave £220 million to ESA yet gave £37billion to banks, climate change will not matter if we can get to space in the next 100 years
Buttmunch5000 2 years ago
Oh yes it will; Terraforming = artificial climate change on a massive scale
ecyor0 2 years ago
but if humans are in space it doesnt matter as all heavy industry will be off the planet and pollution would drop tremendously , climate change has been blown out of all proportion any way, the government always has to make the populous fear something and its now climate change, just like swine flu/bird flu/terrorists
Buttmunch5000 2 years ago

What a joke it would be if we're too busy fighting wars and bickering and we end up getting killed by an impact--instead of realizing that it's something that could completely destroy us at ANY TIME--and we're doing almost nothing about it.
NASA, et al, are NOT currently tracking every possible dangerous asteroid. We could be smacked and NOT KNOW it was coming--or know perhaps only weeks in advance.

threadysparrow 2 years ago
blow the fucking thing up. debree would be too scattered away to be any thread to us. small rocks ussually just vaporize when they enter the atmosphere.
Maracachucho 2 years ago
well that really depends on the size of the asteroid...
These objects are moving thousand of of mph , so instead of 1 object moving "5k mph+"
we would then have probably hundred of pieces..
Moving that fast.. it still could do a pretty good amount of damage.
DeveloperJermaine 2 years ago
did you not hear the year it was gonna crash? 2,880.
it's not like we're gonna recieve all the debree, at that time it should be so spread out it's just gonna go around us, and maybe a few unfortunate pieces would end up here. also by that time we should be able to take on bigger rocks.
Maracachucho 2 years ago
well we almost got hit by 1-2 i believe last year, do there is NO guarantee, that scientist are always right... They admit the cant track all asteroid out there...
