The Living Mormon Prophet Joseph F Smith, 1905, wrote "Blood Atonement and the Origin of Polygamy". He says Joe was killed BECAUSE of polygamy. Maybe it was the part "Nullifying all non Mormon Marriages and contracts"? Maybe it was Sidney Rigdons DEATH THREATS OF EXTERMINATION PRIOR to Carthage that brought all this about.
