My dad brought me up listening to Dr Hook, I have been lucky enough to see dennis playing live twice. I love this song, Shel wrote a true classic here, a band who where/arent treated with the respect they deserve.
Ellabella - Your dad had good taste. Dr. Hook was always a little too goofy for me but I liked this from the first listen and have liked it ever since. Thanks YouGoomba ...
My daddy used to sing this to me when i was really little to put me to sleep. and he would sing it to me cuz my name is kerry and every time i hear this song i get all emotional and start to cry even when my dad plays it :') And this is the song that my dad is going to sing at my wedding! You rock Dr.Hook!!! Keep on keepin on ;)
I always feel the need to sing "Bottle in a brown bag" a little bit louder but not one bit less passionately then the rest of this brilliant Masterpiece of a song <3
Mine too. Just listening to these songs puts me right back in the front seat of his old Chrysler driving me and my little sis around whenever he could.
This is so achingly good, it would take guys like these to add enough gristle to make real instead of schmaltz. You can feel the soul bleeding on the skid row pavement.
i'm an old dawg to, first heard about dr. hook in 1971, been hooked since. my lord what a show these guys put on, it was an emotional experience that you would take in to old age, damn what a joy these guy are to listen to even now. ya had to be there, and i was, not sure how many times i got to see there shows, but it's been more than 35 shows. we knew Ray, as he's from Chickasaw Alabama. and i to lived in Chickasaw for a few years. God bless to Dr. Hook and their fans. keep-em alive, ya'll...
@ConditionOfAnonymity Well I first heard "Sylvia's Mother" on a crazy weekend when I was a young naiive girl hanging out with girls looser and faster than me with older boyfriends. My head was spinning from Tyrolia and weed and almost getting raped. So you can bet I can't hear that song without getting stirred up!!! I found this song only about a decade ago, shortly after I saw them live. Awesome, awesome show!!! The power went out 4 times and they just rolled with it. I bawled like a baby!!!
I love this song. My X-husband & I were together for 20 years with two sons now in their mid twenties. We were divorced in 2000. He was an alcoholic, now recovering. We are both remarried but he used to sing this song to me changing the name to Terri, my name. When I left him he gave me a cassette with all of their old love songs on it. I still miss him and this song makes me sad but I still love it.
Just returned from a DAMN good friends funeral. This was one of his favorite songs. He was the reason I started riding a motorcycle again. That damn well may have saved my sanity. Goodbye brother ride forever in heaven
brought tears to my eyes remembering this song blasting when i was a kid. i miss my dad. thanks dr. hook... it's so much more than a good fucking song.
I really do love this song, I was brought up with it, my Dad adores this song so much, he named me after it (:
this song has so many memories linked to it from when i was younger, and the song has a good meaning to it, i can see why my dad enjoys it so much. I love you daddy (:
@n8tureboy thanks for the sound advice my dear i try to thank my dad everyday for the fond love of music and books both as well as other good values he has instilled in me :)
@preciouzgurl You don't know how many times I see comments like this on here and it just makes me smile! I grew up with Dr. Hook and all those other great bands of that period and that music will last forever! When I hear about a young person (ie my kids, 23 &25) getting into it, it just warms my heart. Bless you guys and bless your parents for sharing it with you!
@ladyfuschia i'm glad i could make your day a lil brighter :)
my father is a terrific man with a teriffic taste and love in music, he has raised me on all the good meaningful music. don't get me wrong i can appricate some of today's as well lol but none of them have the emotion and raw talent that dr hook, elton joh, conway twitty, burton cummings etc put into their music.
i'm currently on the hunt for the song black eyed susan by paririe oyster
i listen to this song when i was 3-5 years old and i just listened to it after all these years and still love that last part when he screams carry me lol

There are two sides to Dr. Hook. The fun "Cover of the Rolling Stone" side and their deeper more poignant side.
This in arguably them at their best at the latter.
