fundamentally bad advice here.Shanks are caused by hitting from the top, plain and simple.Cure the over the top move, cure the shank. In other words, people who shank need to be taught how to get "on plane".
Jimmy is half right on this one. Getting the left elbow turning down is key, because it promotes staying connected, and staying connected keeps the club on the proper orbit. OTOH, pulling the heel of the club down often gets people moving the club out from the body, and the orbit moves out, causing a shank. I'm guessing JB knows this, but his explanation isn't going to convince many.
sorry Jimmy. not on this one! 99% of people don't stay behind the ball and certainly do not pull the handle! i would wager less than 9% of people shank this way. there are a myriad of ways one can hit a chinese lateral!
JIMMY, kudos for your tips/inspirations!! ARNIE has inspired many SENIORS in his PROSTATE awareness;perhaps you could inspire your BOOMER friends in...Vision awareness...AMD(macular degeneration). AMD has now surpassed Prostate cancer in stats(Novartis.com). A silent anomaly, AMD needs your HELP in "awareness!!).
Boy, do you know about what you are talking? That's quite theory in slow motion. Really almost 99,9% of shanks are the result of improper balance when the golfer do not shift his weight in the downswing towards the target but towards his toes.
The "Cover with the toe" idea isn't literal and if you take it literally it will result in dead pulls. It's more of a mental mindset to get you swinging down with the square of the clubface and not pulling( or draging) with the heel of the club.
wow, I dont l;ike this advice at all. Plus I think most shanks come from over the top and golfers getting ahead of the ball. The advice doesn't seem good to me-it will cause big pulls. You havbe to learn to start downswing with the lower body and be able to release the club with the body. But hey, this guy is an expert-I just like to think Im an expert hehe
I disagree to an extent. If you try what he is saying you will hit a lot of dead pulls with the irons and also a lot of fan shots. If you intitiate the downswing with the left hip turning to the left, centrifugal force will square the clubhead. You dont have to manipulate it the way Ballard is saying. The golf swing is too quick to be manipulating the hands in the downswing.
tigerswede, so you do not agree that when clubface is left open, you will shank it low and slicing to the right, causing pain and suffering in the wrists and left elbow? you ride the short bus!
@tamaman35 That is a possibility, but not very likely. I have never seen anyone on film (or in person for that matter) that would be able to keep the club so open that the heel is the first point of contact. At that position, even if they made contact with the face first, the ball would shoot completely to the right anyway. The shanks would be the least of their worries. A person that unaware of a grossly open face does not have the shanks; they are just a beginner without any fundamentals.
i always have a repeated cycle. for about 3-4 weeks im hitting the ball great, about 155 yards with my 9 iron, 260 driver. and the period of 3-4 weeks after that i am shanking the ball 30 yards right with every single club. makes me wonder if i should quit golf
lots of things can cause a shank , weight moving toward toes on downswing ,to flat, weak right hand grip forces elbow to move away from ribs in downswing , clubs that dont fit! lots of things, send me your swing i tell u what is happening hitmanhawky best lessons on the tube period! thanks hitmanhawky
i had the shanks and it came from coming too much from the inside on the back swing always on the short irons -keep your height and swing more vertically -up and down-try it see how you go-jimmy is great the left elbow tip is one of the best!!!
just cured my shanks today, had em for a while now. just came down to tension. all i had to do was relax at adress and hold the club loosely and think about that throughout the swing. give it a try!
sounds like youre just coming across the ball a touch; with your short irons its exaggerated due to the steeper angle of attack. work on youre swing plane and balance. they will go
Jimmy zeroed in on exactly what I do when I shank. The ole "T Rex" arms. But I think its important to realize there is a bigger concept at work. I think this shank move happens when people "lose the ground" or don't hit down to compress the ball AND stop rotating their torso. If you stop rotating your torso, your hands will fly at the ball and you'll hang back. Once you hit it very thin/and or shank, the tendency is to try to save with your hands, and really stop rotating! It becomes a flinch!
this tip works for good golfers who already know where impact is, but tell a high handicaper he need to release the club early is a sure way to ruin any chance of hitting a good shot
This is EXCELLENT info for me. I am a pretty good golfer who will go into the shanks now and again. My fix is to stop swinging for a day, and then hit baby swing punches to reset. What he explains as the cause, is exactly what I do. this just got me out! I think its also important to realize that there is usually a big concept flaw that causes an error. But in this case, its so great for someone to nail exactly what I feel when I just go sour for whatever reason.
I don't agree with this guy... a shank doesn't come from introducing the heel with a fanned clubface. Maybe in an extreme case, but that's unlikely, even for a beginner. The only reason for a shank is clubface that's too far away from you at impact. A person must retrain their muscle memory to keep those hands a tiny bit closer to the body at impact (assuming your fundementals are sound). It takes some getting used to, and you can add power after it becomes more natural.
@tigerswede3 I notice I hit the ball off the heel 90% of the time with the long irons and driver, because with the long clubs I sometimes take the club farthur away from my body to get my ark wider and consequently the clubface ends up a few centimeters in front of the ball. But I actually SHANK the ball when I'm trying to hit a minimal cut shot which goes straight. Any tips? Did you ever hit off the heel when you were learning how to hit a straight cut?
This tip may work for some, but there are a million reasons why people shank. I play to a 4 hdcp, and have the shanks. My plane angle flattens during the downswing, creating a more distant ark; resulting in a draw or a hosel rocket. If your fundementals are sound, you have to retrain your muscle memory to keep the hands closer to you during impact... which will also a pull from time to time. The only thing that causes the shanks is a clubface that's too far from you!
i used this tip as well and it really helped me. it's an easy swing thought to think about on your downswing to cover the ball with the toe of ur club.
i was practicing in a common arear around my house and started shanking it...one went straight right bounces off the side walk over the fence and into the pool where dozens of people were. i almost killed someone and it scared the crap out of me.
is that a long sleeve shirt or a short sleeve

what about standing too close to the ball and raising the club up at impact...? Those are what cause the shanks....
