Dust varies and can appear deep reddish to even blue! watch?v=BNM7Qcbx The atmosphere is substantial enough (and gravity low enough) to support quite a bit of dust transport--hence a planet of mostly greenish rocks that appears reddish due to a blanket of Fe Oxide dust plus numerous dust devils, planet wide dust storms, etc.

Once it reaches the martian atmosphere, it has to decelerate from over 27000 mph down to just 900 in about 30 seconds using its parachute and atmospheric resistance. It decelerates from 900 down to about 250mph to drop off from it and still has to endure the impact of the fall using the "bubble wrap".
