@12rosebud12 They have a pretty bad accent, yes..but they are supposed to..it makes perfect sense for the scene..They are portraying immigrants who've been living in the US for about a year and are learning the language as they go along..it doesn't have to be perfect..in the movie the audience appreciates the effort..

The American one turns the story into kitsch. Ruth Leuwerik is the best German actress of the 50s and plays her role much more German (and the Trapp-Family is still from Germany) than J.Roberts!

@12rosebud12 In a way, you can thank this German movie, for getting to enjoy Julie Andrews as Maria. This movie's success at the time, was the impulse to create TSoM in the first place. The oriignal Trapp Family singers sound nothing like TSoM, since they weren't Broadway singers. The repertoire in the German film is more authentic, at least to a certain degree (Bach, Palestrina..) Authenticity aside, I do enjoy TSoM as a musical..Julie Andrews is terrific.
