Google Earth has made this feature free in basic version, altough it requires high-speed internet connection to get going in practice. Tested Google Earth with WiMax in Moscow, more or less usable.
Only binary form is available at this point (project is a part of commercial suite, takes some time to cut out this functionality). But there are plans to open it sometime in the future, no specific date.
@novorado I did something similar with gpsd. The Windows version has a GPS option built-in, but I think that the basic Linux version doesn't.

I think that qgps doesn't exist anymore, or if it does, it hasn't been updated in a long time.

Interesting.
My program is doing something comparable, but with less functions implemented yet.
It's written in 100% java though.
