I remember that the hero encountered the chiropteran Tohko (who was disguised as a shrine maiden) about five years before the story begins. After Saya chases Tohko away, the hero was bleeding badly and about to die. Saya, as a master chiropteran, reluctantly converts the hero into chiropteran to save his life. She also somehow ensures that his memory of his near-death at the hands of Tohko is suppressed to spare him the horrible life of a blood-drinking chiropteran.
