  • hey im gonna install this on my desktop. it loooks cool so far! lolz

  • I am using ubuntu 10.04 in virtualbox and i just installed the package and hey presto! It is a diffrent ui from that one,

  • Heya, i was wondering if you could me out a little. i have installed my ATI graphics driver and i still cannot enable desktop effects. Is there something i am completely missing?

  • @skaterjam1 Are you sure the ATI driver is working correctly? How did you install it?

  • @thisweekinlinux @skaterjam1 just go to google > tupe ati > open ati drivers web > then search for you model and install it !

  • @skaterjam1 i dont know where you get the drivers? NEVER install video drivers from additional drivers! go to google and google ati drivers! open the web and give the needed info and download!!

  • Hello Im using Linux and im kinda new to this and im not a programmer and im using 10.10 also im having trouble opening things like my downloads

  • @randyd55 I wasn't a programmer when I started using Linux either. :P I am now, but I don't have to do any programming to use it. ;)

Are you using Unity on 10.10, like I showed in this video?

  • @thisweekinlinux Im using Linux 10.10 Dwn idkw hats the diffrence lol but my friend will give me mint soon lol but im trying to laern how t use this btw when i said "downloads" i meant like Installing "Games" :D (maplestory, Need For SpeedWorld lol :D)

  • @randyd55 ohhh, ok. I understand now. installing software doesn't work as it would in Windows. You either have to look in the Software Center (Applications -> Software Center) to see if what you're looking for is available, or go to the company's website to see if they've made a Linux version. If not (as with Need for Speed), you can try running it in Wine. Wine is a compatibility layer that allows some Windows applications to run on Linux.

  • @thisweekinlinux My Friend said to use direct X 9.c(maplestory) and he said it then should work like windows but idk also i looked at Wine HQ it say NFS doesnt work well it doesnt work for wine that is

  • @randyd55 If it doesn't work in Wine, it's probably just not going to work yet. It might be worth looking to see if it will work with PlayOnLinux, Cedega, or Crossover Games, but those are all loosely wine based too.

  • Regarding this unity package... Does it get updated along with the 11.04 (alpha)?? [I wanna know if the new features will be released on this as well]

  • @wdrpsp19 the one I demonstrated here will not be updated with 11.04, because it's the mutter-based one that came with 10.10's netbook edition. If you install the version that's a compiz plugin from a PPA, it should continue to be updated.

  • will it work in vmware, i have vmware workstation 7.1 ????

  • @MrJdy1 it might. you have to have 3d acceleration enabled. I'm not sure if VMWare workstation supports that, does it?

  • i've tryed.. 2 years ago and it worked :D

  • i will buy those days a 4 gb memory stick...and i will use that one :D

Oh, and can I run ubuntu only from the momory stick? I've mean to do not use the HDD...

  • @nopcnolife1 I know it's possible to install it on the memory stick, but I haven't done it before.

  • @thisweekinlinux

It's possible and I did it however all the changes you make while using the system aren't saved on memory stick so it just works pretty much like liveCD.

Perhaps there is something you can do to fix that but I don't know any solution.

  • @K0njad oh, I meant that I think you can install from the CD directly onto the USB drive, just selecting it instead of the internal Hard drive.

  • i've tried to install on a mini SD 2 gb momory card using linux usbcreator or something like that. It's restart's but when is loading nothing happened. I have wait about 10 minutes, and nothing happened :(

  • @nopcnolife1 does it just go to a black/blank screen?

  • @thisweekinlinux

NO, it shows the ubuntu icon and the 4 circles (loading bar) and is loading and loading, but nothing happened...i've wait and half an hour, but still nothing. I will try again when i will buy an USB stick

  • @nopcnolife1 I will say, I haven't tried running from an SD card, so it could have something to do with that, or with the USB creator, though I doubt that.

  • So you CAN put Ubuntu Desktop on a laptop? please someone answer.

  • @MrTyAaron yes, Ubuntu Desktop edition can be installed on a laptop, desktop, or netbook at least.

  • @thisweekinlinux Alright alright alright, now Next question, which would you recommend? I definitely like desktop better but is the netbook better for a laptop or does it matter? Thanks man.

  • @MrTyAaron with Ubuntu 10.10, the Netbook edition was designed specifically for netbooks, but you can use it on a laptop or a desktop (like I showed in this video). In 11.04, it's going to be the default interface, with some significant changes.

End of the day, you can use either of them, and interchange easily by just logging out and selecting the Desktop or Netbook edition. It's all up to your preference.

  • i found the video, tnx a lot!

  • @nopcnolife1 Good luck with it!

  • Hello, I am really upset with my Graphic card, here is my config of my laptop, 1-i got DELL XPS m1530 2- nVidia 8600M 3- using Vmware workstation 7.1, registered. 4- installed ubuntu 10.10 properly without any error, even updated it. Fisrt thing, i dont know how to install nVidia driver in vm , ubuntu second , how to install compiz, and effects, third, want to learn ubuntu, where to find tutorial complete. forth, how to master in Command line interface (any tutorial ) plz help me, cheers
  • @ChrisRur0uni if you're running VMWare, it doesn't use your Nvidia graphics exactly. It runs a virtual graphics adapter. It's been a while since I dealt with Vmware, but I believe you need to install the Vmware tools to be able to use compiz and effects.

I've done some tutorials on "An Intro to Linux" and "An Intro to the Linux Terminal" if you're interested in those, and there are TONS of great websites with info out there. ssh64.com has a lot of commands on it.

  • With Ubuntu 11.04 I'll reinstall Gnome.

  • Lnux Is Awesome!! . I didn't like your video so thumbs down.

  • @drek507 ok then, thanks.

  • this is a very good os i have no 3d card and it runs very smoothly

  • i'm a noob to linux, this unity interface is what made me interested, iv installed this onto my laptop(intel celeron, 1gig ram, no 3d acceleration)

the os works well, it is slow in loading applications sometimes but nothing i cant live with. it was a pain setting up the wireless settings though as im behind a proxy server.

    your videos are very helpful.

  • I've tried this on my laptop and i don't like it, the mean reason is that i can't move or auto hide the launcher, hopefully they will have this feature in 11.04

  • Looks ugly but im gonna try it thank you.

  • @AzazerLucas

just search for the "appearance" app

you can pin it to the dock if you want.

When they switch back to compiz, they should have many more options available

  • why can't i update to 10.10? i use the update manager and clicking on check. is searching but it can't find eny updates? plz help. (srry for my bad english)

  • @MrSebzi What version are you currently running?

  • @thisweekinlinux 10.04

  • @MrSebzi you might try going to a terminal and typing in "sudo update-manager -d"

  • @MrSebzi hi! go to software sources from software center menu. than i think in the 2nd tab find upgrade option is set at long term release only.

Change the it to normal upgrades.

Hope that helps . follow me on twitter as @animeshmeher and ask me if you need further help. thanks.

  • @animeshmeher thx for the help but didn't work so i typed sudo update-manager -d in the terminal and theb it worked :P thx eny ways : ) (srry for my bad english)

  • i am actually ok with this.

  • Well, first of all, nice video , second, the unity interface is interesting in a away: good for netbooks, because of the small screens. Now, unity in the desktop edition, sorry but thats lame, i love ubuntu the way it is in the desktop version, Gnome is a great user interface getting better and better, and if really ubuntu 11.04 comes with unity i will change. I understand they want to change but, listen to us users, change for the better, not to worse...

  • @gackthugo

weird because i just tested it on my dads pc and he says its a lot easier on him than regular ubuntu gnome, he almost gave me a hug, because that was exactly what he wanted: simplicity and a nice desktop with big icons + search, were he doesnt get lost so easily

sure for us "power users" we want much MORE options and in linux we can (thats the beauty of it, there is something for everyone), but i can now really see unity as welcomed for regular/novice users

  • i tried unity and there were SOOOOOOO many errors

  • @cakelover33

yea mutter doesnt work well with my open ati drivers on my laptop yet, but with my intel desktop works really good

i guess when they switch to compiz things should work better

  • @madjunir i have a laptop to and it has open ati drivers

  • Will GNOME still be around for a long time? I hope so.

  • I'm not so crazy about this, maybe I'll just switch to fedora or something.

  • @MetalShreader There's always the option to install the Gnome 2.x session on 11.04

  • @MetalShreader

I'm hoping Linux Mint Debian Edition will fill the void.

  • Hey, i intend getting a 500-700 £/$/€ laptop in May-June. Will ubuntu 11.04 be fast, and will it support all the 64bit and other add on stuff?

    Thanks

  • @koolguy889 11.04 will hopefully have performance improvements, but it really depends on the laptop you're going to put it on.

    64-bit will definitely be supported.

  • is a bit cute

  • Its nice :-D i always liked compiz !! I'm gonna try it in my pc :-D yay GO GO UBUNTU :-)

  • I like the netbook version its reminds me of OS X 9 on a iMac. The interface isn't difficult to navigate. The thisweekinlinux instructor was precise and I was able to follow him very easily. I am a fan on the interface.

What's next? I can't wait for Ubuntu LTS 11.04. Great Video.

  • I just tried it, and it was very laggy (mouse had poor response) on a fast laptop system (512MB video card). So far I plan on sticking with Gnome.

  • This looks cool, the side bar on the left is deff sumthing i would like to have. What does RC actually mean, What is unity and are their any differences with the Netbook version besides just the look??

  • @kommitt3d RC means "Release Candidate", meaning if they don't find anything wrong before release day, that's what you'll get.

Unity is a new interface Canonical is designing as a shell for Gnome. The biggest differences between it and default Gnome are just the look and layout, but it's going to be changing significantly over the next 6 months to accomodate the Desktop layout as well.

  • @thisweekinlinux Ohh okay cool thanks for responding. btw I just recently started a dual boot with vista and ubuntu because of your videos. I am trying to learn as much about linux as possible and i'll be viewing your tutorial on terminal commands soon!

  • Tried it recently on my advent 2213.. just did not want to know... well back to mint!

  • Haha, in 11.04 I'll instead gnome instead!

Fuck, Unity is the reason I don't ever run netbook versions.

  • its beauty but where are the free

i ll go to gentoo :)

  • I'll try it out but hopefully they don't completely remove the Desktop interface for 11.04.

  • I tested unity on my pc but when i came back to gnome i lose the title bar on maximized windows... what i can do to fix it?

  • I have tried it on a few computers. Its "ok". I really liked the previous netbook edition over this new unity style. and the previous netbook edition would kick butt if you had touch screen.

Anyhow... hope this dockbar is movable in the future, like to the bottom... otherwise, why not just use docky?

  • ill try it

  • Unity looks like gnome-do....

  • I love how personal people get about the Unity issue in 11.04.

it's like "THIS is what they gonna put in 11.04?? OMFG! I'm switching to another distro!"

as if the distro is made just for them,

as if you can't change anything,

as if they're not going to adapt it to the desktop in the next 6 months.

    n00bs!

  • @LuigiPeach I'm sure Ubuntu will make some major changes to it in the next 6 months. Not sure how "ready for the desktop" it will be, but we'll just see.

  • @LuigiPeach

there is an option to switch back to the normal view too. I personaly like the change to the GUI

  • Comment removed

  • Looks reaaally good. Looking forward to the 11.04 GUI!

  • THIS is what they are going to in 11.04? Seriously? Time for me to find a new distro soon.

  • @drmgiver halfway, sorta, kinda. the little bar on the left should be movable, and the whole-screen applications menu should become much smaller and go to the upper left corner. And the whole thing will be compizp-based. but yeah

  • @drmgiver Can't you just download the GNOME version if you don't like it?

  • @Deliciousfruit233 Not if 11.04 doesn't have one.

  • @drmgiver

You do realize that Gnome will still be available?

  • @drmgiver

I swear you people act like it's never gonna change.

  • Has been too slow for me aswell. Eventhough, I really like the new interface !

  • it looks like a bug for me when you open your notebook edition desktop i guess need to be fixed on your video 2.46 min you can see a black barre who split in 2 your desktop when you scroll your icons. specially when you click on the application button and you scroll the icons on left you can see that black barre scrolling at the same time with your scroll that same icons ... there is another one when you scroll the icons there's some of them who desappear or hide then they comeback ...

  • @FennecPhillies It's a bug with recordmydesktop, because it wasn't actually showing the black bars on my screen.

  • I installed it on my Acer d250 and it runs just fine. As for the unity, I find the dock a nice addition but for that small netbook screen i think it eats up a lot of workspace. I have to switch to full screen view to read a web page for example, smthing i'm not really a fan of. Also, i cant understand the way you add apps in the dock. Generally i think is a nice-looking distro and i love the simplicity of the software center. Though ubuntu is a bloated-distro, i'll keep it for the time being =)

  • @MrSleepless87 nice. :)

  • I don't have problems right clicking the Unity bar and adding or removing apps.

  • @gstamo01 I didn't see the option to add apps, but yeah, removing definitely worked.

  • does ATI Mobilty Radeon HD 4200 support 3D? Sorry but I don't know much about my card...

  • @vaibzzz123 you would have to install the proprietary ATI drivers, but yes.

  • @thisweekinlinux Thanks, it worked fine for (btw, can you make a video about how to upgrade to 10.10 with wubi install? I need this for my laptop and im only 12 so I don't know much about partitioning and all that stuff, thanks)

  • @vaibzzz123 I don't really have a full Windows machine at this point. I'll see if I can work something out. :/

  • @thisweekinlinux Thankyou! I've subbed to your chanel and subbed to your other one too you rock!

  • @vaibzzz123 duh...

  • @WorldOfANerd I thought you could run it on Intel cards, because a lot of netbooks come with Intel. Either way though, if Lubuntu is working out for you, awesome. :) I'm actually getting ready to install it on my laptop to test it out. Just removing Kubuntu right now.

  • I'm using Unity on my Laptop and it works great. I think it's absolutely suitable for Desktop or Laptop users.

  • @80486er yeah, it's entirely up to your preference. :)

  • Hey Jordan,

I'm actually going to install this on my HP Touchsmart Tm2, I'll message you and let you know how it goes. I guess it's supposed to be kind of buggy with touchscreens. Will make a video at some point demonstrating it.

  • @smartarted awesome! if you want to make it a video response, that would be awesome. :)

  • Installing Ubuntu on my Asus EEE-pc 900 was one of the most frustrating things I have ever tried and it actually dosnt even work properly yet.

installing hardware in Ubuntu is absolutely hell and just getting WIFI to work is an absolute impossibility. Apparently theres a major bug with WPA2. Not even an external USB wifi card works.

Webcam dosnt work. SD-card reader only worked after days of searching for information. And theres no default installed device manager. Frustration galore.

  • @mYOzZyKaT I read on a blog a few minutes ago that the EeePC 900 had some issues with 10.10. Very odd. Also very specific to that model (meaning, I'm running 10.10, and everything worked out of the box, except the graphics drivers, which were a quick install)

  • @thisweekinlinux Mine also works but after installing the device manager I saw a number of things not installed correctly or missing drivers.

Do you know why theres not a device manager installed as default in Ubuntu?..

tried with both the netbook and desktop edition and both had the same issues.

Maybe its meant to be that way..

  • @mYOzZyKaT That's actually a really good question. I normally use hardinfo if I'm looking to get all the hardware listed in one place. What did you end up installing?

Might be worth checking brainstorm.ubuntu. com to see if anyone's suggested adding some device manager by default.

  • @thisweekinlinux I just opened the Ubuntu Software center and typed in device manager and got a generic gnome device manager 0.2 by David Zeuthen. It dosnt really do much other than display information about the installed devices in clear way giving you a somewhat good overview.

Have you ever come across your Ubuntu just freezing up so you have to reboot? Mine does that about once a day in the most perfect times just while writing emails or something like that

  • @mYOzZyKaT Yeah, I hadn't searched for device manager yet. :P

Nope, I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop since it released 4 days ago, and it hasn't locked up once. Odd that it would do it so often for you. Perhaps it's hardware/driver related?

  • So, if I do this, would it mess up my GNOME install? Thanks!

  • @russjr08 nope. I've still got it on my laptop, it just gives you the option to select "Ubuntu Netbook Edition" on the GDM login screen as well as "Ubuntu Desktop Edition"

  • @russjr08

No, you can switch between GNOME and Untiy.

  • A friend of mine has a netbook with Windows 7 starter, and he doesn't really like because of the restrictions (not able to change background etc.). The Ubuntu netbook edition actually looks like a perfect netbook OS it seems. :D Going to tell him about it the next time I see him. :P

  • My driver is installed and upgraded, but EVERYTHING keeps flipping upside down, and it runs really slow. Horrible experience.

I have an ATI card, and I have only 1gb of ram.

  • @Mizukinkai You know, I've heard of so many people having problems with their ATI cards. I'm really sorry to hear that. I used to have an ATI card in my desktop, but I hated the performance, so I went out of pocket and picked up an Nvidia card from newegg.

  • In 10.04 netbook edition, the titlebar merges itself with the main gnome panel.. right? That was really cool..So i would like to know How to do that in desktop edition (10.10)? 10.10 netbook is not minimalistic.. :(

  • @mohanr2222 that's an applet called Gnome Global Menu. I believe it's in the repositories. However, it doesn't integrate with 100% of the apps at this point. Firefox, for example, doesn't work with it correctly.

  • @thisweekinlinux Well.. i guess that it merges the menu bar with gnome panel.. I am trying to find the applet that merges the title bar with the gnome panel.. just like in jolicloud now..

  • @mohanr2222 ohh, ok. that one I'm not really familiar with. I know I've seen it with jolicloud, which means it should work with Ubuntu, but I haven't looked for it in the past.

  • the wallpaper and buttons still bother me. If trying to win over Windows users, why the buttons for min, max and close on the left? I hate the Unity interface. When i watch youtube videos, i feel like the left part of the screen is lacking.

  • How was your logo graphic animated in the beginning? Please say it was something available on Linux!!

  • @cooltd825 the blue waves are stock HD footage from pond5. com. The image and logo overlay were placed over it using Kdenlive's composite feature.

  • @thisweekinlinux thanks! I'll have to mess around with this neat video editing tool. it's always good to have a way to stick it to the Mac people.

  • @cooltd825 :) glad to help. by the way, I have several video tutorials on Kdenlive if you check out the playlists on my channel.

  • not bead!!!but still problem vith drivers:]!!!

  • not bead!!!but still problem vith drivers:]!!!

  • If I decide I want to remove the netbook interface will it also remove all the Add-ons it installs?

  • @CaptChrisT sadly, no. I should probably update the video description to mention that. If you remove "ubuntu-netbook", it doesn't actually remove anything.

  • Why are there so many glitches?

  • @JeremyPassarelli You mean with the video? I'd guess it's because Unity is such a young project, recordmydesktop hasn't been updated to work with it properly.

  • @thisweekinlinux Yes. Oh, and by the way, I can't find any good Linux distros. for my Desktop. Please help, because it's really overwhelming.

    Here's the specs:

    3 GB of ram

    320 GB Hard Drive

AMD Athlon 7450 Dual Core @ 2.40 GHz

Windows Vista Home Premium w/ SP2

  • @JeremyPassarelli It really depends on what you want/need, and the graphics card you have. Ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition is a fine desktop distro, as is Fedora 13 (14 is coming in a few weeks). OpenSUSE is decent, but I don't prefer it.

  • Hi Jordan, trying this on my 10.10 desktop now and I like it! I was wondering, do you know of a way to resize the icons in the side bar/dock? I'd like to make it smaller if it's possible. I can't seem to find a way. Thanks in advance.

  • @roccoscirocco sadly, I haven't seen any way to configure it yet. :(

  • @thisweekinlinux Bummer! Thanks man.

  • unforunately, im no longer an Ubuntu user

I tried to update & every file came up corrupted when it tried to install O_O

    I use Fedora 13 now

  • i have it on my netbbok but it's kind of slow and confusing... but i decided to put back the 10.04 LTs on my netbook bcs of when i close the netbook it wont go to the sleep mode.. but the fn + f1 works... i've ried another kernel or x.org setting nothing seems to work so i will reinstall...

  • Was the recording video flickering or the actual desktop? I assume the recording. Or at least I hope so D:

  • @crunchy3neo flickering was just on the recording.

  • the netbook (unity) interface does look interesting. I tried jolicloud in virtualbox and it's similar. that type of interface takes getting used to as it reminds me of those smartphones. On a 10 inch netbook screen I can see how it would be useful, but on a laptop that has a screen 14 inches and larger, a normal desktop UI seems to fit better i.m.h.o. as there's plenty of screen real estate to work with. It sucks that yours flickered like that, but atleast it ran decently on your laptop.

  • @experimental0000 yeah, I can't say that the Unity interface is great for larger screens, but it definitely ran better for me. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux Yes, I tried 10.04 and it was OK but the wireless didn't work at all. Fedora is awesome but again the wireless (rt3090) is the problem. I have tried Linux Mint too and I have the same problem - wireless drivers! Linux Mint Debian has the same problem. Now I have PCLinuxOS but I don't like it very much. Waiting for Fedora 14 to come out :D

  • @v1y1 hm. that card just looks problematic, sadly. It appears that there are drivers for 32-bit, but they're hit-or-miss at best.

  • Was not working for me unit i changed from kdm to gdm and cannot say i am overly impress with kde anymore as it seems to now perform worse on my hardware.

  • @jay817 really? I haven't spent much time in Kubuntu 10.10 yet, so I don't really know, but it looked ok in a VM

  • @thisweekinlinux My problem seems to only start after the machine has been running for some time, then the plasma widgets and task manager will start to slow down.

  • @jay817 good to know. I'll have to try it out on my laptop. :)

  • i just wish that global menu (i installed it in the desktop version) would work with all the apps .... it does not work with java and mono apps (in my case netbeans, eclipse, openoffice, monodevelop).... it also does not work wiith firefox ....

  • @sauron1grenoble yeah, it's just a matter of updating the apps themselves to make them work, and that takes a lot of time.

  • i cant install my drivers, the resolution gets weird, it worked well in 9.10 and 10.04 but is screwed up in 10.10

Also it didn't work with 2 monitors

  • @raket94 I can't remember, but I think you've got ATI, right?

Good to know that it didn't work with 2 monitors. I haven't had a chance to try that out yet. Of course it's intended for netbooks, and generally speaking netbooks are single-screen. I know if I wanted a second screen, I'd be using the desktop interface instead.

  • @thisweekinlinux Yes, i have ATI.

Actually i ment the regular desktop interface it couldn't recognize the monitors and i could select the correct resolution.

Also when i changed the primary monitor it didn't want to switch over and stuff like that.

Hopefully it will be fixed soon

  • @raket94 ah, understood. I'd be willing to bet that's an ATI-related issue. Are you using the open source or the proprietary driver?

  • @thisweekinlinux i'm using the proprietary driver.

Its works well with just one monitor now but it cant handle 2

wich is odd since it could do it in 10.04

  • .. but i don't really see the point with UNR being so resource hungry for the graphics card, they should do two things; save space, and save resources, the way i see it they doesn't do either very well. I think a normal Gnome desktop environment is more compatible with a netbook system, actually.

  • The flickering with the netbook interface is probably because it is new and recordmydesktop haven't optimized it yet for UNR enviroment

    Nice video. :)

  • @SmartestViking I figured as much. Thanks!> :)

  • you can also just download the netbook edition and you get the desktop whit it

  • When its clear that people like minimalistic interface, Why are they making an interface that occupies a lot of space. The screen of netbooks is already small..

  • @mohanr2222 well, the sidebar takes up less top-to-bottom space, and the rest of the interface kinda hides away when you're not using it. I kinda understand it, but when they completely disable the use of the rest of the desktop space, it makes no sense...

  • What application do you use to record your desktop and voice? I've tried recordmydesktop but I was unable to record my voice for I don't know what reason.

Thanks in advance and great video as usual! :)

  • @RedMasterBG I use gtk-recordmydesktop. Make sure your mic is working (try it in Sound Recorder or Audacity first). If it does, check the advanced settings of gtk-recordmydesktop and if the audio tab shows "DEFAULT" change it to "default" (or vice versa).

  • @thisweekinlinux It's working in these applications (Sound Recorder and Audacity). I'll try to change that option. Thanks for the help! :)

  • @RedMasterBG good luck! It's weird that case would make that big of a difference, but I've noticed that it does.

  • Going to try it atleast but I prefer to have a regular desktop edition on my netbook. Even with a res of 1024x600 I can manage it quite well.
