If you fence epee without wearing a cricket box to protect the family jewels, you're an idiot. I have seen someone carted off to hospital in an ambulance after being hit in the groin. It isn't a joke. Imagine being kicked by a lady going past on a motorbike at 60 mph who is wearing stilettoes. That is a close approximation to what being hit by an epee point is like. Be warned!

I'm doin foil now so I don't wear a cup cuz it don't hurt tht much with foil. My coach is moving me up to épée in a few weeks tho. Can't wait!!! After a while on épée he's letting us use blade!! Yay!!!

Not to knock the fencers or anything, but I've taken hits to the balls worse than that guy had- I know, it sucks, but you've gotta suck it up man. I don't think it would be so bad that you'd have to go into the fetal position and have a ref check you out xD I wasn't wearing a cup when I got hit, so I think I'd know something about pain there lol.

On a more constructive note, I find it very helpful for me to keep me free hand down in epee. When you have it up, it's a really obvious target.

I have been fencing for almost 5 yrs. I suggest to get lower in ur en garde, It helps u stay more mobile. Distance is key!

some people at competitions who do epee actually aim for your crotch with a fleche and if u don't wear protection it hurts like hell - ive seen many people get injured like this .

I have the same problem with my fencing socks as the right guy due to my immensly long leg-thingies. Not much action here, but very cool piste, I would love to try one of those out since my organisation uses a regular rubber-like floor with taped markings :P
