Urdu is a beautiful language. I am a Hindu/Sufi and I learnt Urdu at an early age from my neighbor Janaab Muharram Ali. When I hear or read comments that Urdu is not a daughter or sister language of Hindi, I feel very sad and disillusioned. All North Indian languages are a derivative of Sanskrit/Hindi. It happens that Urdu was created during the Muslim rule of india and the rulers identified with Farsi/Arabic scripts. You know what, it does not matter. I love Urdu, Hindi, English... Cheers !!

Nobody has sung Ghalib better than Jagjit. I dont know of a poet better than Ghalib. I love urdu, but it seems it is a dying language, at least in Pakistan. I hope that Ghalib's spell keeps it alive.

@1851990ful l I have been fa of ghalib for ages and i have sung this for myself @ many phases of life. This can interpretted in many many thousand ways. Ghalib's writing had a depth tat cant be easily assesed. But this is possibly most shallow picturizatn of such a msterpiece.. its sad , appraising the beauty has become so diffult dez days... the director must have alteast tied to understad the raw meaning of it. I love this ghazal a lot. one among the most favorite of mine. ghalib is unbeatable

what makes Urdu a great language is the inclusion of Farsi in it. About 40% of Urdu has Farsi and to lesser extent Arabic too. Farsi language is the best language to write poetry in that's why almost all old pakistani, indian, n turkish poets wrote most of their work in farsi including Ghalib too.

That is the beauty of urdu... that it has the most colorful and descriptive qualities of Farasi, depth in meaning of Arabic and combination of these two and other languages has made it one of the most refined creation of expression of life it self.

sorry but most of the words in urdue are dari, urdue took shape and was developed during the dgeli sutanat whos rulers were afghans and later on during the mughal empire again afghan in origin, any way i dont mean to brag it was just a correction,

btw i love urdue mainly couse of its poetry

Well I don't know about pk and turkey but in india almost all old literature is in Sanskrit as in Ved. Islam came later and with it some of the islam poets practiced their art in Urdu.Others practicing various sanskrit born native languages like Hindi.

an as far as I have studied the one of the main influence to Urdu too is Sanskrit.

I have thousands of wishes and i wish to die for fulfilment of every wish in my heart; many of my wishes have been fulfilled but still there many that remain unfulfilled. It is just a translation; i cant capture the beauty of original couplet.

i think a better translation would be "I have set a lot of goals, but they werent enough to fulfill my desires"

Let's not forget that Ghalib also said in a poem....Yeh masaail e tasawwuf yeh tera bayaan Ghalib!...Ke tujhe hum wali samajhte jo na baad a khawaar hota.....he said it because he was an alcoholic....so yes...he was a bad muslim...the philosophical aspect in his poems is amazing and profound....but that does not change the fact that he had ego issues and there is no such thing is a half muslim...you're either muslim or you're not....period...

While totally agreeing with your statement that he did consume wine, I believe that nowhere has it been stated in Scriptures that it makes a person non-Muslim. Appreciate the side of people they present you. Do Not peep too much into personal lives. And the second Misra of the Shair doesn't have "Ke" and it is Baada not baad a, it is Khwar and not Khawar. It destroys the wazan.
