Oh please... no way is this the bass player for Jeff Beck... in fact this isn't even a bass player! This an over rated show pony who really would be much more suited to the likes of Lady Gaga. Tal Wilkenfeld was "the perfect bassist" for Jeff Beck.
A couple of young ladies to also try out which play some covers and there fun are BassGirl5809 she's sorta new but plays nice and also CrankUpTheAmps has been playing for awhile. There's no slap bass just good bass playing on songs they have learned. Give it a try. I've liked the channels. Remember, they've only been playing for a while. A couple to three yrs maybe.
Jeff Beck feels so out of place when the camera goes back to him a couple times. I've seen many of Tal's performances with Beck and she's WAY better suited for Jeff Beck. She's grooves with Jeff style better. I like Rhonda's style only because it's very percussive, drum sounding, yet I'm not feelin the notes with Rhonda. It's more show. Jeff isn't raising his hands up naturally for enjoyment like he did with Tal's Jazzy style. There was music chemistry between Jeff and Tal.
i prefer listening to Tal Wilkinfield; her playing doesn't seem 2 be as predicated on chops/technique (though, i'm sure she's got tons) as Rhonda Smith's. clearly, Beck heard something in both players, so it should be clear this isn't a statement on their relative abilities. just my personal preference. listening to either would give a person plenty 2 practice.
You guys are a bunch of sexist dicks. See a woman player, you automatically have to compare her to other female players as if they(women) are in a musical world by themselves. ANY musician who plays well enough to be in a band with Jeff Beck deserves a certain amount of respect, male or female. Besides, if you spent more time practicing and less time bagging on peoples youtube performances, you might all be better players. Go practice and then post your own videos if you know so much.
@ypteacher Hold on. not all men think like this. As you said you have to know what you are doing to be hired by Jeff Beck. However, you have to also realize that he is STILL A MAN, and he is essentially funded by corporations (MUSIC INDUSTRY), which are ESSENTIALLY MYSGONIST, who want women to look a certain way on stage although you have women who play better than CLARK, WOOTEN OR EVEN LES CLAYPOOL but does not have "THE LOOK". Sadly for women she have to be "sexier" than talent.
there she goes again with the old slappin again for fuck sake play something technical instead of that 80s shit. all her vids she does the same shit. i agree tal is much more technical and fluent in her style.
I'm sure Tal is much better. I will say this I'll take Rhonda over what's her name? That currently plays for Prince. I bet outta all the players if Sonny T would of had the chance he woulda hung in there with Jeff. But Sonny ain't got no skirt or pretty eye lashes.
@plangentmusic,Do you really know what mediocre is? Rhonda Smith is probably one of the best female bassist there is. What she did may have seemed a little out of place in this particular video, but the lady is nothing less that exceptional!. Someone also wrote that she's not on the level of Tal Wakenfield,I say to them stop dreaming Rhonda Smith will wear Tal Waklfied out hands downs, but everyone has their own opinion.BTW do you play bass or do you just watch?
@grayhairandblueeyes,your statment about slapping and popping is so asinine it pathetic.just becasue YOU don't know how do it doesn't mean its not worthy! Slapping and popping is the only technique that has come along that's changed the concept of bass playing! Apparently you've never heard of Stanley clarke ,Marcus Miller,Victor Wooten or Larry Graham. And yes slapping and popping does require a certain tecnical excellence!! Please research BEFORE you speak. When it comes to Rhonda,I say Tal Who
@gleventhal Did you see that I wrote "IMHO" at the end of my comment? In case you don't know, IMHO means In My Honest Opinion. Your opinion may vary, and that's just fine.
@metalhead9838772 I know what it means, though I thought H stood for humble, not honest, but either way, I simply am disagreeing with you, we both have opinions, and I am not saying yours is not valid, just expressing mine in addition.
@metalhead9838772 Tal has 1/10 the experience at best and moves me 10x more than Rhonda...but its an opinion. I CANT WAIT till Tal puts out another album of her own.
I play bass and belive there really is no place for slap and poping it's like watching a car wreck sure it gets attension but as we see here it just doesn't work well no matter who the talent behind the bass is. Jeff should have known better for all his years. And yes for her years Tai is outstanding...
seems to be 2 sides... a Tal side and a Rhonda side....seems to be a lot of criticism too...I think given Jeff's talent and longevity he would know who he wants backing him and that's why he has Rhonda now
@ricky77able......well,,Jeff Beck seems to dig her,,as does Prince..I think the "phone sound" doesn t do justice to her solo in this case.True Tai is more melodic in her approach...
@ricky771able And bass guitars should not sound like this,it sounds like 2 tins being rubbed together, where's the depth, the tone,it's not there sounds awaful and i'm sorry but she has no talent compared to tal
Cute lady, really into her bass. First half she sorta sounds like she wanted to sound like drums to me from her tempo. No low end on her bass. It's more mid, which is fine. Jeff seems really shy and out off place with her in this section. He is a more relaxed, to build up intense and back to relaxed playing depending on song. Great slap bass thou. Sorry, but Tal is more soothing on solos : )
Jeff looks lost without tal, this bass player is good in her own unique way but tal is much much more suited to jeff, hjeff iasn't even smiling like he does with tal
@ricky771able and she's more of a show off than tal,tal is very innocent about how she plays.almost naive but so humble, this woman is there for the glory and nothing else
@ricky771able hey hey now, we all have our own stage characters. Not saying I dig this chick's anymore or less than Tal's, but what we all do on stage is just what we do on stage. Most bass players usually get over-the-top when we do solos live haha. It's about the fun of it, I think. But not gonna lie...this chick's rhythmic solo thing is getting old already lol
Gimme a break..she's all about sound effects..and making faces more than any bass player I've ever watched...C'mon Jeff...Get Vinnie and Tal back...and quick...
Tal and Rhonda are different bass players. What alot of folks miss when playing bass in this style it becomes a precussion instrument as well as a string instrument. Marcus Miller has the chops for both worlds as a melodic player and a thumper. Both Tal and Rhonda are both fantastic players and add a different flavor to Beck's music who by the way is a very under rated guitarist in my opinion. Anyway , Rhonda is just amazing in this clip. Her chops are just off the chain !
For some reason Europeans respect black american music more than american whites seem to. They are honest about rock's origins and are not intimidated by talent from any gender or race. Thats why Jimi conquered the UK before the USA.
A bass player who can play funk from an R&B point of view adds something special to rock music. kinda the way Billy Preston on organ and keys enhanced the Beatles with his Gospel music background.
@markthode I agree so far from the utube vid clips. I'm only seeing Rhondas solos on repeat, and not the Band songs. So far from what I've seen Jeff seems out of place with Rhonda, (in the solos anyway; he is not as happy or raising his arms in joy, like with Tal he does. Rhonda has a great style of her own, yet I need to see the chemistry on Jeffs songs if there's vids for them with Rhonda. Good day!
It is amazing how some folks can be so critical of a musician on the road, playing live,in front of sold out venues, while they sit at home on break from their job flipping burgers!!! Get a clue and a life!!!!!
@blue9z Well said. The solo was neat to hear though. Tal is more soothing to listen to and it seems she can play for ever. She is really going to be remembered.
