Yah, my grandparents live 30 seconds from a railroad track and passenger trains are frequent. So, when we were waiting for a train to come, an Amtrak blows through there, rocking the car.
the K5LA on this video sounds great on cabcar 6951. It might have been the train wash at San Diego Santa Fe Depot Station that helped it sound clear and loud.
Amtrak southbound 796 the pacific surfliner that goes from San Luis Obispo to San Diego, the engineer is always like lying down on the horn button through El Capitan Beach CA.
Why do american drivers always really ride the horn, it must make living near the track insufferable. I'm a spotter in the UK, and i'm lucky to even get 2 tone's from a Class 43, let alone anything else. Anyone thanks for the post.
"90 MPH speed limit through here, most Amtraks make every bit of it too."
Yet I see trackside signals, which are not permitted for trains going 80 mph or faster (the engineer can't see them clearly enough). Are they used by slower moving freight trains?
They're permitted... Heck, the 150 MPH Northeast Corridor has wayside signals! What is required to surpass 79 MPH is an automatic train control system working in tandem with the signalling system. In the case of the Surfline, a large swath of the San Diego sub is equipped with Automatic Train Stop, allowing it to exceed 79 MPH. That said trains cannot exceed 90 MPH unless they are equipped with in-cab signals, which the Surfline does not have (yet), bet even then we'd still have wayside signals
Wanted to add that if properly equipped with Cab Signalling, and rails maintained to the proper specification, the Surfliners were designed to operate at up to 110 MPH. The hope is one day to shut the NIMBYs up and upgrade the line between Laguna Niguel and Santa Ana for 110 MPH operation.

Why there and not anywhere else?

What do you mean?
Amtrakify 2 years ago
Why in El Capitan Beach specifically?
deidelson 2 years ago
I've been there in the summer and in the fall to see concerts and go camping and I've always heard Amtrak #796 do that when it goes through there.

796 goes from Goleta to San Diego. I wonder why 796 specifically and not any other train. Are there a lot of crossings there?
deidelson 2 years ago
There aren't very many crossings there but 796 engineer is a horn blower. Haven't you noticed?
Amtrakify 2 years ago
No becuse I live in San Diego and 796 comes through in the middle of the night. That would be fun if I could head out late and catch it though.
deidelson 2 years ago
Yeah, It would be cool if I could go out and look at
a train in the middle of the night. I'm 12 as well
