  • May Got a Jinty Nice One :-D

  • 5:20 you see Thomas the tank-engine!

  • Hes got a point most men are fags nowadays with their skinny jeans and hair, man up you flanges

  • 13 people lost the biding

  • I'll never understand collectors.

  • I would have still kept the boxes, but run the train all the same :)

  • 2:14 that train has suspension :o

  • 13 people are sad collectors!

  • I have a tryange blue Pullman that I rented to a mate to help him get going agen

  • I'm with James whats the point in buying a train set and never running it

  • @MrLiamp78 I agree, but I'd still keep the box. XD

  • i love him even more!!

  • Can someone please tell me what the tune at the start is (The Train Train one)

  • @wesmatron Ah...Slow Train by Lemon Jelly

  • SAD BASTERD! 5:35

  • thats why i love being a boy/man now coz im 15 i dont have to grow up abit like james :)

  • 13 people are collectors!

  • pete watermans company is called 'jltrt' (just like the real thing)

  • Hahaha look at that window licking kid @ 5:01

  • And in that spirit, I drive my classic '65 mustang convertible to work every single day. Beats trailering it to shows...

  • @gheefreak yeah I know! But nohomo...

  • i collect and run my locomotives. and guess what? im 13!

  • getting a huge layout like mine (four 5' by 2' tables) to work is a complete and utter b***, it looses current halfway round, one solution is to soulder speaker wire every couple of inches and hook it all up to a dcc controller (of course a with all hobbies this hasnt happened since you never finish the damn thing lol)but when it works it brilliant, these are the beest toys ever :)

  • @tiger0tank check your rail connectors, if they are loose or oxidized, they won't transfer current, but as you mentioned soldering bus wires evey section is also good. i do that for large sections too. keep it up!

  • Run the things!!

  • When I get a new train or something, as soon as I get home I build a small temporary track, then run the new engine for ages, then I put it back in the box so it don't get scratched, I don't really collect things, if I did, I would use them, but keep the box, it may come in handy later.

  • I swear, I could watch him pull the whistle and giggle for days. It's just so adorable.

  • what is the blue train called that james was driving it is very nice

  • @ciarang8235 tri-ang's blue pullman its discontinued

  • @ciarang8235 that would be the ORIGINAL blue pullman

  • is that the same Peter Waterman who hornby named a collection after?

  • @MrTrainboy1 yep

  • i think James makes a better stoker than Jeremy Clarkson!

  • 13 people never got a train set for Christmas.

  • Lol

  • I had a heart attack when he asked for the bin to throw the box away!

  • @jn4195 COLLECTOR!!!

  • @themymysteryman101 You know it :)

  • @jn4195 you big nerd

  • Comment removed

  • @jn4195 That made my jaw drop!

  • @jn4195 which part and why?

  • is that the watercress line

  • That's totally me. I can imagine myself at 40 and jumping with excitement at the prospect of getting to see a large train set.

  • I have something I think from 1930! That time made by Germens not going in hands of collectors but I will get stuff of collectors!

  • I envy Sarah Frater! XD

  • And thats why mans are most beautifull creatures in the world :-)

  • I don't know many collecters here in the US, but if I met one I'd try everything I could to buy an engine off of them and take it for a spin. Trains are meant to MOVE man!

  • What's the fun in just looking at them? They NEED to be run at least ONCE in their life.

  • i love that, at a collector's auction he immediately through the box away! their meant to be played with so play with them! :)

  • LOL the guy in the glasses is one of our lecturers at uni!

  • Happy Birthday, James! :)

  • So was this before or after the Veyron? XD

  • WHAT THE HELL, I'M 14 AND I STILL PLAY WITH TRAINS!!!!! I luv model trains and Airfix kits over video games.

  • @Giselle76502 I'm thirteen, going on fourteen, I prefer video games. BUT, model trains are just too awesome to sell. Unless they're damaged or you've got a clone of it.

  • It amazes me how some people can buy something new and then never use it for it's intended purpose. Would those same people buy a new car and have it delivered to their home to sit in the garage for 20 years and never start it or drive it? Just look at it?

  • @faulcon1 - some people do, but you'd have to have more money than sense.

  • @JBofBrisbane What, I'd have to have more money then sense?

  • lol at 4:58 there's a horny perci

  • See even his cat sees the fun of it all 7:32 ;).

  • I don't get people who collect some items just to let them sit there basically dust collecting. That is so pointless.

My dad has been going on a few times about setting his layouts up when he finally retires. He's also been going a bit crazy at times and getting more trains. He bought a couple for my nephew but I think they're actually for him.

I've heard stories of how when my brothers were small they would play with my dad's trains and just crash them into each other like Gomez Addams.

  • 12 women watched this video!

  • @stonerscolony Yeah they're probably the ones jealous of the women at the end ;).

  • I'm Quite happy to run a Eurostar next to the Flying Scotsman. But my grandad says I can do it so long as the Scotsman comes first LOL.

  • Pete Waterman's company is "Just like the Real Thing" - they primarily make O gauge kits - often because they are models that Pete needs for his own layout!

  • 12 people are killjoy collectors

  • what model train company does Pete Waterman own is it Bassett-lowke

  • they were made to be played with, not stared at.

  • @Wandering1500 I agree totally!

  • @Wandering1500 steard at while being played with

  • 12 people have no hobby

  • I need to get mine out again.

  • ttte percy on the layout with hogwarts express

  • so am i. though i prefer lionel, ihc, bachmann, Broadway limited, and usa trains but stll

  • Great stuff, toy trains are for playing with, not as an investment, these sort of greedy people just over inflate the prices and stop a lot of not so well off guys who like to play trains as a hobby, its good therapy like any other game, golf, football.

Some prices for second hand vintage trains are obscene.

Most model trains are made in China these days from plastic, and over priced its not the same feel as the original diecast or tin train manufactures stuff.

  • That could take an hour of shunting......excellent!

  • I love this video. I buy all my trains on Ebay and I don't care if they have a box or not.

  • i buy a train, keep its packaging for good reasons like storing , moveing..ect, and they allways will get a good run, neraly every day, i dont like people who get them, never play with them, and be werid becouse they got them!, james may knows!

  • @itgamer100 I keep the boxs 2, but as James says, thier suposed to be played with, so I'm gonna go, out bit evryone, and run a train on my railway : D

  • That just made me take out my ho amtrack train, and make it go fast! lol

  • "That could take an hour of shunting... Excellent!" Gotta love James May :)

  • i am a grubby collector and my train collection is protected with an AK-47.

  • @elfchimp i protect mine with a m61a1 20mm vulcan :)

  • Haha, I'm with James- screw the collectors and their cobweb filled closets. . .

I was at a hobbyshop yesterday and got a 15 year old HO slot car new in the package. Sure I coulda kept it and looked at it forever, or throw it on ebay, but HELL NO! I cut that package open and PLAYED WITH IT!!! Worked like new!!! >:D

  • @BlueFox284 I agree!!

  • Ive got one in the loft im building for the kids - been set up now for 12 months and they still havent been allowed to touch it!

  • barry fentiman a fag seriously

  • I warms my heart to see grown men enjoying themselves like young kids :)

  • They never grow up....Yes B... we man are big kids and we love it. get used to it.

  • i will keap my collection until i die

and if your going to collect model trains and not run them then at least build a diorama

  • I'm a girl and I am fascinated by toy trains!!! ;D

  • @VingraciaClaire

    damn ! u sure.. ? :-P hehe

  • @Alorrana Yep! :D Especially those with intricate details. Barbies can't be compared with them, at all. :)

  • @VingraciaClaire

    grin.. good answer :)

    cheers.

  • Sorry to burst your bubble boys: I'm 40 years old, mother of four, and I PLAY WITH TRAINS. We used to have *a* room for the trains, but it got to crowded; so now I've taken over the dining room as well! (Can't take over the living room - I need that space to put together buildings and foliage).

  • Dunno why people have a stupid obbsesion on keeping the packaging, the train is the main thing lol :p

  • @tomhughestrainz i know, most people keep them in case they got to put it away

  • @itgamer100 if anything where all like James, We use hornby for enjoyment :)

  • @tomhughestrainz i argre! :)

  • @tomhughestrainz lol iv only kept the packaging for 80% of my hornby because its stored in my dads loft atm :( i miss playing with it.

  • @slymills keeping the packaging's alright, but the main thing is you play wid them, That guy never wanted to run them, bad really.

  • @tomhughestrainz True very True, im hoping to get it set onto a board in the next few months. :D i dont understand why you buy something and never use it? so what if it makes you loads of money in the future.... you'll be dead!! lol

  • i will love hornby trains for life!:)

  • lol love James May. Trains are meant to be played with not left in their box gathering dust. =D

  • would you actually have a mortgage if you were a presenter in top gear?

  • my first train set was the "Smokey Joe" train set from hornby when i was about seven

  • I used to have an early design of a bullet train along with a virgin train. they dissapeared

  • I WANT ONE SO BAD

i never got one when i was little :(

  • I remember my first Train Set as 9-10 year old on Christmas day and I loved it so much. One day I will get another large set and will enjoy the experience just like a child all over again!!!

  • Im a woman and even i think train sets are interesting , those women were abit shallow :-\

  • Hornby invented Meccano too? Wow.

  • Now if he wanted to really torque the collectors, have the girls throw the box away and shove the trains in your pockets while they are standing there waiting to get their trophies!!!

  • 12 people hate trains D:

  • James may is brilliant. He could talk about anything and make it interesting.

  • @GrubyTolek i agree

  • Blue Pullman lovly one i own my grandads in its origional box ans yes it is well used had to be overhauled last month , i also own hornby dublo yet again well used, basically james may is wrong you keep the box keep them int he box but use them

  • Now that I saw this I'm going to go play with my 4-8-8-4 Big Boy some more, such an expensive but addicting hobby Model Railroader for life

  • Comment removed

  • Although I drive all my trains regularly I would never throw any of the boxes away.

  • im a kid and i play with hornby. basically ive just proved james may wrong

  • Lol, I can't believe James tossed the packaging away.

  • great i have a full size set up

  • haha, gotta love that smirk at the camera when he outbids everyone.

  • i love james may, hes awesome. perfect job, and hes like a normal man!

  • you know what he would like wunderland! worlds biggest most realistic toy train layout!

  • watching this video makes playing with trains more fun! i'm not going to store mine away in their boxes! i'm only going to put my worn down ones on a display case! model trains are very fun to play with! if you buy them to just look at them in storage then why don't you but a magazine and look at pictures of them instead?!?

  • brilliant! great stuff from James haha. aren't we all just that 7 year old at heart? i always loved playing with toys and especially trains and i still do!! haha great upload :)

  • I think im going to go out and buy a trainset tomorrow...

  • j-i-n-g-l-e bells!

  • LOLOL "and enough excitement to make an 8 year old boy....faint"

  • I'm a 37 yo kid.. I play computergames, I play with airsoft guns, I go out to the woods for a one-night hike... I love playing.. I need to play after a hard day at work..

  • They ARE the most romantic transportation ever. :)

  • oh I love this ..... let me see more please..... trains are not just for the boys!

  • James, your my childhood. The Michael Jackson type, the guy that never grew up (without the weirdness), Rock on May.

  • I love my train set. :)

  • @AprilMcDermott1990 yeah me too !!! there so much fun

  • james may is an awesome presenter, he can make me interested in a subject that i never really had much interest in. now i love trains.

  • The woman on james left is his partner Sarah Frater...

  • I am gonna go play with my trains :)

  • its sad to hear that his scottsman died in that world record attempt :(

  • Comment removed

  • @trainlover657 - yeh, but I bet he either got it repaired free of charge, or got a brand new one FOC !! lol

  • It's almost as if 'collectors' have some sort of OCD about original condition. As if the trains must be in the same condition as they were produced. Im not saying trains should be beat up and their paint chipped away, but at least set the trains on rails with an actual 12V current running through them!

  • same thing goes for cars! why just keep the car clean and in mint condition?

    drive it to the ground!

  • i think that it is sad keepting a toy you should just wear it out like i do with all my scaletrix

  • whats the point of haveing a model train, boat, car, etc. & never useing it it should be used caerfully & boxed when stored.

  • I had a top layout when i was a kid but sold it for £300 so could buy a car, what a dick!!!!

But I've just bought my 6 year old son one for Xmas and now he wants to build a massive track as he calls it, we're gonna have fun hehe

  • hope i am fortunate enough to have a son with the same interest!

  • pass test just hi there james what was it like flying the tornado?

  • It like James is sticking a big middle finger to model collectors. =D

  • crap video quality ? at the top of the screen type in &fmt=18

  • Crap video quality

  • The most appealing thing about these toy series he does is that you get the sense he's using his powers as an adult to fulfil all of his wishes when he was a boy.

  • Modeltrains were my biggest passion untill i was about 13, when i found out about girls XD

  • @Hanske90 haha! one thing i can say about a model train that i can't say about girls: i'm in control of them.

  • @fallingup90 And they never cheat on you :-)

  • @Hanske90 haha. your model train wouldn't get jealous if you buy another train

  • sad that some don't even come out of the package. I havn't used mine in a solid year and am itching to ship it over to germany and get it set up at my dads house for christmas. And at rinjingan, im 15, and I have the track and trains for a pretty sweet layout.

  • A Model railway is not a toy, it is a train that you can own. You are it`s boss you control it. I have diesels in my collection and steam locomotives and I`m 52 years old.

  • it is a serious hobby, its not just a toy, if you were to buy a toy get ones that will work for about a week and are made of plastic that you get at the dollar store for a buck

  • watching this makes me wish i took care of my 120 piece Bachman set i got on my 7th x-mas...ill own another someday : )

  • my wife still dose not know that i have a full size train set ... already set up in the loft .. she cant clime the loft ladder ...

  • lol

  • @tango909

    Now thats Funny!

  • @tango909

    harharhar, that is just hilarious

  • @tango909 i suggest u use that to ur full advantage, lol

  • @tango909 wich scale do you use?

  • May is a hero.
