Honestly, Smith was EXTREMELY lucky. He caught the plexi with his shoulder. Had he been hit just a split second earlier, his face would've taken that massive hit. (It's happened before and it's never pretty)

The only illegal part of the hit, is the angle. Johnson hits Smyth from the back half of the body. Other than that, it's a legal shot on Smyth. He's just really unfortunate.

A lot of players in the NHL would've done the same thing as Johnson, also a lot of them would've given some pause and not carried out the hit the way JJ did...
