  • I love how everything is so beautifully timed to the music. Not just the clicks to the beat but the slides to the strings like 3:29. Masterful.

  • I wish I were this graceful on roller skates *falls down*

  • Anyone know what the glint was around 4:18?

  • I wish all couples fights would break into song and dance...

  • haha yeah same that would be awesome

  • My grandmother could do this. =) She would have been a Rockette except she was too short. Her skills got her through auditions; her height put her out.

  • I don't think there was anything Astaire and Rogers couldn't do... I swear if you asked them to dance on skis they could have done it!

  • This is such a good clip

  • they're fabulous!

  • love love this song, Ginger's facial expressions are so cute! (^-^)V

  • Both did a great job on skates which had to be so difficult. especially when they hit the grass afterwards. both look great together!

  • Charlene Tilton starred in a pantomime last year and she sang this as a duet with another actor. I didn't know this was a real song!!

  • I Love this movie :) is actually gorgeous lol and i secretly love fred astaire...

  • they make it look so easy!!! such leagends!!! xxx

  • okay who was better on roller skates fred astaire or gene kelly

  • fred

  • Gene--and believe me, I'm crazy about Fred Astaire!

  • Skating like that and practicing as mcuh as they did would have to kill you feet after awhile because you know damn well those skates weren't comfortable. But, they both look amazing.

  • I like Petrov better when he sings ^^

  • uhm what is this from? hehe sorry jw.

  • i think it s from Shall We Dance -

    lol

they made so many movies together sometimese i get confused!! ;)

  • yah!! lol thanksssa!!

  • oh god, this is fun!

  • my favourite pairing of all time : )

  • I love them:) Unforgettable Amazing couple!

  • they're so damn elegant

  • Couldn't agree with you more.

  • you responded to my comment....but i cant find what i said...! T_T

  • you said they are so damn elegant

  • which one coming from england?

  • glad sum1 agrees... whoever u may b, lol ;p

  • i love this... it makes me want to have been born ages ago... :( oh well... its still just lovely =)

  • totally agree fififlea... whoever u r... xP wanna hav been born in d 40s... =/

  • Yeah 'cause things were just swell back then. Rife racism, sexism, homophobia... sounds awesome... IF you're a white rich male between the ages of 21 and 65 :P

  • Cos nowadays things are SO much better... Wars, the economic crisis, people trying to what they're not, children growing up too fast, women trying to stay young... Woooooow, 2008 kicks ass... ~_~'

  • suppose you were born in the 40s, you would be too young for the Astaire&Rogers time))) better have been born in the 20s

  • oh well sometime around those times is good... :)

  • good one... u made me rotflmao =)

  • we did this in hooray for holliwood, a play

  • They have good wit!

  • 好棒好棒!

  • They make dancing on skates look so easy! I want to get out there, but know I'll just bust my head open. lol

  • lma0o & its "one day" luie !!

    muahahaha

  • something must be done...fine if you like one day and i like one days ill say one day and give up one days so lets call the calling off-off... Let's call the whole thing off

  • by the way this goes out to Sabrina, "one days"!!!=P

  • wish i was born in those days...or do i mean these days(scratches head) screw it i call the whole thing off!

  • As elegant as ice-skating.

  • For me, the most amazing thing about this video is that the entire roller skate dance sequence—every bit from when they sit clacking their skates to when they flop down on the grass—is done in one single take. No cuts—no cheating. They had to do that entire sequence perfect from start to finish, and I would love to know just how much rehearsal and how many takes it took them to get it right.

  • Actually, there is one small cut, but yeah, for the most part. Love Fred and Ginger. They worked hard, and it pays off.

  • well, they both come from the theatre world anyway... and there are no second shot in theatre

but for sure it must have taken weeks of practice ;)

  • One word AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • These are real actors

  • Nobody danced like Fred & Ginger... Poetry in motion, really a joy to watch, not just when they danced, buy also watching them act. Really fun to watch!!!!

  • I love this. It was so cute at 4:19 when they "pretend" to lose their balance.

  • Is there anything that Fred Astaire couldn't do? I mean seriously...wow!! O_O

  • i love theese old songs

  • lol i love this song :) classic i sang this in one of my school productions

  • what is this movie? anyone can tell me?

  • I think it is "shall we dance"

  • Shall we dance...really great classic

  • im little sister is 9 and she lovves these movies and she also lovves the dike van dyke show too.

  • we was talking about this in history class because were doing like old movies and stuff its so funny

  • love the skates...they are so old school...

we ain't gonna find these sort of moves nowadays..

  • he's pretty good for some one who hasn't skated since he was a kid.

  • And not to be outdone, then Gene Kelley goes to do a movie where he dances on roller skates... haha

  • the guys who say that their time was the best are right!!!i mean...the classics are the best songs!!!you cant beat the classics!!!

  • we sing this song in choir! well its for the special people who can sing and this is one of our favorites! great song and great movie! ♥

  • PepsiPrime, thanks for posting this video is adorable :D

  • How would one spell the alternate version of oysters?

  • ersters

  • I don't kwnow why there's a lot of people thinking that best times were their times. I think that every time and epoch has their own great things as well as worst things! Let's not be chauvinistics!!

  • Maybe so, but look at the crap we have to put up with these days...

I'm from the 70's but I think the 30's-40's were the best...

  • we listen to this song at school, in English! I love the song and Fred Astaire:)

  • Ginger I Love You... 4ever

  • Fred & Ginger were always a lovely couple! This song is adorable :)

  • Then why did you watch it?

All the great stuff was before 1960, geez.

  • not ALL the great but yes very great heppened before 1960.

  • what about modern jazz such as adam holzman or even the early jazz masters who recorded after 1960 such as Sinatra, Simone, Fitzgerald and prima?

  • Weird, because I don't like anything after the 1960's. In fact, I don't even like the 1960's! I agree with yourbliss888, all the great stuff DID happen before 1960!

  • what about the beatles, the rolling stones, jimi hendrix, dire straits, pink floyd, the police, eric clapton, john lennon, george harrison, paul maccartney, bob dylan, simon & garfunkel, bruce springsteen, bill withers, bb king, david bowie, elton john, mark knopfler, sting, paul weller, elvis costello, cast, thin lizzy, the who, prince, scorpions, lynrd skynrd, led zepplin and u2? are you saying that they're no good?

  • I'm not saying that they're 'no good', but I personally don't like them. You listed very popular bands, and they are popular because obviously they play good music. But that's just not my music taste. I don't like The Beatles, or Elvis, or The Rolling Stones. Does this mean they're no good? No, not at all, it just means I personally don't like their style.

  • You say "Pattaya", I say "Pattaya"....

  • madonna seemed to have insparation from this for her confession on the dance floor show with rollerskaters dancing on stage ,it,s not new but it was like how fred en ginger did it and Madonna likes to watch them too!

  • I can write for you any sheet music

  • Can you do this one?

  • ginger certainly was a beautiful woman

  • I love this! And since I am terrible at dancing, skating, AND singing, I especially admire their ability to do all three! LOL

  • wow roller-tap! wicked!!

  • Ginger wasn,t especially the best dance partner of Fred but sure the funniest! She could have sarcasme in her voice an face, that,s crack you up.watch for instance Top Hat if you have the change, fun fun fun

  • They are so cute in this scene:)

  • Only these two...no one else!

    Complete definition of the BEST!

  • I love this Song and even more the dancing part hahaha ..its sooo awesome man ..just the best fuck the rest :P

  • I love this scene!!!! I've been reading Ginger Rogers' Biography. She's my role model! hehe! = )

  • If I had the chance to be reborn, I would be happy to be Fred Astaire.

  • If I had the chance to be reborn into the past, I would be happy dancing with Fred Astaire!! :)

  • Tapping with roller-skating...

It's playful, and yet sophisticated dance.

    Wonderful!

  • I love this song! It's so, well, it's so good I can't describe it!

  • i love this film, and this scene is so much fun ! xxxx

  • I've seen this scene many times but it remains amazing! I think 'Shall we Dance' is their best movie *the Gershwin music is also lovely* - I was totally wowed after seeing it :)

  • Masterpiece!

    Thanks for putting this up!

  • I had totally forgotten that Gene Kelly was not the first to tap dance in roller skates! We are all influenced by those we admire.

  • the first time I saw this I said this is where the song came form so cute and what grat chemisty they had! HANDS DOWN EVERYBODY SHOULD WATCH THIS! AWESOME

  • Lmao-the fall's at the end's great.

Gosh Astaire was so amazing. I can't even stand in skates.

  • This is greattt..Love the movie !!!

  • love this movie and dance. it looks kinda painful at the end tho... thanks for the vid.!!!!! one of my favorite dances ever!!

  • i AM SPEECHLESS , THIS IS SOOOOO GREAT

  • Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers were two of the finest actors of their time, and had the best chemistry of any time.

  • yay i finally found it! thanks loads for putting this up!!

  • For ages I only knew the first verse but now I can sing it to my heart's content. Thanks for this video!

  • I can imagine when Ginger first heard they were going to dance on skates. "WHAT?!? You're really out to kill me this time, aren't you, Fred?!?"

They really created some incredible and memorable scenes together. God bless 'em!

  • Love this movie!!! Thank you soooo much!

  • I love Gershwin's songs.

& after watching this video, I officially love his songs even more!

  • A great Gershwin classic song...and Fred and Ginger sing a witty duet. Fred's rendition is as classic as the song they both introduced to the American songbook. At this point, in their collaboration their synergy is a wonder of human nature...It doesn't matter one iota that neither are great skaters...The spirit of fun and humanity imbues their whole performance. I suppose, it's possible to get better than this in the musical genre, but not by much! We are viewing two genuine professionals.

  • what is this movie called? ;l)

  • Shall We Dance

  • I love his face when she says, "Ershters."

  • i didn't know there was another way to pronounce "oyster"!

  • I think you have to be from Brooklyn to say "erster". : )

  • Woah - tap dancing on roller skates - that cannot be easy!

  • And all the dance in just two takes. No mistakes allowed.

  • It actually took them about 150 takes, but that just shows how dedicated they were to make this number outstanding.

  • Sorry, my English is sooo bad. With "in just 2 takes" i mean that there are no cuts. If they make a mistake, they start again from the begining.

150 takes, I admire them even more. :O

  • hahaha zomg forward crossovers and spiral sequences on skates! (x

I should try them on land someday!

  • i love old films like these

i just love black and white ones

  • Shall We Dance. This is my favorite Fred & Ginger film. The music, the comedy, the dancing. It has everything. It's perfect. They repeated this skating scene so many times that their feet got all bloody when they removed their skates.

  • Ah the old days....nice, I never watch this before. New age will never fancy this but I do, I'm 21 this year ;)

  • That's why we need to train the kiddies while they are young to watch movies of all time periods. And this movie is wonderful. I love IT! I'm 28 :)

  • Terrific1 Bravo! LMAO when they fall at the end. Even tho I know it's coming, I still laugh (loff) every time.

  • I agree with your entire comment! I love the end of this clip when they fall. The whole thing is so good, though.

I get a little sad whenever I watch these old movies/clips of old movies...makes me wish I could have been around for some of those golden days...

Wonderful to have YouTube so I can see a little of this great vintage film era whenever I am at the computer. : )

  • This song is great, I love it! Thanks for posting!

    -A sister in Christ, Mollie

  • Coming from you, that statement doesn't surprise me.

  • They're so charming, I really love them. Fred and Ginger forever :)

  • I need to know what kind of english Ginger language talk in this movie...

  • I love how when they hit the last hard tap when there sitting she hits hers and corsses her legs, and he wants to make the same move but instead kicks his out because he's a guy, idk why, but i like it. The ending is great because you think it's going to happen but your not sure and you don't believe it until it really happens! haha.

  • good! this song is so funny! thx 4 uploadin it!

  • I know people who seem to know this song when they've never heard it before.

  • It's because homage has been paid to this clip since it was made, and it's still referenced subtley in todays Society.

  • I suppose that it's a little bit like the North-South divide in the UK and many other countries. You say bath and I say barth, that sort of thing.

  • Fred looks a little more comfortable on wheels than Ginger ... but they're both fantastic!! that canNOT have been easy!!!

    bravo!

  • I LOVE this clip from the movie. I just love Fred Astaire he is amazing.

  • Everyone can relate to this!!! Fred is such a stud.... :)

Ginger is such a little brat but soo sassy... I love her!!!! Love this clip!

    Thanks for posting PepsiPrime :)

  • When I was a kid, I had a pair of metal skates like these, and they weren't anywhere near as smooth or maneuverable as anything with rubber or plastic wheels. However difficult this number would be to pull off now, it had to be twice as hard back then.

  • would be easy now.

  • Cute.

  • Well, now we know where Madonna got her image.

  • "vanilla, vanella, chocolate, STRAWBERRY!" yeah thats my favorite part, we're also singing this in show choir and it is amazing! i also love how at the beginning the stunk at roller skating and now they are amazing...

  • Maybe it's the way you're singing it that makes it "gay".

This song is really not that bad.

  • What movie is this from?

  • shall we dance

  • does anyone know what he says in 0.40;

"I guess it would look kind of funny if we ***** our marriage now, would it?"

please, i need this for my school work! ^^

  • denied

  • tnx! ^^

  • I Think He Says "Denied" :)

  • cool

  • yeah i thnk it's AWESOME!! ;)

you know, these days, nobody would really be able to do such things...

    I admire those old fellas

  • Just makes you smile doesn't it? Wonderful.

  • movie stars were so much more talented back then

  • Someone, I forget who, once said: "People say Fred Astaire was a great dancer, but don't forger Ginger Rodgers did everything he did backwards and in high heels."

  • I love that one (I heard it slightly differently, but same gist).

  • Man movies were so classy back then. I can't imagine how many times those two must've busted their asses practicing that routine, back in the day actors WORKED for their paycheck. My hats off to the old times.

  • I love this number and they handle it beautifully. Any unsteadiness observed by people on Gingers part (and even Fred though he waves his hands about so much u dont notice) doesn't matter. They are having fun and Ginger isn't even a professional dancer and she can do this so charmingly.

  • Tap dancing in roller skates!!! Insane!! Only Fred and Ginger could pull it off! I'd end up killing myself if I even tried! lol!

  • do you know what movie this is from? it's been bugging me for like 5 years! lol

  • Shall We Dance
