@TennisAnnalyst i'm not talking about the further away from your body you strike the ball the harder you hit it. i'm talking about the length of the swing. the take back with a single hander is greater as is the follow through. This means that more power is put into the swing from the rotation of the whole body. More momentum is imparted to the ball because a greater mass of your body is moving.
@TennisAnnalyst i don't really understand what you're saying. The further away from the axis of rotation that you strike the ball, the less power you will get. so from that respect it is easier to generate power from teh two hander because it is closer to your body and you're using two arms. However the length of hte swing of the single hander is so much longer and the rotation of your whole upper body is so much more that this allows you to put more power into the shot.
I almost get it!!!! it's not so difficult if u r one handed. i just keep the raquet in the middle and turn the shoulders 'til the body hold into reverse way and the head keeps watchin' the opposite court. Almost don't move the raquet it's like automatic.
Hey guys, I've always had a double-handed backhand, still it's never been quite as good as my forehand .. So, I decided to switch to a single handed one! I feel it gives me much more control, even though the power in my backhand decreased (which is normal 'cause now I use "new" muscles). But my dad who is also my coach says it's not a good idea to change your backhand at the age of 17. What do you think ?
@RasArth i was 17 when i changed from a double to a single. if you play with it for a month or two you'll find you're hitting it fairly naturally. you'll also find you can get as much if not more power from it because the length of the swing is increased. i'd say stick with it but i'm really biased towards hte single hander now cos i think it looks much nicer.
If any one thinks that hitting the bal hard, is standard to measure the quality of that shot, you're horribly mistaken. You see it all the time with amature players. If you can play soft and keep control on every shot, than you're starting to get somewhere. Rodger Federer is pure virtue to watch because he's the perfection of technique. Any trainer will confirm that. Yes Nadal is great, Djokovic is amazing as well and Murray is an incredible player but non of them can even be compared to Federer
I'd think everyone here criticising federer's backhand can only dream with having a backhand as good as his "relaxed practice backhand". I bet none of us could in a hundred years put that ball back in play, with it's spin, speed and weight.
If any of you can do it, don't bother coming here to reply, just go on to your countries tennis association and tell someone "I wanna play tennis professionally, I can hit a better BH than Federer". If you do post a video of it in the tube so we can laugh..
Safin, Agassi, Coria, Nalbandian, Tsonga, Nadal, Gasquet, Murray and Del Potro have all hit 100mph+ backhands. Probably countless others as well. Who are you kidding?
@wat870 LOL...uh, no. There are very few FOREHANDS hit over 100 MPH. When they are, it's immediately mentioned. There are only a handful of players who have ever hit 100+ MPH backhands...Federer is actually one of them (twice in his career--04 US Open vs. Agassi, 05 US Open vs. Hewitt). The idea that Murray could ever hit one 100+ is a riot.
@wat870 The fact that you think TSONGA has a big backhand says it all. Tsonga's backhand is a weak shot and, along with injuries, has prevented him from moving up into the class of the very top guys.
Del Potro's backhand is sound and consistent, but it doesn't have huge pace. Gasquet's does have more consistent pace than Federer...Nalbandian is more about placement and timing.
You see, Federer can hit his BH as hard as anyone...the problem is he can't keep it in play consistently when he does
@Ricearoni80 100mph backhands don't count if they don't go in, fool. Tsonga can hit massive DTL backhands and nobody would doubt the power of Delpo or Gasquet's backhands. Both have hit waaaaay more powerful winners than Federer's bh.
@wat870 Bullshit. Tsonga's backhand is weak and horrible...it's the worst in the top 20.
Who said anything about them counting if they don't go in? Federer's backhand isn't as GOOD as Del Potro's because it's inconsistent, but it's more powerful when he flattens it out. Go watch the AO final vs. Murray.
Gasquet's is the best backhand stroke in the game in terms of consistent power and placement, but it takes too long for him to set it up. His movement is thrown completely off.
@Ricearoni80 "You see, Federer can hit his BH as hard as anyone...the problem is he can't keep it in play consistently when he does" Thats what you said. If he can't get it in when he hits 100mph, it don't count. Tsonga's backhand has produced some huge winners. Check out his US open 09 match against Gonzalez. Delpo's bh is thumping and Gasquet may have a lengthy set-up but when he hits them, they stay hit.
@wat870 This is pathetic reading comprehension failure on your part.
I said he can't keep it in play CONSISTENTLY, not that he can't keep it in play. That's why he's not always aggressive on that wing...he starts making a lot more errors when he goes for the big hits. The 2 100+ MPH backhands I mentioned were both winners that were hit in play...he was more aggressive back in those days...probably because he was quicker and his body had less wear.
@TennisAnnalyst Haha, I've seen plenty of players max out with speeds like that.. What you initially said was that his offensive backhand is the most powerful on tour, not that the most powerful backhand he has hit is the most powerful on tour (also incorrect, I've seen umpteen guys hit harder than 96mph off the backhand). When Federer attacks on the backhand, it's not close to the power of the likes of Del Potro, Soderling, even Murray. He can't flatten it out like the DH of these guys.
@cooliogoodMuzic2 Hmm yeah you might be right. But did you see the % of services Nadal gave in 2008 I thought. It was like 95% of Nadel hes services was on the backhand at Federer.
even the best players in the world have to practice. But the practice hours between matches never take very long or are as hard as pretournament practices. But yeah, it's great to see that he doesn't try :P
WHAT IF?....while they were laying down the official rules of tennis, and it was determined that the game allowed only for the use of 1 hand on the raqcuet to play the ball during the point?
@dontclicktheusername it may seem like that to you, but in fact, he´s just having a light hit, to loosen up the strokes, he´s one of the few player´s, who doesn´t put strain on his body, when he´s playing tennis, he´s got a very harmonious game.
@TheMattSkellz i think what he may mean is federer seems very relaxed in practice...and generally its true federer plays with very little intensity in practice...just compare one of those backhands with a backhand winner he hits in a grand slam...very different...
but that is *probably* one of his secrets to success. he never over works his body outside grand slam and thats probably why hes gotten to so many semi finals and finals of grandslams...and many of them consecutively...
@konvictz0007 you are so wrong.... federer isnt training here....... he is just warming up because he has to play a match in a phew hours............... u dont become the greatest player of history by practising effortesly........... u must have never seeing federer working out
@dontclicktheusername That's probably why he is loosing now...He has the potential...but no determination....the determination he had a few years back..: (
@dontclicktheusername Federer use matches for practice and practices for relaxation. He does what he does in the video when we are taking a dump, watch TV or play video games.
life of a sports icon. i wonder what that would feel like, having tons of people line the sides of the court just to gawk at you while you warm up. Even after he hits the ball they don't follow it, they just continue to stare at him. hahaha wow.

how do i get that sound? just wondering, my k90 is strung at 57 lbs. will adding a little wilson shock take away the ping sound or is there no difference

he does not use shock absorber
The sound is mainly coming from extra wristy movement and spin on his backhands.
Keeps his wrist lose so that the racquet head whips at high acceleration at the contact.
