  • Zij zingt de waarheid,n.l.Liefde maakt blind,doof,en .......

  • Live TV broadcast, Newark, NJ, July 10, 1958

Georgie Auld (ts), Mal Waldron (p) Mary Osborne (g) Vinnie Burke (b) Osie Johnson (d).

  • @rdickinsondickinson Mas quisiera esa estar a la altura de Billie Holliday.

  • no one has her voice, she copies no one...Billie is the "Lady of Jazz"

  • tenía una voz hermosa.. molesta el pensar como las drogas y su estilo de vida afectaran tanto talento al final de su vida =/

  • Her voice almost sounds like Julia Stone.

  • it so doesn't matter to me what decade we're talking about - that's lady day - there's no one else for me ...

  • wow!

  • Certainly not Billie's best performance

  • All I can say is that this is the BEST Billie Holiday video I've ever seen. Thank you!

  • On tenor sax? Tony Scott?

  • No one like her. Best jazz singer ever.

  • Loving her...

Hey 4 deaf people here too xD

  • this lady day performance was filmed around late 1958 or early 1959. in what one now knows were the last months of her life, lady's voice was noticeably rougher but none the more expressive and it was perhaps of that roughness that made her singing all the more poignant and moving. lady still held until the very end her sense of timing and rhythm and her phrasing was still often imitated but never duplicated. billie was in my estimation the best that ever did it.

  • anyone notice how she changed the lyrics from the original she sang in the 30's"?

  • @emarsha3 that's the hallmark that was billie holiday....lady never sang the same song twice, even if it WAS the same song, if you get my drift.

  • Can anyone imagine what the world of music was like vocally, before Billy Holiday?

  • i didnt know she did drugs...ima look up her bio...

  • @graveyardqueen2393 lady day had a long history of heroin addiction but ironically enough that wasn't what killed her. billie holiday died 17 july 1959 from cirrhosis of the liver brought on by alcohol addiction which was a side effect of one of her many attempts to kick her heroin habit. it what was known now as the last years of her life, lady day was completely off drugs but unfortunately by that time the damage was done.

  • very nice song.Thanks a lot nerdhoe.

  • Classic! Thanks for this.

  • i love this song!

  • I love you... you are a Queen... for ever

  • Hail To The Legendary Great Miss Holiday!! We need more Talent Close to Hers in The Realm of Female Jazz Vocalists!! May The Universe Bring us One!!...

  • Guitar player is Mary Osborne.

  • THANK YOU!! I was trying to figure it out... you know that BILLIE had the choice of who would play with her. Very cool.

  • @hsbrent

The greats from the top of heaven made it possible to play with other greats!

  • ... it's my story! sadly ...

  • powerful song of truth..she was one of the great ones!!!

  • That was beautiful

  • How do you do you fool? Apt lyrics for her...

  • @faldarazzo and lady day would be the first to agree with you....she always said of her troubles and scrapes with the law that she was a big girl and knew what she was doing.

  • I think the word "cool" was invented for her

  • whos's the guitarist? anyone knows?

  • i think its Mundell Lowe

  • Comment removed

  • I love it when she gets up, getting ready to sing...

she looks like a little girl going to a carnival for the first time or something

  • @nigel1034 what a sweet way to describe it....lady often said that she was her happiest when she was singing.

  • my song! sing it lady sing it!!!!

  • i love this too!

  • wow.

  • The all-time best jazz singer PERIOD. Her phrasing no one can match. I thank Diana Ross for bringing Miss Holiday to my attention in LADY SINGS THE BLUES. The movie, of course, was not an accurate account of Miss Holiday's life, but had the movie not been made, I may not be a fan of Miss Holiday.

  • how fantastic this woman was!..love her always...and I share her fooling :-)

  • wow

  • Good period here.

  • Her Reality in Musical Art from a difficult era...shall continue for centuries.

The game of love can be real

  • It's beautiful to see her smile;such a lovely smile.

What more can you say of her voice that hasn't been said. She is the one and only.

  • This is spectacular!!

  • Billie, I LOVE YOU !

You make me proud to be a human being! I will see you in the promised land.

  • TOP SHELF

  • WHY dont you quit trolling and go get a life. If you dont like it, DONT LOOK IT UP AND LISTEN asshole. Billie Holiday is amazing, classic, and loved by millions. Yes, by the end of her life her voice was quite gravelly and rough from a very hard, sorrowful life. However, it is still great because of that; you llisten and feel what she went thru. Her voice has so much soul, you feel like your living the words w/ her. SHe can spin a hell of a phrase too.THATS why shes great.

  • @greekforasummer amen to that! couldn't have said better myself!

  • I love this clip. I too, like the beginning where she has that little grin on her face.

  • wonderful

    wonderful

    wonderful

    wonderful

  • YOUR MOTHERS GROSS

  • Where on earth did you find this clip? WONDERFUL!!!! Thanks.

  • i love her

the drugs started effecting her voice a little at this point but she is still the most amazing person to ever set foot on stage

all these people now-a-days have no talent compared to her :) i may be only 20 but even i realize that this world lost one of the most amazing people ever in musical history :(

  • I think Billie Holiday is really amazing too. No one can compare to her, but I really think some artists now-a-days are really good though. I really love Queen Latifah in Jazz. And Melody Gardot (Sound a bit like Holiday) and there are some more. Anyways, Billie still is the best traditional jazz singer ever!

  • check out Madeline Perroux---she's almost a dead ringer for Lady Day

  • I had all of her CDs already. She is an excellent singer but I like Melody Gardot better.

  • Katherine Whalen from the Squirrel Nut Zippers has Billie down to a T.

  • no she's not

  • @xxxBellexxx Personally I prefer her voice after it was damaged, it sounds more beautiful to me, and more expressive

  • @DubTheTexan I think we all have our eras. I prefer her voice in the early 50s. It was still full, and Norman Granz had her with small combos that let her voice quietly envelop you.

  • @xxxBellexxx U got Man, NOBODY...

  • @xxxBellexxx U got Man, NOBODY...

U got it Man, 'The Ultimate Jazz Singer' ever...

  • I love the look on her face at the begining. Then she gives a little laugh. Who knows what was going on in her mind at that very moment. great video.

  • yeah i thought the samething also what could be going through her mind whatever it was her grii was heart warming like she was having fun i wish i was there

  • yeah, it's nice to see her smile. god knows she didn't have enough to smile about in her life.

  • i feel you on that one

  • Never heard this song before, much less seen this clip. Keep 'em coming. Thanks for this classic gem.

  • I second that.

Am I the only one who notices how much Judy G.'s later voice & phrasing sound A LOT like this???:)

  • I love this, I have this song, along with others on the old 78s it is date June 1, 1937 of Billie Holiday she is backed by Teddy Wilson and his Orchestra anyone know anything about these old records?

  • i do. i can make a video of it if u like. i love that version

  • Thank you for responding. You can make a video? I would like to hear more about it. I'm very interested.

  • Delightful! Where do these new clips come from? - just hope they keep coming. Jim

  • Supreme. Funny how she changes the words though. I wonder if she forgot.

  • @guitaress1 nope, not at all....that was a billie holiday trademark....lady never sang the same song the same way, even in the same performance. that's what was so money about lady, she could take one song song and turn it around 20 different ways. music impressario john hammond, who discovered lady btw, also said this of her amazing ability to take a song and turn it into something personal, warm and rare. that was all part and parcel of the magic that was billie holiday.

  • @darchylde612

That's one of the best things about her singing. That and the fact that she reaches deep into your soul with her singing.

  • @73380401 indeed....there are some songs that lady sings and i cry like a baby every time i listen to them.

  • sweet post... thanks..

  • very nice
