  • 477 at me.

  • Con is a specific Windows-to-dos command. The reason that they dont say is because is can be used to wedge the OS apart and illegally mod the windows platform.

  • when I typed =rand (200, 99), "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" appeared a few thousand times. That sentence actually contains all of the letters of the alphabet!

  • This was names of device files, such things are used on UNIX operating systems, like BSD, Linux, MacosX.

Well, microsoft had this devices from MSDOS, because MSDOS, was a cheap pirate copy of DR-DOS (digital research) and their MSDOS was so absurd, they copied even this device files.

And now they even claim how good NT is compared to UNIX, forgetting that device files still present, drive C:-based filesystem design is inferrior to unix-like mounting and directx sucks compared to opengl

  • GAY. I have seen it all before and con cannot be a file as it is a system command, not command prompt. Con is short for console and that is a vital part of windows. And Microsoft has explained all of these before.

  • the =rand(200,99) Gives me a compelt survey on how too use Word :-) in danish even...

  • what if i call a folder con in linux and move it to the windows partition? o.O

  • when typing =rand(200,99) in word i get 225 pages of "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"

  • the =rand (200,99) doesn't work on my computer. i have Windows 7 but im not sure what version of Microsoft Word i have. plz someone help me i want to know how to get all those pages. idc what they are im just curious.

  • yeah ur right i tried it and thats fucking freak. i think microsoft is fucking con.

  • TDU :D

  • These are not easter eggs. The con one has explanation (reserved name, like has been said.). The =random() command in Word is an undocumented feature. you can do =lorem() as well.

Easter eggs and undocumented features are different things.

  • Con is Contrul Panl!

  • @VuranKaan well, i can name my folder fuck....

  • It wont let you name it con because it was reserved for Windows and Windows only.

  • too bad that microsoft COULD explain these.

these names are reserved for DOS commands

  • mine has 553 pages with 407,000 words using the 2010 version

  • rand command in word: first number = number of paragraphs, second number = number of sentences per paragraph.

  • I did it with xp word 2003 ıt says''The brown fox jump over the lazy dog''in 249 pages O.O

  • The command "con" refers to a folder in Win9x

  • 543 pages outlining the features of word is what i got

  • actullay, its 567 pages.

  • =rand (200,99) with me is 200 pages with "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." XD

  • @Narutofan9993

maybe your Microsoft office version is 97-2000..^_^

  • con its the real extnsion of the folders, try call the folder try.con, the "con" will be erased

  • If it's not explainable, it's not an easter egg. You have to program it into the OS in order for the OS to recognize it as a command. So they must know. They are lying.

  • GAY

  • I 264 pages only repeating El veloz murciélago hindú comía feliz cardillo y kiwi

  • this is so disorienting, just film your whole desktop next time

  • i got 756 pages o.o

  • @1Tristan2 Got 701 pages here >.<

  • Yeah Test Drive Unlimited!

  • "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." is a sentence that included all English letters from A to Z. In early days typewriter use this to test wheter all the keys are functional. But in Microsoft Office and some software, when they localize the software to their original language, they simply translated this sentence even their language never use English Alphabet, so when user see it in non-English would get confused.

  • @ikyokyo why didnt the typewriter manufacturers do this?

    abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

  • 565 in Ms word 2007

  • This isn't an easter egg. An easter egg is supposed to be good. This is more like a bug. Also the =rand "easter egg" is just sample text the microsoft purposely put in the application. Again not an easter egg.

  • Comment removed

  • Not an Easter egg, just a basic windows feature...

  • i putted the thing in word and it popped up 56385 pages of "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."OMG?

  • @pieguylol It's a sentance which contains all letters of the alphabet. In German it's "Franz jagt im komplett verwahrlosten Taxi quer durch Bayern." This happens when I type it in word.

  • i tried it and it worked!

  • In Word 97 using the "=rand (200, 99)" command. It said something different I got "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"

  • @Unicornguy lol there is every alphapet D:

  • just because YOU couldn't explain it doesn't mean that Microsoft can't explain it... try going to the Microsoft website some time kid, they have had these "easter eggs" already since 2000.

  • what sw did you use to record this zoomed video?

  • Mine's got 610 pages, Windows XP Pro

  • I just keep getting: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." repeating for 235 pages... Windows XP

  • It also doesn't work in XP.

  • i like that con thing ! thx for posting... mac4life

  • No, namimg something "con" is not an easter egg, but a Windows NT 16-bit emulator (a program in windows that runs programs made for windows 95) reserved file name. Thats why it wont accept that name.

  • wow office 2010 gives you a 567 page document... :P

  • u know thw whole "=rand (200, 99)" thing.

    its 756 pages.

    holy fucking shit!

  • What is all about??

DIR is a DOS command. Of course if you are not in DOS environment you CAN name a folder with this word. CON is not just reserved device, because you could still use it if you are not in DOS. It is an OUTPUT device reserved name. As far as I know, you can output data just by specifying output device name. Much like "Open "CON" or "AUX" for output", etc.

That's why you can use it.

  • hey what are you on about?

These aren't any way related to Windows Home server!

con and nul are special bits in the filesystem since forever dude. Aka /dev/console and /dev/null on linux afaik

  • "If you type in "=rand (200, 99)" in Microsoft word and then press enter,it will spit out a 469 long document!" wow add "433400 words"

  • wow this boring shit is so exciting.. they should make a videogame and a movie out of it.. i'm like flabergasted of how thrilling and a rollercoaster ride on my inanimate seat thisshitty video is.. it deserves every oscar nomination like that time the lord of the rings came out. here have a 5 for the adrenaline rushed video. it was amazing and shit.

  • "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is an English-language pangram (a phrase that contains all of the letters of the alphabet). It has been used to test typewriters and computer keyboards, and in other applications involving all of the letters in the English alphabet. Due to its shortness and coherence, it has become widely known and is often used in visual arts.

  • "In Microsoft Windows it is not possible to create or rename a folder called con because it is reserved DOS device name along with prn, aux, and nul. This has been subject to a hoax that claims Microsoft is unable to explain why" --- Wikipedia

  • if u put =rand (200, 20) see what happens

  • @jake1919199

    =rand (200,20) as a folder name???

  • no in microsoft word

  • then what?

  • Try to give other ports.

  • "con" means "dumb" in fench .. THATS WHY!

  • lol con in italian is "whit"

  • I believe in french it is the vernacular for vagina.

  • Nope. ''con'' in french stands for ''dumbass''

  • Yeah... In the 19th century ! Now it means more or less "dumb". By the way, it's not a easter egg but a limitation which comes from the time of MS-DOS. You can't use PRN, AUX, NUL, LPT1 and COM as well.

  • Actually my computer use/programming goes back to 1977. 'CON:' was short for console (combination of keyboard and display) and was used by forerunner operating systems such as CP/M.

  • you should really remake this with streaming words i don't get anything just by watching this....

  • read the description? -_-

  • There are actually three versions of the "easter egg" =rand... for Word 2007

    They are as following:

    =rand ()

    =rand.old ()

    =lorem ()

Inside the (), you can decide how many paragraphs "X" up to two hundred, and sentences per paragraph "Y" up to 99

    Ex. =rand (XXX,YY) =rand (200,99)

In Word 2003 and earlier , the =rand.old () command does not exist, due to the fact that in Word 2003 and earlier =rand () is the same as the new Word 2007 =rand.old ()

  • if you name a folder =rand (200, 99) and click cancel at the popup, it names everything =rand (200, 99) except the rubbish bin...

    LOL?

  • lol that actually works o.O

  • "con" isn't a command name, it's a device name. Device names are treated as files, allowing you to, say, make a quick text file by typing "copy con stuff.txt". It's a leftover of DOS that dates back to before Windows was around, more or less stolen from Unix, which does the same thing (mapping devices to files).

  • Don't you mean Microsoft can't FUCKING explain?

  • CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, LPT9

    Aux- auxiliar

    Con- console

    Prn- printer

    Nul- nul evident

    LPT1...LPT9, Com1....Com9 - other ports

  • @iSnoreee PRN - "porn" :D

  • @dx3100 PRN also stands for "when ever necessary"

  • =rand (200,99)

You can swap either of those numbers for any other number and it will come up with it. I think it's a DOS command that word got stuffed up with.

  • @zwerty007 RAND is a VisualBasic function, and Office comes with VBFA (visualBasic for applications)

  • In German 659 Pages O.o

  • It is also impossible to delete your system 32 folder...

  • yes it is format "c" drive

  • try naming a folder or file 'nul'. you will never succeed :D

  • In XP 1500 pages!!!!!! OO___OOO

  • what did they say? (or rather, what where they talking about)

  • i got the sentence in slovenian language(V kožuščku hudobnega fanta stopiclja mizar.) in english this would be something like(In the fur of the evil boy there is a table crafter)

  • no, thats computer code, its from a proggraming language called: "spanish" XD

  • (srry for the late reply) no that was slovenian, not spanish

  • I tried the microsoft word and it said "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog"

  • =rand (any set number) will come out on any word doc. its something like the fox jumped blah blha. its every letter in the alphabet used

  • @joecool83 sorry, but if you look close enough,it doesnt.'the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog' does not have an 's' in it. HA LOSERS!

  • It's actually meant to be "jumps", not "jumped".

  • Yeah it is meant to be jumps

  • It's "the quick brown fox jumpS over the lazy dog" not "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" because there are 2 Ds and Es idiot :Þ

  • @ToiletRule "Jumps" not "jumped"

  • Ohhh.....I KNOW IT!! The "CON" WORD IS A TYPE OF VIRUS FILE BEFORE, SO WE CANT NAME THE WORD CON

  • Also if you use con on system 32 it doesn't recognize it.

  • it is only a 567 page long document on Vista

  • If you type "con" (without the quotes) into Run, you'll crash the computer. That however, only applies to the Windows 9x family (95, 98, 2000, Millennium Edition).

  • Try naming a folder "nul" (w/o the quotes, not "null") same thing. Also, you cannot call it "com1" or "lpt1" has some DOS reason, youz are right. you could print by using "echo shit>lpt1" , if your printer is installed at the old shit connection xD

  • its bug!

  • LIL'BATESY

  • xD

    654 pages!!!

  • 459 pages

  • ''The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog'' is for font files?

i have some font files of that.

i also have ''Jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz.''

    i have both font.

  • If you wonder why this sentence is used for fonts, it is because that sentence contains every letter in the English language at least once.

  • screamer?

  • mine spat out a 225 page document containing "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" over and over

  • Yah, my Word 2007 it's only a 369 page long document...

  • mine kept saying "The quick brown happily eating thistle and kiwi." in spanish...

  • in my word 2003 it say The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

  • i tried it mine was 569 pages long....... fck me

  • You also can't use prn, aux, or nul.

  • Originally, you can't name your folder like a port name, IIRC that was CON, COM1, COM2, COM3, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3 and maybe a few more. It's an old restriction (since COMs and LPTs are virtually not in use anymore). The rand option is an remnant from the testing fuction.

PS. Don't ask me what the CON stands for.

  • Con = Console

  • Hey, thanks a lot :)

  • Oh and for the record you CAN create a folder named CON if you really wanted to. For example, go to START, RUN, then paste the following: mkdir \\.\c:\con

It will make a directory in C:\ named CON. To remove the folder again just paste rmdir \\.\c:\con into the RUN dialog box.

  • As mentioned, CON (controller) is a reserved word. Drop to DOS and type MODE CON and you'll see the details for the controller (in this case, the keyboard). It will tell you the repeat rate, delay rate, lines, columns, etc... all this can be set for example with mode con: rate=20 delay=2. (Similar to changing the keyboard repeat rate in the control panel).

  • on mine it showed me 686 pages, good!!

  • you are def stupid

  • i got 500 and something pages of it haha

  • on mine it has 12419 pages doing =rand (200,99)

  • i got "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" thing on word.

  • what you talking about?

  • the document said the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

  • hhaa..that's test phrase for Font's.. LoL...xD

  • in word 2003 this appers, that is word 2007.

  • Con = Console

In windows 98 + 95 going to run and typing

Con\con would crash the system. so microsoft disabled it

  • He-he, the same 'con' folder works in XP. M$ was too lazy to finally remove this feature.

  • READ THE FUKING DECRIPTION, GOD DAMIT

  • For Anyone Using XP,

Name A Folder Something Like Hello

Then Rename It CON Press Enter And It Reverts To The Previous Name 'In This Case HELLO'

  • Yep, the first number is the amount of paragraphs, the second the amount of sentences.

-rand (10,4) would be 10 paragraphs of 4 sentences each.

  • Both of those have been explained by MS....and by people commenting here....

    1 star

  • i got a load of crap bout microsoft word lol

  • In Word 2003, it makes several hundreds of lines: A brown fox jumps over a lazy dog.

  • actually, these folder names are "reserved names" used for system folders. "con" is just one of them...

Also try to rename a folder:

    prn

    aux

    LPT1

    LPT2

    nul

    You'll get the same results.

  • its acctually 543 pages, of shit.

and amazinfly sall, less than half a megabyte

  • This is not an easter egg. You cannot name a folder COM1 or AUX either. I learned this a while back. This is to avoid confusion when searching for a device.

And the second thing is the oldest thing in the book.

  • Correct.

  • Im not surpised that Microsoft would do this.

  • on 2003 version type in = rand (200,99)

and the lazy fox jumps over the dog on 295 pages

  • i only got 167 pages on 2003

  • Worked in XP and I'm scared to try it again.

  • When I typed in =rand(200,99) it said "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" repeatedly! It is scary!

  • the reason it says that is for testing fonts as that phrase uses every letter of the alphabet.

  • theres no "v"

  • There's a V in over.

  • lol..... way to read

  • oVer

  • In Spanish it gives me 658 pages.

  • Gives me "Flygande bäckasiner söka hwila på mjuka tuvor." My OS is swedish :P

  • lol

  • it didnt work for me...

  • The word thing is not mysterious. Microsoft added this function for creating test pages.

  • i did the "word" stuff and it gave me 400 pages of the sentence"the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy fox"

    WTF?

  • My version of Word is in french.

=rand(200,99) gives me ''Servez à ce monsieur une bière et des kiwis.'' which contains all the letters in the alphabet and means ''Serve this man a beer and kiwis.''

    MMMmmm beer and kiwis!

  • dam gringos

  • "con" is not a command, it's a device. It's used like a file but it's not, aka you can "copy cop file" to make a file. just type until you press ctrl-Z. Also you can pipe stuff to/from it.

  • mine's 654

  • i know this on since i was 10 years old !!!

  • The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. That's what I got.

  • You got 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' because that is one of the shortest sentences that uses all the letters of the alphabet in. I think it's a way to test if all the letters worked.

  • mine's 652

  • =rand (200, 99) is a font test =rand means test random font. (200 means that it will show the test 200 times. 99 is 9pt font.

  • mines 541 pages :P

  • You can't name something 'con' because 'copy con abcd.txt' creates an empty file called abcd.txt. The file is essentially 'copied' from nowhere.

  • you can also do =rand(001,01) or =rand (002,01) or =rand(999,99) and other random crap

  • mine's 567

  • mine is 529 pages

  • Word One Works On Mac Too 250 pages of the quick brown fox jumpz ova da lazy dog

Yup! The Quick Brown Fox Definetly Jumps Over Da Lazy Dog

  • try to rename any folder to PRN or go to notepad and write --- Bush hid the facts ---

without dashs, save it, close the notepad and open it again. you can write also --- this app can break --- save it as xxx.txt and reopen the notepad.

those notepad tricks work only on XP.

    ;)

  • what does it do?

  • bush one gets changed to chinese or japanese and the app can break on idk what it does doesn't do anything for me.

  • It's a bug with Notepad in XP.

    It's fixed in Vista.

Just google "this app can break"
