BRAVO! This lesson is just perfect (as described by Dave Weckl (video "back to basics"), Steve Smith (video "drumset technique") or on my website with photos and text: "heel toe", or "slide" technique).
Great video, you explained this concept very well. However.... there are no accents in double stroke rolls. Although it is natural for your dominant hand (or foot in this case) to have a heavier first tap, every time the stick (or mallet) hits the head it should sound the same (in terms of volume), unless written differently. An uneven roll could also be a side effect of poorly tuned drums and/or inaccurate playing spots.
Not too critical I believe. Just so long as your legs aren't less than 90 degrees (like with your knees pointing upwards). Parrallel is fine - I sit high because I don't have to try so hard for power sake - if my legs are parrallel I use more effort rather than just letting my leg 'fall' if I'm sitting higher if you know what i mean. . Thanks for watching. E.
Not too critical I believe. Just so long as your legs aren't less than 90 degrees (like with your knees pointing upwards). Parrallel is fine - I sit high because I find it easier to lift my leg and I like to be 'above' my rack toms. Thanks for watching. E.
Thanks for explaining this technique. But I've got a question: How crtitical is the seating position? I'm sitting with my upper legs remaining almost parallel to the ground and I saw you sitting very high. Do I need to sit so high for doing this technique?
@jordanjcm a triplet does NOT mean ''three notes in a row''. if you want to described playing three notes in a row, you say three notes in a row. a triplet, in terms of musicology, is 'three strokes in the time of two strokes in the relevant signature/speed/etc''. a swing pattern ('spang-a-lang') is a triplet. hence john bonham 'triplets'.
@queenmcsleaze It was just a bit faster of a double. I realize a triplet is not 3 notes in a row. but it is not two either. LOL. Anyway, this was great vid, and I did not mean to come across as a 'know it all' or a 'fault finder'. So I apologize. There was 1 quick triplet at 5:27 but then it went right back to doubles. If I am wrong, my bad. I do have crappy speakers. LOL. However: If you include his hi hat hit in there: that was a triple. Bass drum was doubles
@jordanjcm ah no man it's cool you've nothing to apologize for - and it ain't my own video anyway. i went off on a rant about terminology. I thought on second glance actually that you were right about it not being what he says it was. firstly i mistake what you meant by it not being a triplet - you meant of course the timing, which is the real issue, whereas i wrongly assumed you meant its not a triplet of any kind cuz theres two kick notes. I'm a student too of terminology, still learning.
@queenmcsleaze Im still learning as well. In fact I will always be learning. Thats what I love about music. You can NEVER stop learning. You are very humble as well, which is a rare quality. A quality that most great musicians have. Cheers.
Hot damn! Finally a clear cut explanation on how this is done. I've been drumming for years but always done it the (as my friend says) barbaric way of just basically running on my double kicks... i can get the speed and what not but its not as precise and clean as i want it. This has definitely helped. Thanks~
Hey Metalhead... sorry for the delay in replying. Chrissy holidays & all you know...
The kit isn't mine. I borrowed my friends brand new Pearl Vision. It's a plastic wrap model but sounds great. We put an Evans Emad heads on the kick but what's really amazing is I filmed these vids with my pocket digi camera. The sound came out better than if I'd used a proper handi cam. How weird is that!
yeh i think its a good eplanation your basically going over the basic movement of what to do and then showin it if i didnt know this technique i would after watchin your vid
Thanks for such a clear explanation. I had been confused about this, as I naturally fell into a toe-heel technique. It's nice to know it's not just an anomaly.
Great video! Very helpful
