  • Breaking Parallel. That is a true squat. Not only will you get more results muscle wise, but it will prevent knee injury. Stopping parallel is very hard on your knees.

  • This video is really old and I'm doing a bunch of things sub-optimally.

Yes I think this was in the Ripptetoe era... but follow starting strength led me to a 400lb olympic squat followed by a torn meniscus. I know can still squat over 400lb but I use a powerlifter box squat stance and that is proving to be a lot more effective and safer for me.

  • Yo twa!

    nice squating man

    Well done.

  • Nice bro. Bury that shit till your ass touches your heels. This is a real mans squat.

  • I'm only 13 years of age and I can manage to squat almost 700lbs ATG, 100% full range, perfect form, and NO drugs, not even protein shakes, seriously.

  • @AndyHarglesis no you're not. shut up.

  • @AndyHarglesis Girls don't care about that really

  • @zasabiibasaz Tell that to my thousands of female stalkers. :D

  • @AndyHarglesis I'm referring to intelligent none superficial women.

  • his hips are rising faster than his shoulders... FAIL

  • i dont wanna bash you dude but all the weight is on yr quads.. your not going to be able to put up near as much weight with just yr quads

  • @Andyharglesis

No you do not. If you do post a video and become the world's strongest 13 year old

  • I'm 13, NATURAL at 203lbs and 6'4", no DRUGS not even PROTEIN SHAKES and I squat 690lbs for 1 clean ass to the grass rep, no squit!

  • @AndyHarglesis Prove it .....

  • @LRGHMN I will, just sub and you'll see. :D

  • @AndyHarglesis I guarantee you're a better story teller than a powerlifter.... Maybe you should stick to what your good at....

  • WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE FUCK

  • Immaculate form bro!

  • lol I can only squat 185 and I can't go down nearly that far.

  • @burns1112227 Keep working on it. It doesn't matter how much weight you can lift, make sure your form is right and you get in the reps and you'll get stronger and more flexible.

  • wow

  • sandstorm!

  • wow incredible man

  • i dont understand why you people are complaining about his form, its one of the better ones ives seen. The fact is that alot of you people complain about something you think you know alot about, but i bet that if we asked you to show us how to squat the results would be ugly.

  • @perojankovski ROFL good attempt at trolling XD

  • i know a junior in high school right now that does 4 45 plates on each side. and if i add that up right, its 405 with bar.

  • @RossTheBossHD i know a sophmore who works out with that and varsity players max out with that or workout wit that

  • Way too much quad domination. More hamstring!

  • Thats 325 pounds? looks like 600 lol what kind of weights are those

  • You should look into low bar squats, trapping the bar across your delts. It will give your legs the same workout, but reduce the risk of back injury due to less lever force from the lower bar position.

  • no spotters no belt lets be safe now

  • is it correct form if you dont make the noise????

  • um its unsafe to not have a spotter

  • @jagopcb1

Is it? If he is doing no no no squats on an OL platform with bumper plates, can he not just dump the weight?

  • excellent form going down just past halfway ,thats wat i call a squat

  • you know wuts so fuckin funny every vid ive watched so on how to sqaut some knucle heads saying wrong so whers ur fuckin on how to sqaut as a vid response huh motherfuckers. lol bunch of clowns

  • You finished before the song got to the best part

  • WHATTTTT!!!!! you my new hero!!!! haha ;)

  • "How to squat..." and he is doing one thing wrong

  • nice squats. good luck walking when you hit 50.

  • Nice squat man. Looked nice and tight under the bar. Only advice would give you is try keeping your elbows down. Could be a flexibility thing though. I'm just starting to squat again after an injury and its a lot harder than I rmember

  • good squat vid. Those of you who say its not I guarantee you a pussy with no legs, back, size or strength, and don't know how to lift. I don't have any vids on youtybe yet, but I'm a nationaly ranked NPC bodybuilder and a powerlifter...

  • As far as I know, that is a perfect depth. Some people go lower, some people go higher, most people do a curtsy so those folks will tell you that this is too low. Thanks for the video.

  • @0:29 looks a bit like obama

  • Bravo!!! Perfect form with tremendous weight

  • Thats is the right way to sqaut!

  • sandstorm ftw :)

  • Squatting to some sandstorm

  • very nice!!! imo all other types of squats count as half squats if you ever try olympic squats

  • this is fake

  • good squat- just been browsing through all the squat vids and this is by far one of the best:

    - good depth

    -good stance

    -hip drive

    -great weight

    -safely excecuted while maintinaing intensity

  • Nice looking squats. I love the way full deep high bar squats look. I recently switched from low bar and am enjoying the increased range and reduced hamstring dominance. I have however noticed a significant drop in deadlift strength. Perhaps deadlifting or RDL's should be done more often for the lifter who does high bar squats?

  • Good squats. Glad to see another lifter that does it full and correctly!!!

  • how many kg's are on that bar:|

  • So for an Olympic squat, it's ok to let your kneecaps go beyond the tip of your toes when squatting? Because in regular squats I've always been told that your kneecaps should never pass the tips of your toes when going down...

  • 325 lbs sounds about right he's doing about 147 kilos... a 7ft bar bends noticably at 160 kilos normally... 330 lbs is 150 kilos.. personnally I thrash out 190 kilos (over 400lbs) and that is where the big money is :P

  • "knees tracking over the toes, the butt back, and the toes slightly turned out in order to allow the hips to fall through." Agree on all counts. Good form good squat; if you've improved all the better -

  • That my friends is a squat. Those that can...do. Those that can't...critique and make negative comments.

  • nicely done. he must have strong legs. i have strong fingers ,,, yea i type on youtube and stuff.

  • I noticed that on the way down, your butt and back curl out a little bit; is it impossible when doing full squats to keep your back straight the entire way?

  • good stuff, keep up those real squats

  • o strong ass

  • I like to squat after I eat cottage cheese and brussel sprouts because when I go down I release gas and when I go up I breath that gas in and get extra power from my on methane, it's my secret formula for bigger quads.

  • I amazed myself in the gym today, I did 25 pounds on each side for 8 reps and I do think the bar weighs 45 pounds so that's a total of 95 pounds for 8 reps, I got so excited I left the gym and hit Arby's and had a Beef-n-cheddar combo with a chocolate Jomocha milkshake, I still can't believe I did so much, I am really doing it!!

  • with how far you go down in the squat everyone says different things. if you are doin gym qualifications they will tell you parallel but most weight lifters will tell you a2g. personally i like to go as far as i can puts less stress on my knees when stopping to come back up. this is also if you watch a baby playing and bending down like a squat this is what they will do.

  • how far the knees go over the ankles will be a function of one's height and ankle/calf flexiblitiy. If you are taller than average in general your knees will overshoot your toes.

  • @twaham im 6 foot 3, so i dont have a genetic predisposition for squatting, but i am incredibly flexible. I can pretty much get my ass touching the ground without my knees overshooting my toes :):)

  • @twaham im a 6ft 4 squatter but have enough flexibility to get my ass withing a few cm of the floor without over balencing, so my knees dont overshoot m toes:)

  • @twaham is that true man? cause people tell me to go 90 degrees but no matter how hard I try I cant help but make my knees go past my toes

  • @twaham Thank you addressing this. You're one of the few people out there who know this. those fitness pros who still share that fitness garbage myth of not shoving the knees over the toes is just utter non sense.

  • 3-all the way down like this guy: Definitely more painful and probably more work being done but aside from fucking up your knees, you can end up

    -herniating (medical emergency)

    -Blood vessel rupture (medical emergency)

-Worsening of a heart condition you might not know about (sudden death)

  • before posting comments, feel free to site your credentials. a 90 degree bend is actually the weakest position of the knee joint. It's unfortunate to see all the advice out there telling you to go eccentrically to the weakest point in a range of motion and then come back.

everyone's form will vary slightly, but in general, most people will do best if they have the knees tracking over the toes, the butt back, and the toes slightly turned out in order to allow the hips to fall through.

  • @twaham I agree totally with this comment. I feel very vulnerable to injury when I try to stop at 90 degrees versus going beyond paralell. Stopping at paralell puts a lot of strain and stress on the knee joint, apparently..

  • @twaham,

Agreed. Full Squatting is a healthy knee position, all of this "knees over toes is bad" is nonsense. If people are fearing that why don't they Low-bar squat.

I like both forms, I normally do Low-bar, but High-bar is starting to interest me a lot more, infact it motivates me more.

Great job on the squats BTW.

  • @twaham Nice squat! A little bit of rounding of the back in the hole, but hey, nobody's perfect. The depth was excellent, and overall the form was pretty damn good. Also, I just wanted ot say that this guy that's trying to tell you how to squat is an idiot. Haha.

  • @twaham True is that if u deepsquat u cant take as much weight as u would if u wouldnt ... that means that u put less stress on your knees by squating lower weights but more effective !

  • @starnixode Yeah this is just wrong. Your knee is actually the most protected in a full squat. The only exception is if you have prior knee injuries. 2 is the shortest way to require knee surgery. Look up shear forces in squats.

  • i can't get a streights answer out on squatting..

some say go deep.. some say it fucks ure knees.. other say no ... is this good form? all isee wrong here is his back should be more streight.

  • @MrsRandomMadeMeDoIt all I can say is: all the strongest people go deep! And going deep is actually better for your knees in the long run

  • you don't need spotters or a catch rack with bumper plates. Simply let go of the bar and hop forwards. Olympic lifters squat like this all the time.

  • heavy weight ! good job dude !

  • it would be bad on the knees if your not concentrating the weight on ur heels, also when going up u shouldnt fully lock out ur legs, instead have ur knees slightly bent cuz its too much weight for ur knees to handle even if its a second

  • Holy shit...without even a spotter...

  • Awesome lol Cracking Knees :( give it 30 years lol im screwed for tht haha

  • damn u are one strong mothafucker haha

  • Could someone help me with my form, please. watch?v=PdAzLRnRChM

  • everything about that squat was perfect, clearly in control of the weight, this guy is very strong!

  • Form looked great to me

  • @urstuffsuxminedoesnt

    no such thing

  • @urstuffsuxminedoesnt going that deep puts him in a stronger position of power instead of doing pussy squats like most kids

  • RRAAAAGEE

  • if you want to see cool squat workout watch?v=MhtV5NCCIUY

  • Shit dude that rack is unsafe, it wobblied so bad, and when you did your first squat i thought your legs was gonna giveway.

  • No catch rack....looking for an injury. Only takes that one time.

  • You're an idiot. You don't need a catch rack, you just dump the weight and move forward. Watch Olympic style lifters and get out of the big box gyms.

  • BULLSHIT!! looks more like only about 275lbs with the bend in the bar and the speed of the lift! also a recipe for disaster with no spotter.

  • omg such scrubs....

  • homotang, I don't know for sure who you are or aren't talking about, but I think it's safe to say you've never met any of us.

  • This guys really strong, but he's risking death by squatting without a catch rack.

If you are going to squat heavy do not do what this guy does in that aspect by squatting without a rack with catches.

  • Risking death? haha wtf

  • I don't know why everyone complains about a catch rack.

Its very easy to throw a bar back.

    Good Squat Budd!

  • I don't thick it's safe to 'throw back' about 500 pounds, especially in a fatigued state.

  • @Mistermikeb He has bumper plates on so if he can't lift the weight he just dumps it behind him...This is actually better then doing them with some type of cage because he wont bend his bar when he dumps it...

Nice form on the squat too...

  • ah...yeah he went down deep and defintely showed complete control of the weight.

  • Squatting just below parallel is better for the knees because if you stop at parallel all the stress of stopping that motion is done by the knees. When you squat just below parallel your posterior chain stops the force. Furthermore your knees are strongest fully flexed and fully extended, all the in between is where most injuries occur. Watch Olympic lifters during power clean or their workouts, they squat below parallel. Squatting differently is wrong unless your core is weak or flexibility bad

  • scik squat.. i like the way you have your feet facing outwards quite alot like i do.. puts so much less strain on the knees its unbelievable

  • chump j/k

  • wtf youre freakin GREAT! i want to be that strong!

  • Thank you all for your comments!

Yes indeed, that squat was done in 2006, i'm a lot stronger now and my form has improved.

In this vid, my knees do overshoot my ankles a bit too much. I've been working on that.

In terms of the plates, as posted in the comments, those are olympic bumper plates, so they are thicker than usual. The total weight including the bar is 345 pounds.

  • @twaham oh ok i was scared casue u didnt look like as big as mariusz pudizianowski and that looked like 800 pounds lol

  • @twaham Olympic bumper plates are color coded and are in kilos. Most Crossfit affiliates use training bumpers like the ones in the video. These are training bumpers but not Olympic. Great squat technique.

  • @twaham you know its perfectly natural for ur knees to go past ur ankles in a deepsquat. ur body is designed to do that. as long as they go in the same path along ur feet its fine

  • good form but his knees when passed his toes

  • who fn cares if they did his ass touched his calves..stop clutching at straws....

  • if u dont want to fuck up your knees u should care......that is a major cause for bad knees when you get older

  • wrong!!! going down that low puts all the pressure on your qauds hams ass and hips..it's when you only go down 1/4 or 1/2 way down that you put pressure on your knees..if you dont think so go ask tom platz

  • very well said

  • @collin355 Thank you for posting that. Can't argue with Tom Platz Lol! Another thing people forget is that everyones body is different and responds differently to other exercises. Some prefer going 90 degree and some ass to grass.

  • i saw a scare crow wanking in a field the other day! not possible i thought!! hes just clutching at straws

  • That's a legit squat. The form is great, and I'm sure that weight is real too.

  • Now that ladies and gentlemen is a squat..

+ this guy is man enough to let people comment on the video ^^.

    ***** stars

  • its real

size does say every thing its strenght not size

  • bigdaddy0567 - congratu-fuckin-latations. ..You're da man!

  • HAHAAH I DINT THOUGHT THAT THIS GUY COULD DO THAT,WHAT THE HELL?! i thought hes gonna get killed xD

  • How the hell some1 not that big lifted that?

  • OMG!!!!!! GO for the olympics dude!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • To whoever called BS on this video:

first of all the bar is bending a bit.. if you dont see that bend, you are blind to details..

2nd of all, they mentioned that its only 325 lbs and its bumper plates,,,,, and its bending just as much as an olympic bar would at 325 lbs..

and the squat depth is perfect

  • @TungstenLion actually I think that's a cheaper version of a bar, or else the bars I use for squatting are stronger and don't bend as much with 325/345.

  • do you hear it?? WANDERLEI SILVA is coming XD

  • no, i saw the bar flexing...

  • Nice.

The only part that had me kind of wince, and I only mean KIND OF was when you were in the pit. You had some SLIGHT lumbar sacril rounding.

If it doesn't bother you, nbd. Just keep an eye on it because you MAY have issues down the road.

And all these ninnies who talk about "no knees past toes" need to do some modern day research.

Two names to start with: Charles Poliquin and John Berardi. Now start reading ;)

  • I have read that when the knees go past the toes you get a 30% increase in stress put on your knees. But when the knees aren't allowed to go past the toes there is an 1100% increase in stress placed at the hip.

So many of the olympic lifts are so strict in form that I think we miss the functioning point. Let the body have some say in where it needs to go.

  • are those (hey look at how much is on the bar) kinda of plates? that looks like 600 lbs but in reality its 225! hahahah what egotistic free weights those are

  • no, theyre olympic weights it looks about 600lbs

  • Another thing to point out is that taller people have a more difficult time squating then shorter people because when the femur is longer then they will tend to lean in more at the bottom. Im my opinion this guy did it perfect. Correct stance, back straight and not arched in.

  • Im tired of people discussing the knees past the toes nonsense. If you squat full form the knees will go slightly past the toes. If your stance is wide and you go down then it wont go past the toes. If your stance is close it focuses more on quads then it will goes past the toes slightly. Im tired of losers always complaining about peoples form. These people have major inferiority complexes. Who are you to tell someone is doing it completely wrong. If it works for him it works for him.

  • Darude!

  • light weight baby!

  • PEANUTS

  • Damn dude you go freaking low. Nice.

  • Excellent form man!

  • fantastic squating

  • Fine squats nice work.

  • gainera knows whats up, have you ever done a full front squat, your knees are way over your toes but the weight is on your heel, you're not raising the heel thats what puts pressure on the knees

  • Knees go over toes in a proper squat. Having said that, if you are going up onto your toes when you squat(like 90% of americans do), then be prepared for knee injuries.

Weight stays on the heel during a proper squat. How far the knee travels over the toe depends on bar position, and any forward lean in the squat.

  • you also had too much weight on your toes, and your feet shouldn't be pointed out so much. good weight though.

  • sorry to tell U this I hear the same shit from many many trainers but first of all having feet a little pointed out reduces the stress from the knees and nothin builds ur glutes n quads like deeps squats below parallel which of course knees will go over toes. about knees and toes: they should be aligned in a straight line thats it.

  • Explain the mechanical function of the knee and why going over the toes increases the chance of injuries please.

  • His focus is on heavy weight and not technique, (which is fun now and then) but he snaps way too low into a rest and snaps back up into another rest and thats scary and incorrect and what is that spanish flamigo dance he does while lifting the weight off the rack?

  • Which of my comments was this directed to?

  • Hi Xplodz, i will do my best to answer the knee over toes question. the squat movement should start at the hips going back in the squat and not the knees going forward, by doing this you will increase flexion of the hips and decrease the flexion of the knee compared to a knee over toes squat. the thinking behind this is that the hips are a stronger and more muscular joint then the knee's. Secondly, by pushing the knees forward you take them more away from your center of balance = + stress :)

  • Who taught you how to squat drop dead gorgeous. I would appreciate a video response of you squatting with your knees behind your toes. good luck dude

  • who taught you how to squat drop dead gorgeous?

I would appreciate a video of you or anyone showing me a perfect full squat with your knees behind your toes? Your calling these guys ignorant?

  • thanks, man!!

  • yeah... good job, man!!

    that's the way to squat.

obs.: anyone knows what the name of music that is playing in video??

  • "Sandstorm" by Darude.

  • thats some heavy weight, good form.

  • You rock dude!

    Perfect squat!

  • Comment removed

  • You have never, in your entire life, squatted with or around actual, competing weightlifters (people who compete in the clean & jerk and snatch), have you?

  • this squat is perfect ! people who criticize are simply jealous
