The biblical writers didn't have rocket ships. All they knew FOR CERTAIN is that the earth was NOT being held up by "gods" like all the cultures around them believed. They actually knew this, by faith, not by scientific experiments. Therefore they knew, by faith, that God must have hung the earth "on nothing" or established an unseen natural force of some type such as "pillars". They only knew no "gods" were holding it up which seemed impossible. Amazingly they knew this by faith.

Fifth, in Luke 17:31-36 Jesus tells what will happen when He returns next time... there will be people working in the fields (day) and some will be raptured and others left behind... and at the same time, there will be people sleeping (night) and some raptured and some left behind. The scenario would never work for a flat Earth because it couldn't be night and day at the same time, but, it does work for a spherical Earth. The Bible shows us, the Earth is a sphere! @11aav To be fair, in Jesus' day Eratosthenes had already discovered that the Earth is spherical. However, the Old Testament does seem to paint a very flat picture of things. Also Jesus claims not to know when his second coming will be, so he gave examples from all times of day. Either way. A much stronger case could be made, however, that the bible promotes Geocentrism. Which is why the church opposed Copernicus and Galileo so severely.

First, the Bible says nowhere that "the Earth is flat". Second, Is. 40:22 gives the general shape of the Earth (a circle) if you were to see it from outer space, which is true. Third, there are other Bible verses that show the Earth IS A SPHERE. Examine Job 26:10 where it says," He (God) drew a CIRCULAR horizon on the face of the waters". When I look at a horizon on the ocean, I can see a slight curve when looking from left to right. A flat surface wouldn't be curved. The Bible is correct....

GPS works by GPS satellites orbiting the Earth. For GPS to even work, these satellites need to orbit. GPS works perfectly fine, thus the satellites orbit, thus the Earth is round.. If the Earth was not round, how would I be able to travel in a straight line, only to return to where I traveled from in the first place?
If a GPS satellite were to travel around a flat earth travelling above it's surface, it would be much like a like a needle on a record disc, it would still perform the same functions, more or less.

I have seen the curvature of the Earth with my own eyes, from mountain tops and from airplanes. The ocean is affected more by the Moon's gravitational pull than it is by the spinning of the Earth.. That's why we have tides. In addition, I have flown around the Earth, which would be impossible if it was a flat disc.

The biblical writers didn't have rocket ships. All they knew FOR CERTAIN is that the earth was NOT being held up by "gods" like all the cultures around them believed. They actually knew this, by faith, not by scientific experiments. Therefore they knew, by faith, that God must have hung the earth "on nothing" or established an unseen natural force of some type such as "pillars". They only knew no "gods" were holding it up which seemed impossible. Amazingly they knew this by faith.

@11aav To be fair, in Jesus' day Eratosthenes had already discovered that the Earth is spherical. However, the Old Testament does seem to paint a very flat picture of things. Also Jesus claims not to know when his second coming will be, so he gave examples from all times of day. Either way. A much stronger case could be made, however, that the bible promotes Geocentrism. Which is why the church opposed Copernicus and Galileo so severely.

First, the Bible says nowhere that "the Earth is flat". Second, Is. 40:22 gives the general shape of the Earth (a circle) if you were to see it from outer space, which is true. Third, there are other Bible verses that show the Earth IS A SPHERE. Examine Job 26:10 where it says," He (God) drew a CIRCULAR horizon on the face of the waters". When I look at a horizon on the ocean, I can see a slight curve when looking from left to right. A flat surface wouldn't be curved. The Bible is correct....

GPS works by GPS satellites orbiting the Earth. For GPS to even work, these satellites need to orbit. GPS works perfectly fine, thus the satellites orbit, thus the Earth is round.. If the Earth was not round, how would I be able to travel in a straight line, only to return to where I traveled from in the first place?

I have seen the curvature of the Earth with my own eyes, from mountain tops and from airplanes. The ocean is affected more by the Moon's gravitational pull than it is by the spinning of the Earth.. That's why we have tides. In addition, I have flown around the Earth, which would be impossible if it was a flat disc.

The Bible doesn't prove human nature. Psychology proves this. Very few civilizations have been destroyed by themselves, most have been destroyed by competing civilizations or natural disasters. Civilizations based on religion have suffered the same fates.

Yes Psychology is a tool which men have build and developed their understanding of human mind and character..however in the bible we can learn a great deal about Psychology, with the very many and different complex characters...like Moses, Pharaoh, Samson,Gideon, Joshua...to name a few...we laern how they thought and acted in a given and difficult situation and through which we can learn a great deal, of how folk can react when confronted with life. suffering and death situations.

Sadly, matter can be created and destroyed: antimatter, the Large Hadron Collider, and nuclear fusion.
And personally, I think God could've created the Earth through the Big Bang, but there's a difference between 7 days and 13 billion years.

Well words in the bible are claimed to be the words of god then there shouldnt be such error for god is perfect.Even single mistake in such a book would mean that god is not perfect and the religion is flawed beyond reason.

The chances of 66 books/letters all lieing about miracles, without real motivation, is slim.
Alot of the claims in the Bible lack no motivation behidn their statement other than "we truly believe this".
For example "Nothing is impossible for he who believes", there is no motivation why anyone would make up such a large claim.
And you can't convict someone for a crime if there's no motivation.

You can convict somebody of a crime even if they didnt have a motive. Just gather enough evidence to show beyond reasonable doubt that the suspect comitted the crime.
And besides, there is a motive. Religion keeps tribes together, and keeps the leaders in power.

But the reality is that no amount of evidence can prove something to be impossible, there is only possibilities and witnesses.
It's all about the amount of scriptures and big claims made over the space of many years, which is what makes it so trustworthy.

The egyptians worshipped pharoahs, the romans worshipped caesar, the aztecs worshipped their leader. All powerful rich men, and compare it to Judaism and Christianity. Even Jesus was a poor man.
Where's the motivation for attributing greatness to something other than yourself if you're capable of fooling people?

I accept much of the Bible as literal, but I try to interpret the Bible by discovering what the words "literally" mean to say; fundamentalists often make the mistake of interpreting everything "literally" instead of interpreting it as it was intended to be interpreted.

So you are interpreting the bible - your interpretation of what is itself an interpretation of a translation of yet another translation of stories about stories (there are no eyewitness accounts in the bible; it is entirely hearsay). Your claim that it is entirely hearsay is unsubstantiated, considering Biblical scholars disagree amongst themselves as to whether or not there are any eyewitness accounts (particularly in reference to the Gospels).
But aside from that, I never said I was "right". I do my best to get it right, but as a fallible human being I am bound to get some things wrong. However, most of the Bible is clear-cut and simple to understand (the Gospels and epistles (excluding Paul's),

You do have a good point though- and your argument is one of the things which draws me nearer to the Catholic Church; if I were Catholic, I would simply say that the "keys" have been given to the church, and the church, by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, has been given authority to interpret the scriptures.
But alas, I do not currently have the means to make this argument which would so easily solve the problem.

Bible is just a group of books, and should be taken serious if you want to learn about society, culture, and understanding of religion, but for the rest of it..Well Bible contradicts itself in many of it's passages, so yes don't belive in everything you read..Personally I don't belive in "God". But that is what I've chosen, everyone have their own faiths and must be respected, even if you think you know they are wrong.
