you are probaly using to much of your hand when u graze the string so you end up muting it making the thud noise

drop d tuning is when you lower your 6th string to match the 4th string's pitch, alternate picking is simply up and down strumming, generally used for arpeggios and scales

Well I started with the White Stripes, very basic but still fun, a bit harder but not that hard is System of a Down, oh and you might want to try some Ramones (seriously you can learn 3 songs in 5 minutes). To learn stuff like this you need flexible fingers, starts slow and work your way up. Slayer is usually hard but Raining Blood is fairy simple, though it's fast and needs a few stretch riffs, so try that if you dare ;)
