This is a fascinating document. The playing is natural as is the phrasing. Just beautiful. And how unusual to hear the melodic descending minor scale at the end rather than the harmonic. Were these Liszt's first thoughts?
@nevskixx The playing is actually by Gerard Carter, but he incorporates changes in the score Friedheim made in his recording. RollaArtis is currently preparing an upload of the recording of his copy of the Friedheim rolls. The changes to the scales are interestingly not included in Friedheim's edition of the Sonata, whereas other changes are. See lisztsonata[dot]com
An incredible experience to hear this! - Thank you so much. This glimpse into the past is a lense that puts Liszt and his aesthetic into such sharp focus... who would think this could exist. Yet Mr. Friedheim's deep friendship for Der Meister - now transcends time, in a way that is just as, or perhaps, even more beautiful than music itself... the sonata being an affair of the heart.
Thank you for your kind comment. It really hits the point. Friedheim was one of Liszt's greatest pupils+promoters, especially by performing his Sonata again and again, sometimes against heavy opposition of the press. The background audio was actually played by Gerard Carter, but incorporates some details of Friedheim's roll on the last page of the score. As soon as a recording of the Friedheim roll suitable for public release is ready, I will announce it to friends and subcribers.
Thank you for your subscription, too! And thanks for your kind words on our research. We are currently working on another LPSM (Liszt Piano Sonata Monograph(s) - a series launched by Wensleydale Press this (Liszt) year - see lisztsonata[.]com). Unfortunately the Friedheim roll has only been recorded in a version suitable for our analysis, but not for public release. The roll collector is working on this, but it can take some time.
