Like he said, he avoided the shots and everything. And Meryl finally understands, you see Johnny loves Meryl, snake might've on Shadow Moses, but he disappeared after they left Shadow Moses. Meryl loved snake back then, but with the years, and understanding everything, there is no way it would be possible now. Meryls choice wasn't stupid.

I always hated that Meryl ended up with Johnny. After seeing this scene again, it was for the best. Even if he didn't suffer from accelerated aging, she could never have ended up with Snake. In my mind, Snake is the kind of person that if he was to settle down with anyone it would be someone who was his equal. He's a class of soldier Meryl isn't and never could be. Like he said in the first MGS, "she's green."

@Koulisman92 Yes. He's also the same guard in all 4 Solid games. The one with the bathroom trouble, who Meryl beats the shit out of in the first Metal Gear Solid. He also guards your cell in 1, and his father guards Big Boss's cell in 3. In 2, if you watch Otacon's sister with the directional microphone, 'she' finds him. Also in Ocelot scene near the hostage room, aim the microphone away from the conversation to the bathroom.

Don't point to the one cut scene where they try to do way to much with the rookie, where they declare the guy who's supposed to adapt to war is actually is a 10 year vet and the explanation given to why he doesn't have nanos creates about 20 blatantly obvious plot holes.

A videogame cutscene on its own, particularly a mgs one, can only argue about visual aesthetics. Mgs can be debated as art and as entertainment, but as a whole imo
To be fair, this scene isn't as stupid if you knew what they were talking about (all that shit about nanomachines probably flew over Ebert's head.) And the action's pretty cool. The proposal itself sucked, but I loved how Meryl was like "no bitch, YOU marry ME."
Still, whoever showed this to Ebert has made an embarrassment out of both Metal Gear fans and gaming overall. Especially since this is, story-wise, the worst games in the series (besides MG1.)

For example, the part where Snake fist-fights Liquid on top of REX in MGS1 doesn't carry any weight unless you know about LET, the "inferiority vs superiority" bs, and all that other shit. Then you see the point, and it becomes epic. Same with Sniper Wolf's death. You need to build up hatred for her so you feel like an ass when you hear her back/sob-story.

The music can be art. The story behind it can be art. However, the sum of all parts are to movies what a tofu burger is to meat. The elements that compose it feel like the real thing, but it is really just hill of beans masquerading as meat.
If this were a scene in Epic Movie, the complaints would be numerous.

Awesome game but The meryl and johnny subplot was a little weak. It took away from the gravity of the situation they were in. It was garbage in Pirates of the Carribean and wasnt great in this either.

Seriously? If you want to point out art in MGS try the cut scene where Naomi remarks about war as a video game as it scrolls through a list of MGS titles, try Psycho Mantis, try the fact that smoking depletes HP.
Don't point to the one cut scene where they try to do way to much with the rookie, where they declare the guy who's supposed to adapt to war is actually is a 10 year vet and the explanation given to why he doesn't have nanos creates about 20 blatantly obvious plot holes.

Just because it isn't my version of art does not make the game any less valid or valuable. I am sure people love it, but we see that Roger Ebert did not. And I felt like it wasn't the strongest example of games as art to show him.

You could argue that this scene is not art and I will agree, but as far as not being entertainment...well i think it is, but maybe not on it's own because it needs context. without context there will be no immersion. A videogame cutscene on its own, particularly a mgs one, can only argue about visual aesthetics. Mgs can be debated as art and as entertainment, but as a whole imo

To be fair, this scene isn't as stupid if you knew what they were talking about (all that shit about nanomachines probably flew over Ebert's head.) And the action's pretty cool. The proposal itself sucked, but I loved how Meryl was like "no bitch, YOU marry ME."
Still, whoever showed this to Ebert has made an embarrassment out of both Metal Gear fans and gaming overall. Especially since this is, story-wise, the worst games in the series (besides MG1.)
He SHOULD have just told him to play MGS2.

@DirectorSmiley Really, you can't just take one scene out of the whole thing and say it perfectly represents the game or movie. For example, the part where Snake fist-fights Liquid on top of REX in MGS1 doesn't carry any weight unless you know about LET, the "inferiority vs superiority" bs, and all that other shit. Then you see the point, and it becomes epic. Same with Sniper Wolf's death. You need to build up hatred for her so you feel like an ass when you hear her back/sob-story.

@Gunkspray Couldn't agree more. And I love Metal Gear Solid. The whole of a video game is not art. The individual components can function as art. The character designs can be art. The music can be art. The story behind it can be art. However, the sum of all parts are to movies what a tofu burger is to meat. The elements that compose it feel like the real thing, but it is really just hill of beans masquerading as meat.
If this were a scene in Epic Movie, the complaints would be numerous.

i found it a little funny that they'd propose. then again, i guess it's probable. i heard that people who have dangerous jobs talk very casually in the face of danger. mostly likely that it's probably to calm their nerves, but it still seems really cool as if they don't care. xD
