In those days it was very risky to play live on TV--it was easy to have a third-rate production because the 'pro's of the day weren't very 'pro'. I liked the effort here because it was much like plugging in at some local high school and setting up without knowing how the mix sounds--they just hit it without being sorted out, and they STILL sounded good! This is just them playing their song in one live take--risky, but excellent!
@Beatlesrevolution999 good god man calm down!! lol, you don't have to go back that far, ok! i was born in "54 and I enjoyed all this music. but then i was "weened" on rock and roll... :)
@RankielGuitar nobody deserves dislikes. think about it. if one doesn't happen to like the channel he is on, then leave and let the rest of us enjoy it. right? :)
@m1kewithaone yeah.... I couldn't agree with you more... but don't tell that to ME, I know that... tell it to others; I never disliked a video because I never had to see crap I didn't like ;)
The interview at the end is obviously way later. Brian is getting his facts a little mixed up about the song. Must have been after his first break down.
Really nice footage. Great posting. I agree with John .. the boys sound very tight in their harmonies on-stage .. but Mike it too flat on the lead. The TV guys set the sound-system up ineptly .. Denny's clubbing drum-beat tends to be too loud in the mix, which overshadows some of the guitar work. But, by god, at this time in 1964, Brian sure had a beautiful falsetto. And, in the close-up shots, he damn-well made it look so bloody EASY to produce that high voice .. so gifted.
@m1kewithaone Brian had a nervous breakdown on a flight to Houston on Dec. 23, 1964. He battled many personal issues from that point on for many years. Currently, he is doing fine and touring regularly, although he said he's going to retire at the end of the year.
@debbiedamooseful : .. "back then recording was just a little bit different .. ". You don't say. Listen love, I'm 57, you're 60 y.o. I'm already soundly familiar with what you say. And, oh, by the way, I've been a BB/BW fanatic since 1965 .. so I do love it, no matter how imperfect the on-stage reproduction quality. BW's in-studio production skills, by comparison, were peerless for the day.
wow, I can't believe I never saw this performance before. It so clear sounding and I just love live Beach Boys from the mid-sixties! Thanks so much for the upload.
This LIVE version is so much more enjoyable than th other video around wherre the studio audio was dubbed in. I love live performances, warts and all !!!
There is another live video available- the "Lost Concert" version. However, if you can, hear the "Live in Sacramento" bootleg, where they really rip thru it, and Carl's Jag is reverbed up to the max.
Thanks,I have the so-called "Lost Concert". It's cool, as they were still so wet behind the ears. It's amazing to me when I watch the 1980 Knebworth concert, where Carl really lets that guitar intro get ballsy. He and Dennis really looked like they liked that. In these very early days, the guitar playing was very 'shy' and soft. Then again, they were described as a 'vocal group'.
You're right, though I actually prefer the "surf" sound of a reverbed Jaguar to the fuzzy "grunge" tone he used later- to me it's the sound of the original Beach Boys. Have you heard/got the TAMI show performance? They're less shy on that!
Beach Boys performance ever filmed. Carl had already started playing the Rickenbacker 12-string for that show ( it was featured on the on the studio version of Dance, Dance, Dance which they played that night). BW was there and was awsome. Actually. i love BOTH the guitar sound types. Different eras. Mike's tribute band has it toned done again. jhp
On this date in 1964 {Feb. 15th} "Fun, Fun, Fun" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it would peak at #5 and spent 11 weeks in the Top 100
Made it to #4 in the Philippines and to #3 in Hong Kong
B/side was "Why Do Fools Fall In Love"
Covered by The Surfriders, The Carpenters, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and dino, Desi, & Billy
The Beach Boys next release following this record became their first #1 record, "I Get Around"...

mike love must have started going bald when he was like 12 years old..no wonder he was such a miserable unhappy mean spirited guy
the sound engineer on the steve allen show sucked balls
the sound on the ed sullivan show was far superior
dennis wilson at this point in time sucked mule balls as a drummer....
ChiroQuacker 2 months ago
Right before Mike starts singing you can see (and hear) Brian tell Dennis to "pick it up." As soon as Dennis came in, the song started dragging.
