I wish there is a new golden era of wrestling in the future, very unlikely, with the crap soap opera, sports entertainment shit, we get from WWE and TNA
@HandsomeMs1 I think one of wrasslins biggest problems is that now days you can turn on tv and watch a real fight. After you watch mma its really hard to watch pro wrestling. Add that fact in with the shit product wwe and tna are putting out the lame wrestlers out there today and your god damn right cm punk is on that list too and the short attention span feuds and there is just no reason to watch it.
@xxspliffsmokexx Actually, after Brock Lesnar went into MMA, A LOT of people stopped taking it that seriously. Pro wrestling is entertainment, for certain, and not a good product now compared to back then... but some people actually want to know the Wrestlers. There are several guys who are wrestlers who also participated in MMA (Alberto Del Rio for one), and they have egos that make you hate them almost on sight... and trust me, they are not all that either.
I have heard it from someone that he was supposed to be in Hogan's place though he messed it up. Hayes definitely had the ability to draw people as a World Champion.
you know, I never agreed that people calling Hayes a racist, I actually think its more due to him living in the South and the fact I actually believe that Hayes thinks he's black, I think Booker T even believes in that as well as mentioned that in an interview
@ShootStyleZombie I also see it as Hayes liking his drink and like some people who like to drink...you can't control what you say...or don't even realize what your saying.
I never got to see much of the Freebirds back in the day but that was a hell of a good promo there.... classic, Micheal Hayes could cut one hell of a promo.
I remember this ringside interview. I was watching it live on an edition of WCW on a Saturday afternoon. I believe this was leading up to Hayes' one-on-one matchup with Flair eventually down the road. Fantastic memories!
@TheMadStork83 No wrestling promotion shoves anything down anyones throat. You act as if you not watching would kill you. You make the choice to tune in. Just quit watching and quit bitching. Back in the day when this footage was shot I'm sure the older people hated this stuff. But they too had the choice to not watch.
@RogPnn - Hayes was a very good draw. Huge draw in WCCW. Take a look at the attendance #'s. Good draw in FLA as well. Really one of the more underappreciated wrestlers IMO.
@RogPnn I agree.. Hayes isn't in Flair's league, even Hayes would agree with that - but what everyone knows is that Hayes drew money in his day.. he made a mint with the Von Erics based on the fact that he was a great talker and a genius when it came to wrestling storylines and techniques - he was the guy who started to use rock music as entrance music !!
I always enjoyed the commentary of Tony Servonte and David Crockett. I always thought they were very convincing. I loved it when Crockett said, "Did you see the look on his face?" Of all the wrestling promotions, I think that Crockett put together the best product.
I never liked the free birds that much but some of their matches were great to watch. The hype and spiel was done very well. Not to mention that if it were not for the free birds in their more creative days making a band and doing their own music as well and tributes for their entrances and then for the vast majority using recordings of such.... there would be no vast plethora of "intros" out there in the biz today. May perhaps there would be no intros at all. We own them that respect.

Mark Henry is lucky to even have a job with the WWE. The guy has been on the roster for over a decade now & he has never, ever gotten over or been able to have a decent series of matches.

@timg138 im with cha dude i lost a lotta respect for Hayes when i heard the comments he made about well you know and he was an overrated wrestler. Gordy and Roberts picked up the slack while he talked all day
The Freebirds were awesome. Bam Bam was the greatest natural athlete going, his punches were classic, lock, load, and hammer away. Michael Hayes' spring over the corner rope, prance across the ring and up on the ropes only to be astonished that the crowd wasn't in love with him....all to either Freebird or badstreet...it just don't get any better.
You guys should be talking smack about either one of these guys. Flair is the man but, Hayes was great in his time. The Freebrds and Von Erichs fued was one of the best ever. What made it so great was how rotten the Freebirds were. You could only wish to have guys as good as Hayes was. One thing is for sure, no one will ever even come close to Flair.
I wish JCP and World Class worked together to bring the Von Erichs and the other 2 Freebirds to WCW. I assume Fritz didn't want his boys leaving Dallas for a long time. What a shame it didn't happen. A lot of the old school promoters like Fritz, and Don Owen started not to trust Crockett because of his own national push to disolve the territories. Hayes and Tommy Rich were instantly gone after this segment, and Crockett became his own "NWA".
hayes is the best, you dont know shit. he did the best interviews and he was the "david lee roth" of wrestling. and chics were all over him for a reason.

where is jcp now? silence hahahahah get the fuck outta here with that crap, wwe is the ruler of the world word to sid hahaha,i'm still a fan of all wrestling but you cats need to quit all that shit cause if they really knew how to do business they'd be around still yell
I thought Hayes would have been a more believable champion then Garvin. If you remember, the gimmick that they used was have Ric Flair wrestle a different wrestler every day for 30 days - and Ron Garvin fought and defeated Flair on the 30th day. Other then have a good right hand (cause he had some amateur boxing exp) Garvin was very forgettable.
I recently read that Garvin wasn't the 1st choice to win the title from Flair. It was offered to a few others who turned it down, because it was already known that the title change was going to be a temporary one. Starcade 87 was going to be JCP's 1st ppv and Crocket wanted Flair to win back the title there. Garvin being 42 at the time realized that this might be his only chance to win the belt, so he accepted.
It doesn't make sense to me either. At the time the NWA belt was considered the top title in the industry, you would think that anyone would want it. Even for a short time.
I think puttin gthe title on Windham, would've been better then having Garvin have the title. Freebirds and Horsemen would've been a good feud, but they never had it on any big cards, which kinda sucked! WWF has and always will suck, it's to bad they're the only show in town. Whenever Flair retires I'm done watching. I have so much classic wrestling that, that's what I enjoy watching, the glory days, as oppsed to the shit they offer now!
Do you have the match, that they were just showing with Flair in the ring. JCP was way better then WWF, but they didin't know how to market their stuff, subsequently that led to no money, in 87 when the Nwa was having their annual Starrcade, WWF held the survivor series so they made fans choose which one. That killed Jcp
Actually, it was even worse- McMahon told PPV companies that if they carried Starrcade, they couldn't carry the Survivor Series OR the next Wrestlemania, which at the time was a huge moneymaker. It was dirty, but then the 1st Clash of the Champions aired on free TV while Wrestlemania IV was on PPV, killing the PPV numbers for McMahon.
i agree hayes could've carried the nwa world title no doubt.i remember one promo where ric flair called hayes"the poor man's ric flair". flair is funny as hell. but don't sleep on ron garvin,he was the man. the birds and the horsemen did have a couple matches but you could tell that crockett was favorimg the horsemen. soon after that bam bam & buddy left and it was just hayes who started teaming with jimmy garvin.
I couldn't disagree with you more. I think Hayes would have been a much better choice to hotshot the title to than Ron Garvin. Of course, I've been saying this forever. His promos, at the time, were top notch. Sure it was a lot of rhyming and jive talking, but it got over well. Besides that, he could wrestle a good match, even outside tag compition.
And don't discredit World Class. When the Freebirds were fueding with the Von Erichs, World Class was putting on better television than WWF or JCP. My opinion, of course.
Huh, what? I love World Class, I love JCP, and I love WWF Circa 1986;but how can you say Michael Hayes wouldn't make a believable Champion outside of Texas in one post, and then say World Class was better then WWF, but not better then JCP; especially since, at the time WWF was eating JCP Lunch.
Oh, I know. I still think Hayes would have been a better choice at the time (I think he was still face then). The Garvin title run never made good sense to me.
Michael Hayes was always such a great promo.

World Championship Mullets.
I believe the Freebirds originated from Bad Haircut Street, U.S.A.

Ron Garvin was a good wrestler but he did'nt have much of a persona.
JustinAwe07 4 years ago 2
but he had a right hand!
danachonda 4 years ago 2

HARRYBUTOCKS 2 years ago
Garvin disputes that and it doesn't make sense. His feud with Flair came directly out of Flair's feud with his brother that summer.
Davidhgi 2 years ago
It doesn't make sense to me either. At the time the NWA belt was considered the top title in the industry, you would think that anyone would want it. Even for a short time.
HARRYBUTOCKS 2 years ago
The freebirds were awesome for two reasons 1) they had charisma and also because they were apart of wrestling when it was exciting!!!!
jackhandle70 4 years ago
Hayes wasn't around very long WCW after this segment. He worked a match at the Omni against Flair and he went back to Texas and the AWA.
VolumedMusicMan 4 years ago
I think puttin gthe title on Windham, would've been better then having Garvin have the title. Freebirds and Horsemen would've been a good feud, but they never had it on any big cards, which kinda sucked! WWF has and always will suck, it's to bad they're the only show in town. Whenever Flair retires I'm done watching. I have so much classic wrestling that, that's what I enjoy watching, the glory days, as oppsed to the shit they offer now!
ed2kou1 4 years ago 4
Do you have the match, that they were just showing with Flair in the ring. JCP was way better then WWF, but they didin't know how to market their stuff, subsequently that led to no money, in 87 when the Nwa was having their annual Starrcade, WWF held the survivor series so they made fans choose which one. That killed Jcp
ed2kou1 4 years ago
Actually, it was even worse- McMahon told PPV companies that if they carried Starrcade, they couldn't carry the Survivor Series OR the next Wrestlemania, which at the time was a huge moneymaker. It was dirty, but then the 1st Clash of the Champions aired on free TV while Wrestlemania IV was on PPV, killing the PPV numbers for McMahon.

Yeah your right.
ed2kou1 4 years ago
there was NEVER a time in the 80's where wwf was putting on better tv than jcp,so you can go kiss a bull's ass with that
blaknyte08 4 years ago 4
i agree hayes could've carried the nwa world title no doubt.i remember one promo where ric flair called hayes"the poor man's ric flair". flair is funny as hell. but don't sleep on ron garvin,he was the man. the birds and the horsemen did have a couple matches but you could tell that crockett was favorimg the horsemen. soon after that bam bam & buddy left and it was just hayes who started teaming with jimmy garvin.
blaknyte08 4 years ago
Hayes looks rough in this promo. Nobody in their right mind would really think Hayes was NWA champion material. He was a mid carder outside of Texas.
hairbandfan 4 years ago
I couldn't disagree with you more. I think Hayes would have been a much better choice to hotshot the title to than Ron Garvin. Of course, I've been saying this forever. His promos, at the time, were top notch. Sure it was a lot of rhyming and jive talking, but it got over well. Besides that, he could wrestle a good match, even outside tag compition.
timg138 4 years ago
And don't discredit World Class. When the Freebirds were fueding with the Von Erichs, World Class was putting on better television than WWF or JCP. My opinion, of course.
timg138 4 years ago
World class was good better than wwf but not as good as JCP 1986.
hairbandfan 4 years ago
Fiendishfoe666 4 years ago
Wrong timeline this was 1985 Garvin was late 1987.
hairbandfan 4 years ago
Oh, I know. I still think Hayes would have been a better choice at the time (I think he was still face then). The Garvin title run never made good sense to me.
timg138 4 years ago
I was never big on Ronny Garvin either I would have
rather seen them give Terry Gordy a run with the
belt & maybe set up a Freebird vs Four Horsemen
fued.
