It is NOT a bad thing to have political parties. Parties identify their members as being pro-this, anti-that, etc. This gives people a good beginning as they try to grasp the politics that we have today.

The material getting cleaned and melted vs. rocks getting crushed for traces of boxite which must then be melted and further refined. Final shipping applies to both. which requires more energy?

In Australia we also have a drought, but they tell you to wash stuff for recycling. The question is, are you doing more harm by wasting water washing the container for recycling, or by tossing the dirty container out?
For me, laziness wins out over ideology, so I do whichever is easiest.
I'm of two minds on this issue. Landfills are filling up ever-so-much faster today than they did 10 years ago. If you don't recycle, then more landfills need to be created & folks tend to have a NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) view towards landfills. So where do you put them? Also, air pollution is becoming a rampant problem pretty much everywhere & you don't want to add more if you can help it. So, there's no perfect solution that I can see to the issue. Just do whatever you think is best, I guess.
It's not just agreeing to disagree. The problems result when people not only have a different opinion about something, but try to dictate (and sometimes succeed) in forcing those values on others.

I live with a guy who, despite his claims, is staunchly against recycling as reflected in his actions. It's true the recycling of most materials generates waste and toxins. I just do it because it's easy (for me), I don't want reusable materials going into a landfill, and bauxite mining is hell on "da Earf." Anyway, I said all this so I could tell you that I groped through layers of maggots in order to recycle his innumerable beer bottles and cans. Where's my goddamn Planeteer ring?!
I only recycle cans to make a few extra bucks. The only problem is, I have over 100 pounds of cans sitting back in my garage because I'm too lazy to go get them recycled. Maybe I should just throw them away.

I just don't think it would work unless you kept the dem & rep parties as well which would be even more confusing.

I like Ron Paul too but... yes we should allow 3rd parties in the debates. Nader + Paul would get a lot more votes that way.
Prob. is with a republic is that it tends to end in gridlock a lot of the tiume.

I'm of two minds on this issue. Landfills are filling up ever-so-much faster today than they did 10 years ago. If you don't recycle, then more landfills need to be created & folks tend to have a NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) view towards landfills. So where do you put them? Also, air pollution is becoming a rampant problem pretty much everywhere & you don't want to add more if you can help it. So, there's no perfect solution that I can see to the issue. Just do whatever you think is best, I guess.

I live with a guy who, despite his claims, is staunchly against recycling as reflected in his actions. It's true the recycling of most materials generates waste and toxins. I just do it because it's easy (for me), I don't want reusable materials going into a landfill, and bauxite mining is hell on "da Earf." Anyway, I said all this so I could tell you that I groped through layers of maggots in order to recycle his innumerable beer bottles and cans. Where's my goddamn Planeteer ring?!

golfingdisaster: One problem with your theory of a universal party is there are some issues that are mutually exclusive & you won't find folks who perfectly agree on those issues. Also, people's political views can & sometimes do change like the seasons. What's hip and in-style now, won't be that way 5, 10, 20 years or more from now. How would your universal party handle that? I just don't think it would work unless you kept the dem & rep parties as well which would be even more confusing.
