Mark Hamill makes a terrific point. If a special effect doesn't move the audience, then it doesn't allow us to see the filmmaker's vision. This is filming at its most beautiful and creative form.
mark hamil tries to explain why special effects are a tool and should only be used to help tell a story. camera pans to R2-D2 who interrupts him. Lucas must have directed that shot.
"We now possess the technology to place anything a man can imagine within the reach of the camera"
It's weird he said that because with digital technology we now can create a lot more than what it was possible at that time. And today we also say the same thing he said, so I wonder what we are gonna create next.
@slipknotsouthpark Yeah the prequels are bad movies and they're not worth the money even if the 3d is great. The old ones are awesome and remaking them in 3d just for the sake of profit is a horrible idea. Does Lucas have any respect for those beautiful works of art that other people created( he didn't create the original trilogy)? So either way I'm not going to see them in 3d in cinema just so that I can fill Lucas' valet. And nor should you.
@pistonfan33 yea seriously i wana be a filmaker to make good movies with story and meaning in any setting i want, not just use CGI for the novilty like gee transformers 2 yea thanx for that piece of garbage michal bay, mark hamils probably like o.o rele did no one see this documentry...but still i loved his yoda voice at the end it was awesome
I liked Mark Hamill's conclusion at the end, that it's all about the character's (and the story for that matter) and not about the FX. And here's why the prequels failed: I didn't care for Anakin nor Padmé Amidala, they are all without depth and character. The Anakin in the prequel movies is so unappealing that I really wonder why anyone would make six movies about such a guy....
I had this on video when I was a kid too...legendary! Watched the vhs tape until the sound went, and then just provided my own sound. Thanks for this.
you are DEAD wrong about the prequels! The Midichlorians underscores why the Jedis fail. They based it all on biology and not the individuals strong character. Lucas knew what he was doing and it works if you pay attention and are not a dummy. The political stuff was to show how evil and manipulative
@SteveVader101 I saw them and for the most part they aren`t good. Subtle and serious caracter aren`t flat or 1 dimensional, in fac they can be deepee, and many of his alternative srategies sre ju7st other possibilitties you vcan find in any situation but whivh weren`t much better options and he actually criticises the Jedi for first defending their citizens and only then atracking and not beting on 1 horse, he suggests they severly lower teir defenses for the posibility to capture Grievous.
Everything Mark said was contradicted in the prequels.
No story that moves us, people we care about, just sterile lifeless backgrounds, midichlorians an unfunny comic relief charecter, and some confusing stupid plot about trades and politics. zzzzzzzz
Lucas acted like a retard w/ a new computer just playing around with it to see what it could do.
But as much as i hate George sometimes, we are all gonna be sad when he leaves us.
Mark Hamill so nice, funny and unpretending in this video... I know I sound like an old crank, but I can't imagine a "hot young star" of today doing the same thing.
this makes me want so much to become a film maker... its also inspiring to see how special effects were made without the help of a computer, it required so much more imagination than just sitting in front of a pc and animate, it involved many other things, i wished computer animation complemented stop motion and other older effects tecniques
It wasn't for insurance purposes; it was because mark hamill couldn't do those flips lol

That speech at the end, how ironic :P Maybe they all subconsciously knew what was going to happen in e few decades.

so much work and effort put into special effects....but then, cgi uses just as much work and effort...several days of work for a 5 second shot

The old special effects looks MORE realistic, than stupid CGI animation!!!!!!!

Isn't it ironic that a puppet has far more personality then even the best CGI they farted out in all of the prequels?

Everything Mark Hamill said at the end of the video goes completely against everything the new trilogy stands for and he's right.
