There was this one video I saw with some IDs of channel 8, and the first theme noise would of made much better then the freaking 1050Hz attention tone. I hate how they have to do live tests weekly, even worse, I used to have Comcast, and whenever I stood up late watching Disney Channel (Only good thing around) the freakin' thing would wake up, my screen would turn black, and I'd fly to my TV and pound my finger into the power button. Gah. SAME sounds horrible too.
last year i watched storm chasers where in one part the had those attention signals, and that night at 6:00, there was a F*CKING EAS TEST IN MY BEDROOM!!!!!
I complained to both the FCC and to Time Warner cable, also told them no one pays any attention to it anymore and just mutes their TV. Their excuse was that it is controlled by each individual station. So when you sleep with the TV on like I do, keep the remote where you can find it fast and kill the sound. With luck we won't miss a real alert and die!
I thought the test was run once a month, not weekly. Each station that runs the test over ride everything else.
Most of the time the EAS screen looks just as terrifying as the sound. This one isnt that bad, but I swear that is the creepiest looking number 3 that I have ever seen.
Not Scary just really jarring. And one of the downsides to DTV is that you can no longer change the channel from it. Next thing you know they'll have your TV turning on just for the test.
I am really surprised that there are so many videos of this. I am on youtube mobile, so I'm really scared that I might click on one of them. Anyway, we all need to write letters and e-mails to the FCC and suggest that they change the sound so it's not so scary...
@SHMCrudhedd In theory, that's a good idea, but the tones are supposed to be scary so they grab people's attention. Also, these are the same tones from the EBS, our former national emergency system (the EAS wasn't instated until about 1990).
I thought I was the only won who was terrified of these things. Even as a child. Especially after 9/11 I use to think it was the end of the world when I heard these noises.
I've hated these all my life.I sometimes wake up because I hear the noise in my sleep, and I plug my ears the rest of the time.Tht's why I like to sleep with the karaoke machine or the TV on.But we have a wheather alert radio. When that sounds off, scares the crap outta me the same way only I'm scared more of the EAS beep and the voice.I wish they would not use those!
I was listening carefully to the talking in the background - in the beginning there's a woman going "Whatever you're crying about now, stop it." Really freaky!
Wonder if there's a radio station that's in almost the same area as this TV station. Could be interference from antennas... in the Twin Cities, I can actually hear AM radio on my landline phones!
It always happens to me when I was sleeping, the Emergency Alert System Test (EAS) would go off and that would always wake me up, man that test is annoying, and the alert tone too.
First, nothing but silence, then those data bursts (like seven in a row!) then another long silence (during which you can hear muted voices in the background), then Bob Tracey's voice coming out of nowhere. Brrr!
haha, that announcer dude sounds like the guy on the monorail at disneyland :) i think they do that deliberately to make everyone happy again after the shock they get when it goes off :)
I know but its so freaky to wake up to it when the EAS runs test it makes me sick to my stomach and scares me when i wake up to it in the middle of the night. Can't it just be like a sirin or a long beep not a scrapy, scratchy, spine tingling, gut wrenching noise? You know scary. Please respond Thanks
I agree with you, the (EAS) test with the alert tone, it would always wake me up in the middle of the night and in the morning hours, it gets annoying when the (EAS) test goes off at like 5 or 6 times, when I woke up to that, man that test is annoying.
It's actually a digital information burst. When the alert is first sent out by the originating station, the burst contains information about where the emergency is located (so only local stations carry the EAS) and what kind of emergency it is. It's repeated three times in case of poor reception.
@Eaglezfan5 That's the idea, something that you will almost bound to never hear it anywhere else, and it's so annoying that you are bound to notice it.
(Side note, anyone have a clue how you would describe this sound in words.
That's very clever. That make a sound thats guaranteed to get peoples attention, no matter what the person is doing, even sleeping, in an event of an emergency. I wonder who come up with that sound.
Which one? WAVY's? I think so... they usually run it on Wednesdays between 10-noon, I'll try to catch it. I think it was blue with silver/white letters. Haven't seen it in a while so I'm not entirely sure.
Weekly Test today, saw it
