OK, so you are in a back flip, flipping in the air, to change that to a front flip your "barrel roll" your body while flipping ... best way for you to see it is at 1:40 in this video, its very quick but you can see how he rolls himself [as a dog would roll over] in the air... :)

I did gymnastics for almost 10 years, I also skydive for under a year. In freefall I have tried some gymnastics maneuvers and it is completely different to doing it on the floor etc, but regards to base jumping. I'd say it would require a little under a year of full time practise on the gymnastics front to do this. But I could be wrong, I haven't base jumped before.

The chance of the canopy not opening at all is quite unlikely but it can still happen. Most danger in BASE lies in other places like line twists on opening, off heading openings, wall strikes under canopy, wall strikes while in free fall and the list goes on. A typical BASE rig would cost around $3500 (less expensive than a skydiving rig since there is no reserve or AAD) ****FYI don't even think about BASE jumping until taking up skydiving first****
