I'm amazed that during the recession, this wasn't one of the areas that would be redeveloped. It would create thousands of jobs and would also leave permanent jobs once the area was redeveloped (commercial, retail, etc).
developing that area would mean spending money on a place that has left well enough alone, which would be irresponsible at a time like this. if we were to do it at a better time in our economy, that may be a different story. but not now.
The point needs to be redeveloped, but not under SunCal's plan. We need more jobs in alameda - re-use the base for sustainable energy research and development - create jobs at a broad range of incomes, not just lower-paying retail jobs the way SunCal's plans do. Vote No on measure B.
Upon further review the suncal proposal is a bad one. totally underfunded, with property taxes being raised to fill in the gaps. nice design - bad financial plan. just raised property taxes in alameda for schools, the damn hospital (which is going to close anyway) and just about everything in this town you can think of. toxic clean up will cost more than people realize, and this town won't put up with another property tax hike. which is why many people are now coming out against it.
It's about to get worse. Alameda is run by a Good 'Ole Boy Network. The network is about to get the city council to give away $2 million of the $3.4 million designated funds from measure WW. Some of that money would have been going towards the base (i.e. the Gym and other walking trails). But the real problem with Base development is the Navy. That land is way more contaminated than people realize. Yes, they are gone, but they still get a say. Who wants to pay for that nuclear clean up?
Very sad... I was stationed at NAS Alameda w/ the Marine Corps security force Co. from 1985-87.
NAS Alameda wasa thriving city within a city. What a waste...

SunCal was rejected because ONE it was expensive and TWO the ground they would be working on was supposedly contaminated.

The base closed in 1997. I was stationed there 1981-83 on the USS Kansas City (AOR 3).

It's time to celebrate. The voters of Alameda OVERWHELMINGLY disagree and voted NO by 86% to your plan..

You mean tear it up and ruin it. It's a historic place that should be left alone. Turn it into a park...
