Things you need (in order): 1. 1 year supply food for EACH person in household (water if you do not have your own well) 2. clothing needs for next 6 months. 3. deodorant, TP, misc grocery items 4. source of wind/solar/wood for heat/work 5. guns, ammo, ammo, ammo 6. things to trade: coffee, booze, ammo,etc 7. silver 8. gold, palladium, platinum I actually have a more thorough list too large for here.

The real problem isn't the cost, it is the mindset. Think of the generation that survived the depression. Chances are, your grandparents had a small garden and did quite a bit of canning. Only exception would be is if they live in a large city.

Younger generations thought them crazy to can vegetables they would throw out in 2 years. Next year people will be begging for less. They also did not trust the banks.

They didn't buy on credit.

They were practical.

Preparation is essential. I wouldn't waste too much money on gold or silver, have some but a lot won't be necessary. Learn a skill and stock up on real supplies, food, essentials. Practice survival techniques, urban or rural depending on where you live.
