i'm using this for 2nd dan as in shito ryu we're supposed to pick for second dan 3 katas to learn from each of the masters. I am sure bassai dai we need to know, and 2 others.
crap... yesterday i was practicing this kata and i screwed up at the very first movement (didn't do it)... and the last 2... (did them opposite sides, lol)... and the sensei didn't tell me i was wrong. XD
In Japan, Rohai is taught at the black belt level. The techniques seem basic; many hidden techinques are lethal. The non-lethals, blind, maim, permanently damage the lymphatic system, and manipulate the opponent to a position where a lethal technique can be "administered"
In my dojo this is taught to brown belts. Unfortunately, it is one of the few I can reliably remember, even though it is slightly different from the one shown.
There are several Katas called Rohai. This one is the one which was passed on by Matsumura, whose favourite Kata was Bassai. So it could be that be gave his Version of this Kata a Bassai touch.
good postings one and all, I would like to meet all of you for an wxchange of thechnique, I myself have done kobayashi, matsubayashi , matsumura seito, and shobayasin...and by all means i still have a lot to learn from my previous training od forty three years
Er...I learned this kata as Koshiki no Rohai, not Matsumura... Is that a typing error, or what ? I couldn't believe my sensei would be wrong, but try to convince me :D
Very nice kata by the way. Very difficult to keep one's balance on the one-legged blocks, though. (but I'm a beginner :D)
I do the Matsumora no rohai and are few differences, seem the same. It is a very beautifull kata I executed this just yesterday in a regional tournment. very very good kata
Really, it's just one of the Tommari series of katas. The one I've used for my Yondan test was Yommari Bassai. Matsumura no Rohaicombines the Rohai movements with the base Tommari kata. I need to learn Matsumura Bassai for my go dan test in 2012.
Koshiki refers to the classical or "old version" of the kata. It's not a persons' name. Generally speaking, the original version that a kata, as it was originally conceieved and taught way back when, is the Koshiki version. Other masters along the way alter them in small ways to suit or better match their body types or teaching philosophies and thus put their name stamp on them.
Yes, exactly. I haven't seen MasterSam's Koshiki Rohai, but, since Matsumura is considered the one who invented Rohai, then I am assuming that it is one in the same kata. His instructor probably just refered to it as Koshiki Rohai for simplicity's sake. Might also be because he teaches all 3 of the Rohai forms and this one is considered the original. Most of the versions I see these days are within a few techniques and moves of what is considered the original. Hard to tell at this point tho.

Depends on the school, it seems. Some shito schools require up to Pinan Nidan, others Pinan Shodan.

In Japan, this kata is usually taught to black belt holders. I don't know about North America or any other places.

@km0510 In the style I study (Shorin-ken under Hiroyuki Hamada of the Dai Nippon Butokukai), it is a 4th Kyu blue belt kata.

It's not a mistake, this is Rohai by Matsumura and you learned Rohai by Koshiki... There are different versions.

They all come from a root rohai kata. So it's possible that Koshiki learned it through a Matsumura line.
I haven't heard of Koshiki before, but Matsumura was THE karateka in mid 1800's Okinawa, so it's likely that he's the original

Ah... so the "ko" in koshiki is the same as the "ko" in koryu.
How do we know that this is an original or old style kata then? What is the lineage? Any idea?
