If you have to leave a dog alone, start by getting him/her used to the idea gradually, by leaving them in a room for longer periods at a time. Then when you leave, give them your old t-shirt to play with so they have your scent and also loads of toys.
I have a Labradoodle and will leave him on occassion for 4 - 5hours max. Longer periods are possible but you may need somebody to come in let them out for the loo.
@gkotelova Teaching your dog how to play dead will take some time. When your dog does any natural dog behavior such as lying on his back, you would issue a command and say 'Play dead!' or signal a hand gesture while saying 'Bang!'. At first, he'll tilt his head, raise his ears, and look at you like he has no clue what you are doing. But once you praise him and reward him with a treat, he'll start associating that behavior with that command.
