  • I love it, it's just beautiful

  • if this does not make you cry, you have no heart...

  • @pieternooten it gives me the chills, that's for sure.

  • th best versionis zofia kilanowicz sopran!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • bellissima canzone

  • I heard this performed by the Epsicopal/Anglican choir of St. James in the City (Los Angeles) as part of their Evensong service on Sunday May 8th, 2011. It was sublime in a perfect setting...the entire congregation sat in frozen silence as this piece played out. It was so beautiful with an ending sung at this tempo..an ending that did not want to end. Gorecki IMHO is a genius in his deliberate use of silence and nuance creating enormous atmospheres that sweep up the listener/choir/cities.

  • Translated lyrics, second part:

Perhaps the poor child/Lies in a rough ditch/and instead he could have been/lying in his warm bed

Oh, sing for him/God's little song-birds/Since his mother/Cannot find him

And you, God's little flowers/May you blossom all around/So that my son/May sleep happily

  • Translated lyrics:

Where has he gone/My dearest son?/Perhaps during the uprising/The cruel enemy killed him

Ah, you bad people/In the name of God, the most Holy/Tell me, why did you kill

    My son?

Never again/Will I have his support/Even if I cry/My old eyes out/Were my bitter tears

to create another River Oder/They would not restore to life/My son

He lies in his grave/and I know not where/Though I keep asking people/Everywhere

  • I haven't even listened to a minute of the song and i'm already crying...i have no idea what it means too...it is so beautiful and sad

    Magnificent :)

  • I'm sorry, I'm a Polish-American who does not know Polish. hussar2007 - could you provide an English (or French) translation of the lyrics? I am completely entranced by this music that I've never heard before.

  • rip mate r i p

  • Yes, 3st...you know..like Thirst.

  • Goodbye Henryk, you'll always be a huge inspiration.

  • R.I.P. Henryk Górecki - His 4th Symphony was due to be played for the first time in London this year. Sadly his ill health prevented this.

  • Rip

  • HMG RIP +

  • Uwielbiam te symfonię.

  • Thanks for posting but who is the soprano, conductor, name of the orchestra, and album and year or recording?

  • @ABOCHITO Dawn Upshaw - David Zimmer - London Sinfonietta - Symphony No. 3 - 1992

  • 3st lol

  • 3st?

  • A very nice alternative to Dawn Upshaw's famous version. Thanks for posting this.

  • Po prostu brakuje slow by opisac ogromy smutek i zarazem niebywale piekno tej symfonii. Glos Zofii Kilanowicz unosi wprost w przestworza swoja delikatnoscia i cierpieniem. To kazanie za kadym razem mnie gleboko wzrusza. Gdybym tylko ja byla w stanie oddac spiewem te smutne slowa, nie chcailabym juz nic wiecej od zycia.

  • I think the singer is Dawn Upshaw..

  • This is Gorecki best known composition and his stroke of genius.

Those who find it boring need to go listen to top 40 BS intended for the brain dead masses.

    Known to us as noise.

  • haha ^^

  • @bsod4u2 I beg to differ, noise is something much more distinguished than 'popular culture', I would be pleased if such a distinction were made between discordant sounds and auditory trash as I happen to enjoy the former and despise the latter alongside you.

  • Which statue is that in the picture?

  • Who is singing in this recording?

  • @keleheris

A Polish soprano singer called Zofia Kilanowicz; recorded in 1993

  • ay guitar tabs ? :) I am just kidding :) Actually its nice piece ... but does anyone not consider it just a bit to repetetive ? The piece starts of with bascially a ten second melody repeated for 5 minutes. I guess our ears like repetition. But is this is a new technique in classical music ?

  • Yes, this technique is called Minimalism. Gorecki's style was known as "holy minimalism". You can look it up in wikipedia.

  • Thanks ! Just been listening to Avro Part who is amazing.

  • Ej, cwierkejcie mu tam, wy ptosecki boze, kiedy mamulicka znalezc go nie moze. A ty, boze kwiecie, kwitnijze w okolo, niech sie synockowi choc lezy wesolo Kajze mi sie podziol moj synocek mily? Pewnie go w powstaniu zle wrogi zabily.
  • This verse instead of the last one above:

    Wy niedobrzy ludzie,

    dlo Boga swietego

    cemuscie zabili

    synocka mojego?

  • Ní chluinim fuiaim lachan ná gé ann,

ná fiolar ag éamh sois cuain,

ná fiú na mbeacha chun saothair

thabharfadh mil agus céir don tslua.

Níl ceol binn milis na n-éan ann

le hamharc an lae a dhul uainn,

náan chuaichín i mbarra na ngéag ann,

ós í chuirfeadh an saol chun suain.

  • deas

  • @oberones Maith an fhear !

  • amazing...i personnally think that the best version is the one by David Zimmermann with Dawn Upshaw...

  • I agree, but it has made a mysterious disappearance here.

  • I totally agree man

  • do you mean Zinman?

  • the best version is zofia kilianowicz sopran

  • Agreed!

  • less than 30 classical songs in my collection

the best of which are in my 'classical music' playlist at my home page

plenty of other stuff there too

  • yes its my one of the best claasic song ever i always craing when i hear this

  • Very touching.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • I too prefer the nonesuch recording, however any recording of the track is stunning. The

3rd symphony in it's entirety is one of the most moving forms of art i've ever encountered.

  • This is a wonderful piece of music. However, you have not identified it correctly. It is the last half of the 3rd Movement, Lento Cantabile-semplice, not the 2nd movement, Lento e Largo. The 3rd movement (which in its entirety is about 16-17 minutes long) is based on a 19th century Polish folk song about a mother who mourns for her son, who was killed in battle. I prefer the Elektra Nonesuch recording which features Dawn Upshaw and the London Sinfonietta, because it is played at a slower tempo.

  • yes but the best version is zofia kilianowicz sopran and antoni witt in katowice symphony! nexos

  • Agreed!

  • you mentioned the polish folk song ... do u know the name of this song ?

  • Beautiful.
