I'm new 2 Maya, but I think that the only export method is photos. From there I would import into something like adobe ae as a frame by frame sequence. Hope that explains :)
I am in my first year of university and I'm studying Digital Animation. I will be on completion putting all my animations onto Youtube. Even though I only have Animation created on Maya so far there are more coming.
I would really appreciate if people would subscribe to my channel or even just give me some constructive comments about them so i am able to enhance my skills.
Your walking cycles are really good. I'm taking an Animation class this year. (sophomore in high school) & right now I'm doing a huge animation clip of a pop-tart walking (Maya 8,5). Not as easy as it looks! Do you have any tips or anything?
It's not bad i am planning to start college next year in january 2011 i am starting in miami dade and i heard that it was a four year course plus i heard MAYA was one of the programs that i would learn but crap this looks good no doubt that i am gonna need to brush up on my math skills plus get a better job other than the crappy job i had before!!!
sweet im taking a 3d modeling & animation class in high school next year because we are a technology based school and they teach maya so do you think i will be able to produce something like this at the end of the year?
Blender is very good. I love the interface and everything, and have grown attached to it. When I'm older, I might have enough money to get Maya. I want to make a game one day (really good) for free.
Blender is good, especially for independent projects. But keep in mind that if you ever plan on getting a job doing 3D work, you will have to learn other professional programs such as Maya, 3dsMax, etc. There are very few studios that use Blender in production.
@ArmyTank00 I tried blender, but I couldn't understand it! I'm pretty good with c++ and flash, but when it comes to blender, I cannot. Don't you have to know Python to program games with it?
nah...i think blender is capable of doing the same quality...just check out "creature factory video"...put those same graphics on a film and bam! is just that not a lot of people know how to use blender good enough..just wait and see how good it will get in 3-5 years.. its gonna be on the top
sorry..but not quite...not just cuz a soft is free doesnt mean its cheap.... blender has alot to offer i mean A LOT!! like FAKKKK ALOT!! u can compare it to proffesional software!! what other free soft can u find that has that much competition?....but it does have limitations though not concerning big problems..dont underestimate blender
It's not as hard as what people think. The basics of Maya like Box Modelling are really easy to learn, for you usually always use the same tools (translations, rotations, scales, extrusions, split polygons, ...). You can find really useful tutorials all over the internet, even buy a book if you want to go further and do great stuff in no time if you stick to it regularly. Experience will make the difference :)
Check at my "Making of Couette" if you want more details !
For animation, it is very important that you learn the principles of 2D animation first. They still apply in 3D. So get yourself Richard Williams' Animation Survival Kit (it's a great book, will teach you many things). Once you've learned about frames, timing, arcs, overlapping action, follow-through, keys and inbetweens, then you can start doing 3D animation.
okay:D ive just started to use 3ds max and im a bit confused if maya was easier to learn or different looking in movies..but i guess not.. btw whats the difference between maya and 3ds max?
I use 3ds max and Maya, but I've been using max since I was 13, so i'm more comfortable with max. They're both great pieces of software. But maya is much harder to learn.
If you want a comparison. You can search google for "3ds max comparison table"
Hey, I don't know if anyone can help me out with a question that I have, but I was wondering if you could tell me what each 3D program is used for, like if they all have different uses or something. Like they have 3ds Max and Maya, and other programs like Blender and 4D studio. Are they all primarily used for the same thing, or does each thing used for something else, i.e. Movies, video games, etc.... ?
Blender is freeware, and typically used for independent/short films because of that. Maya and 3dsMax are typically used in professional environments, and are used for the visuals in games, animations, movies, tv shows, medical videos, simulations etc.
hmm... ive been wondering about computer animations.
i have a lot of free time on my hands and i'm ok at art so i was trying to see if there are any free and good animation systems for download. know any?
Oh also, I forgot to mention that if you want to really get into animation you should learn more about classical/2D animation. All the fundamentals are the same, and the extra knowledge definitely helps. Read Richard Williams' Animator's Survival Kit for a good start.
I use 2008 now, but I hear with 2009 they've implemented a lot of new and awesome features. It sounds like their acquirement of Softimage helped to implement those changes.

Just under 3 weeks, though now it would probably take me a day or two. This video was my first time using Maya for animation (I had previously used Softimage XSI), so it's pretty rough. I've been using Maya professionally now for just over 3 years, so my work has improved a lot since I made this.
Wow, Thats really awesome. I want to be Animator (I'm 15) and I talked to a lady who was in charge for "Kun fu Panda" and she told me this was the program that created it. I got the 15day trial version for free, but I didn't know how to use it. Any tips? I've already had expeircne in wrking with other 3D programs like ZBrush (i think)
For the record, Zbrush isn't a 3D program. It's a 2D interface for working on the surfaces of 3D objects. You can technically model using Zbrush, but it's mostly used for making detail maps. Maya has a personal learning edition (PLE) that has tutorials, which will help you learn. You can also try gnomon workshop tutorials which are very helpful. Good luck :)

I'd say Max is harder to learn, because it works waay more complicated than maya.
3dsmax uses a giant list of modifiers, whereas maya just does what you want without having to search through a gazillion modifiers.
