  • I still like Nanci Griffith's version of the song.

  • Perfected? LOL.

  • I like this video. Strong end w/ the Alamo & Vietnam Memorial. LBJ is probably in an intolerably hot place as of this posting. He killed so many brave men.

  • I just want to thanks my parents for bringing me up to good songs like this.

This song brings back great memories from when I was just a boy.

  • i got one question. What does a quick picture of Orlando Bloom in this video have to do with anything else mentioned in the lyrics of this song or the other images in this video?

  • @julietaron, that's what I would say, if I had any idea what you know that I don't.

  • They definitely should put REM Cover of Richard Thompson's Wall of Death,

otherwise, it looks like they are claiming credit for the song.

I agree, RT's songs ARE perfect. He doesn't need any help from any other musician "improving" his stuff.

Tribute CD sounds interesting - I'd like to hear more of it.

REM's version of Wall of Death is really good.

  • Metaphor-laden! One of my favorite RT tunes. Thank you for posting.

  • excellent version

  • screw that, the vid is pretty good 2

  • Fantastic cover....Love it..

  • O, many, many thanks for uploading this song! Loving this song that much.. Both versions, by the way...

  • I'm a massive Fairport and Richard Thompson fan. Love the original version, but I think this REM "tribute" to R.T. is brilliant too. A good cover version in no way detracts from the qualities of the original.

  • @sentesteng Bravo. REM does great covers. Maybe the best cover band ever!

  • Nothing wrong with REM's version, but it pales in comparison to Richard's original, and Richard Thompson doesn't need ANYBODY to "perfect" his songs.

  • @onitram1 Agreed! While Richard's version makes me realize that "this is the nearest to be alive", this just reminds me of the goods times I had with Automatics for the People. I am glad that there are superstars like R.E.M covering Richard Thompson, but Richard Thompson is just better than anybody else, at least when it comes to performing his own songs. And not just good at singing or playing, but at singing **while** playing.

  • really thanks for uploading this...

I had to hear this more than 10 years :D amazing lyrics!

  • wow. great cover. love them for this.
