I hear three separate pieces going on simultaneously. Seems like the three guys are aware of each other just enough to not go completely wrong, but not much musical conversation between them. Jaco and Pat going nuts in different ways and the drummer keeping a safe distance from both of them.
@Musicenthusiasm Ignoring the fact that they exist, and just waiting a measure before playing anything harmonically relevant. Jaco always got away with this shit because people liked to think he was always playing "out," or "modern," but really he just wasn't that great of a straight-ahead jazz player. And that's alright, but people like to think that he was, and that's just not consistent with... facts. Listen closely to his famous Donna Lee solo. He skates all over it.
Playing bebop changes with exceptional vocabulary and elegance, as Metheny does here despite Jaco's ridiculous bass line, requires a very specific type of mind. Jaco was more oriented toward modal music, wherein there is not a lot of inherent change and a lot of creative space. Weather report is a format in which he shines. Some of this straight-ahead stuff with him is just so lackluster. He's not even listening to Pat if you pay attention closely.
I see what you mean. While I think Jaco's accompaniment is fine, his solo reveals that he's not as comfortable in this setting as Metheny is. I agree that Jaco thrived in modal music, where he didn't have to "abide" to lots of changes. But still, Metheny must have held Jaco in some regard as a jazz player, as he chose to play trio dates with him for four successive years....
@Musicenthusiasm i agree with you about the jaco assessment. same goes for allan holdsworth; he could never cover bebop changes the way metheny/pass/parker/trane etc could. i have the same problem. at a certain point i chose the 'modal' over the 'bebop' mindset, for a variety of reasons. and glad to see you know that one is not inherently better than the other, that is important to see...
@FiveHundo500 what about donna lee?

Jaco's playing the changes, but the bassline is a little wacky.

He's not skating. He's mostly leading the progression by 1-3 beats. You can hear him shift gears after the first pass. Beautiful.

Yo creo que el arte fue hecho no solo para disfrutarlo sino ademas para que las personas faltas de talento y capacidad de goce lo critiquen.

You can actually hear Jaco skating most of the changes if you even listen remotely closely.

Pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by "skating the changes"? I've never heard that term before.

i think jacos solo has a lot more musicality in it. i find it's soothing to listen to him after pat methenys note massacre...

What pat does to these changes can only be described as nasty. If this was a porn and those changes were a girl, it would be banned in 48 states.
