They're banking on their return to power coming from a cycle of goverment failure. Like interchanging two wrong sollutions when you see one has run it's coarse.
your completly right im a republican... i know im sorry lol but my party really is being dumb by waiting and banking on the mistakes of one person and sitting idely by waiting for the natural turn of politics to come around. the republicans need to help by suggesting solutions they deem appropriate and looking at all the angles of a bill before passing judgement on it because of who wrote it. of course this applies to both parties when you think about it.
I *really* hope the National Republican PAC has their way. Suppose they force typically reasonable conservatives who know the law (i.e., Senator Hatch of Utah) to fillibuster over the next year and a half. This will cause the Rebulican Party to completely implode the way the National Republican Party (the Whigs) imploded prior to the War Between the States.
Unfortunately, I agree with the previous commentor about how our country has acted like an Empire for the past 8 years, much as Rome did, right before the fall. Right down to the sometimes insane rulers. Like Caligula, they busied themselves emptying our Treasury, breaking the Military, treating them like crap when they come back; Also stretching them too thin. They don't even have enough WATER for God's sake. Sickening. Hopefully it will be better now under the new administration.
I think we mistake the fact that these people would come around if they would just listen to reason. They hear - they do not agree. I have yet to understand what it is they really stand for and what the threat to them is if gays marry and minorities prosper. I didnt understand them when they burnt down churches in the south and I dont understand them now. When you ask they call you names and freak - its the crazies. Gosh I feel sorry for reasonable Republicans. I'm not completely sure I would know one if I saw one anymore but lawd tigers ar showing their stripes these days
"No facts, no thinking, blanket opposition and kill their own". The problem with the Republican party is that they act like Democrats. This is exactly what's going on in the White House right now. Except for blanket opposition. Democrats don't need blanket opposition because they have the majority.
for 6 years a term and a half - this opposite was true and democrats did not commit to a blanket opposition and that has been the case since I have ben old enough to vote. You can say it isnt so but look over voting records and you will see that one of the fundamental difference in MOD of parties is this.
Pure political hackery. As the judiciary attempts to consider what the law should be, it (unfortunately) becomes a political position. The Republicans should use their authority to attempt to ensure the next justice is a skilled legal scholar who will produce rulings based on the law, not activism. If Congress passes a bad law, it's their role, not the judiciary's, to fix it.
The Supreme Court also gave us the Dred Scott decision. There is no guarantee that the individuals on the Supreme Court will be any more enlightened than Congress. The difference is that we can throw out our Congresspeople. Supreme Court justices have their positions for life. Short of impeaching our justices (which I think is unprecedented) and passing amendments, there aren't too many checks on the judiciary.
A valid point on their being not enough checks on the Judiciary. I do think there should me more, but that is not a reason not to have active judges. That is a reason for more balances. So my original point stands.
In reality: A judge who interprets the constitution loosely, interpreting it in a modern context. This led to Miranda Rights, the Right to Privacy, Abortion, Busing, and W's presidential victory among other things.
To Republicans: Anybody who's cool with abortion. Or maybe anybody Obama picks. I dunno.
Activist are those who take a relative approach to the constitution. Conservatives believe some issues are better left to the states while "activist" judges make them federal issues.
Abortion is a good example. Nobody can find written in the written constitution the right to privacy as interpreted by the justices. But it is that right that rationalizes abortion as a federal ly protected right.
The constitution has been so perverted, it has little meaning these days.
I dunno, the counting of slaves as 3/5 of a person for purposes of representation, creating a perverse incentive for the maintenance and perpetuation of slavery in the southern United States?
My point was in the fluid interpretation of written things we hold as dogmatic. As for God, believe it or not, this puny existance of ours is not all there is. And the only credible debate is the one you have with yourself if you are truly seeking spiritual truth. No man can argue you into a connection with the Divine.
If our Creator thought it important enough, he'd have sent an angel instead of religious man. Believe that, and don't waste your time in any foolish debates about God.
Gee I wonder why that is, it's only been 200+ years, how could everything be so different now? I mean, society is exactly the same way as it was back then. Why can't the same ideas be used?

Obama is obviously setting up his out so he can claim it wasn't him. Then the Republicons get maximum damage and he avoids any blame. This is so obvious.
He could have already done that as it was the courts telling him to release them. He could have just said "hey sorry guys I agree maybe we should not release these but the justice system and courts are telling me I have to and I beleive in the rule of law". Instead hes now the defender of "these photos of torture endager the United States"
This is wrong on so many levels... but wrong is what I have come to expect from the Republican party so I am not surprised. It's like watching a suicide in slow motion.
ANY REPUBLICAN (pardon the caps) who votes for a Barack nominee to the USSC they will work to defeat.
This is why the GOP will drift below 21%...they keep trying to kick ppl out who don't believe everything the extreme right wing believes & who don't work at all times as obstructionists to anything Barack proposes.
Speaking of Clinton, i'll never forget the interview he did with Fox news...he was so angry when he pointed out (and i am old enough to remember when it initially happened lol) that he tried to get bin laden when he had good intelligence on his whereabouts in afghanistan...he was vetoed and labelled a war-monger and grand stander...i'll never forget that...

The Democratic Party is a progressive social liberal party which favors government regulation of business and the expansion of civil liberties.

Please! Drive all the other moderate Republicans out of the party! They don't need to turn Democrat -- I'd be happy with Independent! Watch the Republican presence in DC shrink and shrink as they distill it down to the absolute party-line ideologues.
So a small group of losers get together, get worked up till their veins start popping, form a PAC and then send poorly worded letters to people. That's not unheard of...
Republicans baffle me with their hypocrisy. Only a few short years ago, when Bush was nominating Roberts and Alito, the Republicans were threatening to change the rules of the Senate to abolish the filibuster and go to a straight vote. Now they are threatening to filibuster all of Obama's picks. Astounding.
Actually, this is the one area where they are remarkably consistant. Remember all that "Country First" stuff from the McCain campaign? Nuh-uh. PARTY FIRST; that's what they're all about. Party first, big business second, country third, the actual people living in the country a distant fourth and anyone who doesn't support them (ie liberals and democrats) dead, dead last.
So, whatever they do will consistantly be in the best interests of themselves to the exclusion of all others. Get it?
Gods have mercy, but I am so damn glad I left the GOP back in 1996.
Those people have gone clear around the bend past conservative and well nigh unto reactionary.
Is it just me, or have events of the last few months started to take an an almost surreal quality?
It's like a political conspiracy thriller written by Oliver Stone, but directed by Federico Fellini, or maybe Lina Wertmuller, except this shit is real, or at least as real as news gets.
The GOP will ensure that the Supreme Court remains entirely CONSERVATIVE for a conservative supreme court is ALWAYS RIGHT and a slight liberal presence is ALWAYS WRONG! When Palin becomes POTUS, she will have the Supreme court be comprised entirely of CONSERVATIVE WHITE WOMEN!
LOL. That will happen. Palin is the worst thing to ever happen to republicans. She's so dumb makes GWB look smart. Please, Republicans Run Palin for President in 2012. If she loses run her again in 2016.
The Republican Party and its PACs have been thuggish for over a century because they have been generously funderwritten by organized crime families for over a century. Of course it's been that way with Dems as well, and in diverse contexts from Chile to China. Not to say it's hopeless because reform and truth really do happen sometimes. Right?
I do agree, but if Cenk ever gets his own TV show, he is going to put a big dent of damage in the Republican Party, And i'm sure 1 or two rednecks are looking for him right now coz he's making the right wing nutters look silly!!!

Republicans suck, dude! All they want is power.
Democrats rule, all they want to do is better America!

Arlen Specter, John McCain and now Orin Hatch!?
If these three men are to "liberal" for the GOP, then they have gone even further to the right that I thought.

Again republicans trying to use fear and intimidation where possible, only in this case they come off as complete morons
SaviorMachine84 2 years ago 2
I hope they succeed!!
Please! Drive all the other moderate Republicans out of the party! They don't need to turn Democrat -- I'd be happy with Independent! Watch the Republican presence in DC shrink and shrink as they distill it down to the absolute party-line ideologues.

republicans want empty spaces in the senate and the supreme court. just a fail of a party
duckmanx88 2 years ago 2
So a small group of losers get together, get worked up till their veins start popping, form a PAC and then send poorly worded letters to people. That's not unheard of...
yamuboy 2 years ago 2
I think JRs comment might be a double standard. Just out of common sense I cant imagine liberal groups not using similar tactics.

Republicans = Party First
Starved for power, and willing to screw the American people over to get it.

Hopefully SENSIBLE republicans will rise from the ashes.

I want to filibuster Ana!

Astounding.
battousai1889 2 years ago 5
Actually, this is the one area where they are remarkably consistant. Remember all that "Country First" stuff from the McCain campaign? Nuh-uh. PARTY FIRST; that's what they're all about. Party first, big business second, country third, the actual people living in the country a distant fourth and anyone who doesn't support them (ie liberals and democrats) dead, dead last.
So, whatever they do will consistantly be in the best interests of themselves to the exclusion of all others. Get it?

I'd love someone to explain what exactly an 'activist' judge is.
rickelmonoggin 2 years ago
Activist Judge: Any judge who doesn't march in lock step to the tune of the hardest of the hard right wing of the republican party's ideology.
OR
Any pro-choice judge (for short).
Capng123 2 years ago 6
Gods have mercy, but I am so damn glad I left the GOP back in 1996.
Those people have gone clear around the bend past conservative and well nigh unto reactionary.
Is it just me, or have events of the last few months started to take an an almost surreal quality?
It's like a political conspiracy thriller written by Oliver Stone, but directed by Federico Fellini, or maybe Lina Wertmuller, except this shit is real, or at least as real as news gets.
R3dp055um 2 years ago 3
Regressive more than reactionary, I'd say.
I don't think they've quite reached Fellini-esque levels of surreality though... not just yet anyway.

"When Palin becomes POTUS"
LOL. That will happen. Palin is the worst thing to ever happen to republicans. She's so dumb makes GWB look smart. Please, Republicans Run Palin for President in 2012. If she loses run her again in 2016.

Run her until Miss California is ready to take over :P

The Dems should remind the hypocritical Republicans of the "Nuclear Option". Wasn't it Hatch himself who advocated its use a few years ago?
criskity 2 years ago 2
The Republican Party and its PACs have been thuggish for over a century because they have been generously funderwritten by organized crime families for over a century. Of course it's been that way with Dems as well, and in diverse contexts from Chile to China. Not to say it's hopeless because reform and truth really do happen sometimes. Right?

Specter is a self serving bastard. He changed parties because he was low in the polls as a Republican.
