Hey Rich! I think you're probably right about that. It was probably an experiment on Bill's part (which he liked to do) that got captured in this '63 concert. I haven't seen him use it before this or afterwards on any other videos or photos.
Bill Chase actually used a Dizzy horn quite reguarly. It was actually part of the reason he didnt stay with the Kenton band longer, because the trumpets unusual shape did not look so good or balance well with the group according to Kenton. Maybe that same reason is why it does not show up on many live recordings because it does tend to distract a bit.
Frank Minear used to play a Dizzy horn like Bill Chase is doing here, I suspect for the same reason, keeping that lead trumpet bell up and out there even when reading off those low music stands.
